•f PAGE • - PLAINDEALER • FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 27. 1M1 Swim Team Awards Athletes Junior Terri Blume was named the Moat Valuable Player and freshman Peg Chilvers was named the Most Improved Player during last week's McHenry swim team awards night. Blume established two new McHenry varsity records this season- the 100 freestyle in 1:00.6 and also the 200 freestyle in 2:15.5. She also led the team in scoring this season with lllV^ dual meet points. She was also a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that established a new best time of 4:16.4. The other girls that swam on that relay team were junior Heidi Dass, sophomore Robin Loss, and freshman Monique Bentancourt. Blume also holds the school records in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, as well as swimming on the fastest 200 medley relay team. These marks were set last season. Chilvers competed in several events for coach MikeShanahan including the 50,100,200, and 500 freestyle, as well as being a part of a 400 freestyle relay team. She finished with 30 dual meet points this season to win her first major "M". Other Warrior girls that received a major "M" were f r e s h m e n M o n i q u e Bentancourt and Gail Petty, sophomores Robin Loss, Patti Freund, Danielle Johnson, and Chris Conway, juniors Heidi Dass, Lisa Thome, and Gina Jernberg, and senior Diana Gregg. Earning a minor "M" award were junior Ann Bacigalupo, sophomore Teri On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt Because of the holiday, this is written before all the week's activities took place. With a little twist of the arm of "Hutch" we are proud to announce the winners of the Cross Country team awards that were held Tuesday. As expected by many fans, the Mo6t Valuable Award went to the "TEAM". It was strictly a team effort all the way that the Warriors finished third in the State, the highest finish for a Warrior cross country team ever in the state. The Mo6t Improved Award went to sophomore Steve Carby who led the Warriors in the final meets of the season. The 100 Percent Man Award went to Wade Cepulis, one of two seniors on the squad. Until illness overtook this young lad late in the season, he was the mainstay of the Warrior team. Next week we will bring you some thoughts on the speech by Joe Newton, coach of the State Champs, York of Elmhurst. Delia Saunders was the M. V.P. on the girls team. She is also a mainstay on Don Seaton's girls track team. The Mo6t Improved Award went to Mary Bazan, another track star. Hutch has started something new for the Cross Country fans. He has instituted a Hall of Fame. His first two members are John Mclnerney, presently coach at Crystal Lake South and a three time All American at Eastern Illinois university; and Andy Oakley of Northwestern university a All-Big 10 Conference selection while running for the Wildcats. Both of these young men are former Warriors, and continued their running in universities, and have done quite well throughout their career. Ken Ludwig will take his Warriors to Sycamore tonight for a game with the defending champions Sterling Warriors fro a 7 p..m. engagement. Among teams competing are Marengo, a 'Sweet 16' member in Class A last season, Kanelana the favorite in the Little Seven this season, and DeKalb coming off a very successful football season and a pre-season co-favorite in the Up-State conference. If nothing else the Warriors will gain a lot of experience during the tourney, and if you can remember a year ago, the Warriors for the first time reached the finals. Even in the glory years, when they reached the 'Sweet 16', the Warriors were eliminated in the opening round. Don't sell the Warriors short this season, on paper they don't figure in the Fox Valley, but how many times before have we made that statement. I'm looking forward to another interesting Warrior season, and it is going to start on Friday evening at Sycamore. With the state playoffs coming off this weekend in football, there is a possibility that the private schools (Catholic) will again dominate the scene. There are five private schools in the finals and a great possibility of them winning all divisions. In Class 6A Brother Rice of Chicago could defeat Reavis of Oak Lawn. Joliet Catholic wno many consider the best team in the state plays Deerfield. This will be a 5-A game and both played at Northwestern university. In 3-A schools, Bishop McNamara (formerly St. Pat's) is a favorite over a southern school Mt. Carmel. 2-A Schlarmen of Danville a winner over Richmond is the top choice, and in 1-A Aquin of Freeport probably the highest scoring team in the state is another favorite. Craig Whitlock of Dunlap high school near Peoria, who proposed that the private schools be thrown out of the l.H.S.A. and was turned down by the principals, will probably have a heart attack if the five private schools come up winners over the weekend. Anyway, you can be assured that there will be some changes next year, what they are I don't know, but I'll get out the crystal ball one more time and pick at least four winners in the playoffs for the private schools, and if that happens the fur will fly down in Bloomington home of the l.H.S.A Hope all you fans had a happy Thanksgiving, and hope to see you next week at Cary for the Warrior opener in the Fox Valley. Starting January 1, you can take advantage of the biggest tax break in savings history. Starting January, 1982, you can set up your own retirement plan with an IRA account, and invest up to $2,000 per year--even if you already participate in a pension plan. The amount you contribute yearly will De 100 percent tax deductible, and the interest accumulated will be tax-sheltered income. There are obviously many details to consider. But the opportunities are great. Ask your Country Companies agent to explain now you can reduce your taxes and save for retirement at the same time. That's the Spirit of the Country! These two teams met in the finals last year with the state ranked Sterling crew winning by 20 points. One consolation for the McHenry crew is that the Sterling team graduated the five starters from last year's team Not much is known about the Sterling crew this season, but the Warriors can expect another stiff en counter, as the Warriors from the banks of the Rock River year in and year out have good basketball teams. - In talking with Coach Ludwig the other day, as usual he said, "We are small and inexperienced. We will have to depend upon our hustle and pressure defense to carry us through the earlier stages of the season". This is a familiar and true story for the Warriors. The veteran coach has never had what one would call a big player. It must be the McHenry water. Coach Ludwig has listed his probable starters for the opening game. Dave Smith one of two returning let- termen at 6'1" will be at one forward, along with junior 6 1" Bill Hermann. The pivot will be taken care of by 6'2- Aric Akins a 185 lb. senior. Starting at the guard positions will be senior returning letterman Mike Burgdorf at S'll", and junior Mike Bauml at 6'0". Other members of the team are as follows, seniors, John Huff a guard, Dan Long a wing man, Ben Schweder also at wing, Charles Wegener at the point, Dave Williams either point or wing, Bob Whalen at wing, and juniors Steve Babb a 6'2" center, Randy Buenzli at a wing position along with Gary Freund. Scott Grady is at the point, along with Rob Mortell. Randy Lively will play both point and wing along with Jim Wynveen. Two centers in contention for starting berths are Brad Salman a 6'3" junior and John Wegener a 6'1" junior. We hope to see a lot of you Warrior fans at the game Friday night. FIRST ROUND PAIRINGS Kaneland vs. Marengo, 1:30 p.m. DeKalb vs. Rochelle, 3:00 p.m. McHenry vs. Sterling, 7:00 p.m. Sycamore vs. Belvidere, 8:30 p.m. If the Warriors win over Sterling they will play Saturday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. If the Warriors lose they will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. McHenry swim coach Mike Shanahan (left) displays the most valuable player plaque as two of his award winning athletes look on. Terri Blume (middle) was voted the team's most valuable player after establishing two new records this Girl Cagers Shoot For .500 Season season. The junior now holds four individual varsity records. On the far right is freshman Peg Chilvers, winner of the team's most improved player award. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Cagers Open At Sycamore McHenry high school's girls basketball coach Pat Wirtz has some definite goals as he begins his second year at the helm of the varsity squad. The Warriors would like to win on the road this year, something they were unable to do all last season. They would also like to win more at home to improve upon last year's 4-16 overall record which included a 2-11 mark in the Fox Valley conference. "We're shooting for a .500 season in conference play," said Wirtz. "But to do that we'll have to win on the road." McHenry will be given its chance to do this early in its schedule as it plays nine of its first 11 games on the road. The Warriors will host their season opener, however, on Thursday, Dec. 10 when they play Lake Zurich in a 6:00 p.m. contest. Wirtz currently has 13 girls out for the varsity and returns five letterwinners from last year's team But he concedes that his team won't be one of the biggest in the conference and feels that success will depend on his team's outside shooting and in its aggressiveness Leading McHenry will be forward-center Karen Karpavicius who will be playing in her third varsity season. The junior member will be counted on heavily this season for rebounding strength and her tenacious defense. Tammy Sproull is the lone returning senior member. Wirtz considers Sproull, one of many guards, to be the team's hustler Volleyball Awards McHenry high school's volleyball team voted for its award winners last week and the following girls were honored: Most Valuable - Pam West. Captains - Pam West, Donna Chesler, and Joan Stelmack. Most Improved - Chris Iacullo. Like Karpavicius, the other returning let terwinners are also juniors. Terri Blume and Debbie Koerber return as forwards, while Robin Geiger is back in the backcourt. The trio are among the better outside shooters of the team, according to Wirtz. Only two other senior members are on the squad, neither of whom have played on McHenry's varsity before. Forward Sue Smith is a first-year player, and guard Joan Stelmack is playing her first season at McHenry after playing varsity for two years at another school. A non-lettering junior that should see plenty of playing time this year is Dawn Dobbertin, the tallest Warrior at 5'8^". "We'll really be counting on her for rebounds this year," said Wirtz. Other junior members include Kelly Brough (guard), Julie Hetterman (guard), Cissy Pinkstaff (guard-forward), and Lynne Podpora (forward-center). Greta Larsen is McHenry's lone sophomore and she will play both a guard and forward. The underclassman is one of the Warriors' most complete players and should also see considerable action this season. Coach's Corner For eight years, Pat Wirtz has served as a basketball coach at McHenry and this season will mark his second term as head girls varsity coach. He previously coached the boys freshmen team for four years, then the boys sophomore team for two years before taking over as the girls coach. O r i g i n a l l y f r o m McHenry, Wirtz attended Elgin Community College for two years where he also played basketball. He then transferred to S o u t h e r n I l l i n o i s University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in history. Wirtz has served as league director in Men's 12" softball for the last 11 Pat Wirtz years and he also begins his second year as league director for Men's Parks and Recreation basket ball.
