(By Erin Hynes. Ex t e n s i o n A d v i s e r , Agriculture, McHenry County). Remember how dreary last February was? Remember how you con templated dyeing your hair orange or running off with the mail carrier just to liven up your life? By forcing spring flowering bulbs to bloom indoors, your winter existence will have all the color and excitement it needs to see you through to spring Start your adventure now by selecting large, blemish- free, high quality bulbs Crocuses, early tulips, narcissi, and hyacinths flower beautifully indoors Varieties particularly well suited for forcing are usually thus indicated in the store's display. Choose clay or plastic containers with good drainage. Shallow bulb pots are available and require less soil than standard pots, but either will work. Cover the bottom of the pot with an inch of pea gravel or broken chips from clay pots. Add enough potting soil, sand, peat, or vermiculite so that the pointy end of the bulb is just above the rim when the broad bulb base rests on the growing medium. Plant tulip bulbs with the flat side facing the side of the pot. Individual pots should contain the same color of the same variety. You'll get the best effect if the bulbs are almost touching each other Fill the rest of the pot with whatever soilish stuff you're using, leaving just the bulb Mps exposed Water thoroughly and place the pots in a cool (40 degrees F.), dark place. Refrigerators work well, as do cold frames or trenches in the ground If you use a cold frame or trench, line the bottom with gravel or perlite. set in the pots, and cover with peat, leaves, or perlite. Cover trenches with a tarp once the ground freezes. For the next 12 weeks or so, amuseiyourself somehow while the bulbs develop roots and shoots. When the shoots are 3-4" high, move the pots into a bright room with in direct light, preferably one kept at about 60 degrees F. Keep the soil moist. Flowers will form in a few weeks and your life will have new meaning. By staggering the times you bring the bulbs into light, you can have flowers indoors from February to April. Flowers last longest at 60 degrees with indirect bright light After the flowers die, save hardy bulbs to plant outdoors in the fall. Scrap tender bulbs, such as paper white nar cissus. Don't bother trying to force the same bulb twice, unless you're fond of failure. Your Week Ahead Horoscope Forecast Period: 12/6 -12/12/1981 ARIES Travel possibi l i t ies are in the picture .
