School Boards Reject Self Pay School board members don't receive pay for their work and a large majority don't want to. Board members from 659 Illinois school districts voted Saturday, Nov. 21, to not even consider the idea. They were meeting in Chicago during the three-day annual conference of the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). In all, Illinois school boards expressed their views on nearly 30 policy issues from taxation to physical education and drug abuse. "It wa& pretty obvious that the voting delegates con sidered school board work a form of public service," notes Harold P. Seamon, IASB executive director. "The average board member puts in 400 to 500 hours a year, but there was Almost no support for the proposal to pursue any kind of pay." In all, nearly 7,000 school board members and ad ministrators took part in the educational conference that concluded at noon Nov. 23, with an address by Adlai E. Stevenson III, Democratic nominee for governor. In addition to the Saturday morning vote on association policy positions, the con ference provided clinics on more than 40 school m a n a g e m e n t ' t o p i c s , workshops on collective b a r g a i n i n g , p o l i c y development and com munications, and dozens of other opportunities to acquire new ideas and in formation. One of the best-attended sessions was a series of four clinics for board members who were first elected earlier this month. An estimated 500 new board members took part in the special sessions on basic school board laws and procedures. In addition to rejecting the idea of a salary, voting delegates also instructed their association to develop a program "to encourage talented young people of this state to pursue teaching as a career." The resolution was introduced with the ex planation that school boards must "work to counter the unfavorable publicity being directed against teacher- s...boards have a respon sibility to recruit the best talent available to staff their educational programs." "There is a growing fear that negative publicity about schools and teacher unions is discouraging talented young people from becoming teachers," Seamon said. "Yet we know that teaching can be a satisfying and rewar ding career and school boards want to make that fact known to more people." School board delegates also gave strong approval to resolutions asking the General Assembly for the authority to: ...charge fees to help offset the high cost of behind-the- wheel driver's education; ...meet in private to set the selling price or rental fee for unneeded buildings or land. "School boards believe they cannot get the best possible price for an unused building when they have to set the minimum acceptable price in a public meeting," Seamon said. He noted that the Illinois Open Meetings act permits boards to discuss the purchase of property in closed meetings, but the sale of property must be discussed in public. Holiday Open House At Alternative School Staff and board of directors of McHenry County Alternative high school are hosting a holiday open house Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Among the guests who will tour the school at 409 N. Front street (Route 31) in McHenry will be professionals from area high school counseling depart ments and social service agencies, as well as from local law enforcement agencies and court services. The public is also invited to the open house. The McHenry County Alternative high school is a program operated by the McHenry County Alter n a t i v e E d u c a t i o n f o u n dation. It offers a small high school atmosphere for the student who works better in non-graded, low-key, family like setting, while providing the opportunity to earn a high school diploma. A jeweler was carrying a grandfather's clock to his shop to be repaired. On his way down the crowded street, he bumped into a lady, hit her with the clock, knocked her down. The lady was furious. "Why can't you be like other people," she screamed, "and just wear a wrist watch?"
