DECEMBER 2.1981 1 - "mm. * %i IT'S MINE • An unidentified Fenton basketball player wrestles the ball away from Johnsburg's Russ Beck (12) in Friday night's Tournament game. Beck was fouled on the play, but the aggressive Bisons would go on to win 67-51. Watching the play are Johnsburg's John Wharton (42) and Dan Williams (40) along with Fenton's Rian Doege (10). STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Johnsburg Blanked At Round Lake The 1981-82 Johnsburg Skyhawk basketball team is off to its worst start in the four year history of the school I r i 'he Round Lake Thanksgiving Tournament, Johnsburg lost all three of its contests and dropped its season record to 0-4 rhe tirst of the Skyhawks' three downfalls came at the hands of the host Round Lake Panthers 65-44. Johnsburg trailed Round Lake 4-2 early in the first quarter, but that was as close as the Skyhawks were to get for the remainder of the contest Don McGee taihed eight points in the first quarter as the Panthers moved out to a 17-7 lead. Round Lake then scored nine unanswered points to increase its lead to 26-7 in the second quarter Dan Pural added eight points to the Panthers' scoring attack as they rolled to a 36-16 half- time lead Jeff Bartmann and Tom Pieper tallied four points apiece as the Skyhawks outscored the Panthers 14-11 in the third quarter. But Johnsburg still trailed by 17 points 47-30, at the end of three periods. John Hendrixson, leading scorer for Johnsburg with nine points, and Bartmann, both fouled out in the fourth quarter. Round Lake capitalized on the fouls hitting eight of ten charity tosses in the fourth quarter and strolled to victory. Following Hendrixson in scoring for the Skyhawks were Bartmann with eight points and Joe Meyers and Dan Williams with seven. Pieper finished with six points. Pural led the Panthers with 18 points while McGee added 12 points and Terry Cheeks had 10. The Skyhawks were victimized by 39 turnovers in the contest, a key factor in the loss. "Against the 1-3-1 defense we had trouble moving the ball," said Johnsburg coach Ben Beck. "Our inability to get the ball inside and to move the ball resulted in a lot of turnovers." ~ Johnsburg was easily eliminated in the second round as well, losing to the Fenton Bisons 67-51. The Skyhawks trailed at one point by 33 points, but they fought their way back into the contest. "They (Fenton) showed us different defenses and that led to a lot of our break downs offensively," said Beck In the last game of the After stealing the ball at mid court, Johnsburg's Tom Pieper scores on an uncontested layup in Friday night's game against Fenton. The Skyhawks didn't get many easy ones during the Round Lake Tournament, however, as they were defeated in all three contests. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD tournament, Johnsburg had its best shot at winning, but the Wauconda Bulldogs escaped with a one point victory, 58-57. The Skyhawks played well in the early going spearheaded by baskets by Bartmann and Meyers to take an early 13-8 lead. But the Bulldogs bounced back and took the lead by scoring 10 unanswered points for a 18-13 first quarter lead. Both teams netted 16 points in the second quarter and at halftime Wauconda led 34-29. Johnsburg controlled the boards in the third quarter and moved .to Jrithin two points with 4:54 left flh the quarter. A free throw by Meyers tied the game at 37-3% and the Skyhawks moved out to a four point lead on baskets by Hendrixson and Bartmann But the Bulldogs came back with eight straight points for a 49-44 lead Johnsburg regained the lead once again in the fourth quarter on a three-point play by Meyers and another Bartmann field goal for a 57- 55 lead. With : 10 left in the contest. Bartmann misses the front end of a one-and-one. Two ticks off the clock later, Russ Edwards iced the Wauconda win with a pair of free throws. Johnsburg's last second effort, a shot by Pieper, fell short giving the Bulldogs the victory. Johnsburg shot 60 percent from the field but just 39 percent from the line. In the final quarter, the Skyhawks missed three one-and-one situations while making just one of four free throws. The Bulldogs hit six of seven free throws down the stretch. Bartmann led all scorers in the contest with 20 points, while Meyers hit for 17 points. "I was happy to get the ball inside to the big men, (Bartmann and Meyers) and they both did a better job this time." said Beck. "Take two points and we, Warriors Open Season; Fall Twice At Sycamore The ' McHenry High Warriors for the first time in history came away from the King Horn tourney in Sycamore without a v" The Warriors lost opener to Sterling 70-45 an then in the consolation round dropped a 59-44 decision to Belvidere. Playing without the ser vices of two regulars, Aric Akins and Mike Burgdorf, who were both injured last week in practice and will be on crutches for the next month, the Warriors were unable to cope with the Sterling crew on Friday night. The gang from the Rock River valley grabbed an early 14-2 lead. Then McHenry spurted with seven straight points and things began to look up for the locals. But Sterling went ahead 16-9 at the end of the initial period. In the early minutes of the second period, Sterling ran off 11 unanswered points to grab a 27-9 lead before Bill Hermann cracked the scoring for the Warriors with two charity tosses. In the middle of the period, the Warriors again came back with Steve Babb hitting a free throw, Mike Bauml a field goal. Dan Long two more charity tosses along with Hermann's two free throws to narrow the gap to 32-21 Sterling at the 2:45 .mark of the period. Sterling, however, took arge from then on and led the intermission 40 to 23. In the third period the Warriors held their own with Sterling being outscored 13 to 12 and trailed 53 to 35 at the end of the period. The final quarter saw disaster strike the Warriors as they were able to only score 10 pts. to Sterling's 17, and went down to a 70-45 defeat. The Warriors seemed disorganized in the opener, and that could be the reason for the defeat. Without the services of players Akins and Burgdorf who had practiced with the regular group almost up until game day, playing two new players with the group, one would expect some disorganization. LOSE CONSOLATION TO BELIVIDERE In the Saturday early bird consolation game at 10:30 a.m., the Warriors dropped their second game of the season The Bucs of Belvidere jumped out to a 12- 6 lead at the quarter, and things looked really bad again for the Warriors. The second period saw the Warriors hold their own as Ken Ludwig's young and inexperienced Warriors fought the veteran Bucs basket for basket and trailed 20-14 at the intermission. In the third period Mark Frailey's Bucs salted the game away with a 19 point outburst to the Warriors 10, leading 39-25 going into the final frame. The final period was a wide open as both teams began to feel free and easy and throw the ball toward the hoop, each scoring 20 points but the Belvidere five hung in there for a 59-44 victory. In the Belvidere game the Warriors were out- rebounded 32-8, and the sad fact was they did not gather in an offensive rebound. You can't win games without offensive rebounds. The sophomore Skyhawks finished the tournament tied for first place with Lake Zurich and Wauconda with a 2-1 record. In the " first contest, Johnsburg topped Round Lake 41-30 behind 14 points from Jeff Jayco and 11 from Joe Majercik. The Skyhawks dropped a narrow 39-38 game against Lake Zurich as they made good on only 10 of 25 free throws. In the final game of the tournament, Johnsburg defeated Wauconda 37-34 in overtime. Jeff Preston led the winners with 16 points. Johnsburg will begin SHARK conference play on Friday, Dec. 4 when it travels to Harvard. JoeKost Marian Wins Tournament Although Marian Central had to play its holiday meet at a different site due to a leaky roof, it didn't seem to matter much as the Hurricanes won the tournament title at Burlington Central Friday night by defeating Richmond-Burton in the finale 53-49. Marian had a 16-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 36-19 at halftime. But the Rockets rallied in the third period cutting the Hurricanes led to 48-47 with two minutes remaining in the game. But Mark Thompson then hit three free throws and Scott Truckenbrod added two more to put the game out of reach. Truckenbrod led all scorers with 22 points, while teammate Chuck Hartlieb added 12. Paul Horak and Mike White led the Rockets as each netted 10 points in a losing cause. "Overall we were pretty pleased with our first three games," said Marian coach Hans Rokus. He cited the Hurricanes good defensive play, but pointed out that his team had a nearly fatal letdown against the Rockets. Wednesday night, Marian led throughout the entire contest and went on to defeat Burlington Central 54-45, Truckenbrod again led all scorers with 21 points, while teammate Scott Spengel contributed 10. In Marian's first game of the season Tuesday night, Truckenbrod again was the leading scorer as he finished with 25 points in the 83-45 rout of Alden-Hebron. Hartlieb added 16 points, and Mike Sabatka and Dave Rickert each finished with nine for the Hurricanes. Marian, now 3-0, for the year, will begin SHARK conference action on Friday, Dec. 4 when it travels to Hononegah. Marian Girls Marian Girls Start Marian Central's girls basketball team will begin its 1981-82 season on Thur sday, Dec. 3 when it hosts non-conference opponent Grant in a 6:00 p.m. contest. The Hurricanes, coached by Bud Grover and Mary Stoner, have lost six seniors and a lot of height from last year's squad, and will rely on overall team speed and quickness this season. Marian has only fiv% upprclassmen on the squad at this time. Seniors include Jackie Weber (5'4"), Maggie Monson (5'2"), and Debbie Liggett (5'7"); while junior members are Sarah Traver < 5'7") and Holly Ryan (5'7"). Among the sophomores that will be playing varsity this year are Nancy Walsh (5'5"), Beth Lango (the tallest at 6'1"), and Beth Penza (5'8"). Thu., Dec. 3 Sat., Dec. 5 Tue., Dec. 8 Sat.
