Psychiatrist At Head Start On Wednesday, Dec. 9, Dr. M i c h a e l S h a p i r o , psychiatrist^ will come to the McHenry Head Start center, 3717 W. Main street, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The parents of the McHenry County Head Start program voted unanimously at their monthly parent meeting in October to have Dr. Shapiro come back this year and give his presentation on "Holiday Depression". Unfortunately, Christmas is not always a festive and happy occasion for some. Financial stress, which makes providing a nice Christmas for the children difficult, is one common problem. Loneliness, being a single or divorced parent or just alone, can create depression. Dr. Shapiro's presentation will be geared toward these factors that can cause depression. He is going to allow time for a question and answer session. Dr. Shapiro is presently in private psychiatric practice in Elgin and is on staff at St. Joseph's hospital in Elgin. Since completion of his training, he has served in numerous capacities such as chief of psychiatry, Fort Benjamin Harrison; and director of in-patient ser vice, Loyola Medical center, May wood. He also teaches and supervises senior resident students at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine on his day off. The presentation will be open to the public free of charge. Lunch will be served immediately following the presentation. The community has been so generous in helping support Head Start that the organization would like to extend this invitation to the community members. Anyone with questions should call Jo Ann Koth, social service worker, at 338- 8790, Head Start's main office. REMEMBERING WHEN - A few old timers may remember this beautiful setting at Pistakee Bay. Williams' One-Act Plays Free To Public The McHenry County college theatre practice class, will present studio productions of Tennessee Williams' one-acts, This Property is Condemned and The Unsatisfactory Supper, Tuesday, Dec: 8, and Wednesday, Dec. 9. Written in the 1940's, both one-acts are set in rural Mississippi and are parables about the loneliness and isolation of idealistic dreamers when they face the harsh realities of human cruelty and modern living. Best known for his plays, The Glass Menagerie and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, the playwright Tennessee Williams develops his traditional themes of love, dreams and the spirit in the short plays. The production crew for the plays includes students who are enrolled in a special McHenry County college class called Theatre Practice. These students have designed and organized the presentation. The presentations, scheduled for 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on both days, will be mounted in the student lounge. Admission is free to students and the community. CHAPEL HILL ROAD McHENRY 385-0333 r YOU AND YOUR PET Why Cats Hunt If you've had an outdoor cat, you've probably seen the pet stalking insects, birds, or small animals. And you may have wondered why the cat bothered with the chase. It already had plenty of food, and lots of toys. The reasons why modern domestic cats continue to hunt have intrigued behavioral scientists for several decades. Several technical papers and at least one reference book, Cat Behavior: The Predatory and Social Behavior of Domestic and Wild Cats, have analyzed this and other aspects of feline behavior. The book's author, Paul Leyhausen, points out that the cat's hunting instinct probably was developed before its association with man began. Creeping along the ground, and keeping a low profile is an effective By Robert I Stear D V M Manager of Veterinary Services Norden Laboratories way of reaching a small ground animal. The cat tracks the animal until it strays a reasonable distance from a hole, and then pounces on it. If a cat corners a rat or mouse, it generally waits for the prey to turn and run before attacking. This gives the cat the opportunity to gr£b the back of the rodent's nefck for a quick kill. On ine other hand, an aggressive mouse or rat is often suc cessful in escaping by for cing the cat to jump back in self-defense. Although some cats are exceptionally successful in downing birds, the average cat stalks many more birds than it actually catches. A ..bird's erratic movements and unpredictable short flights make it difficult for a cat to plan a mehtod of at tack. Cats are most likely to chase and catch birds in areas where the rodent population is low. And even then, the cats will spend time chasing insects as well. Studies run by state fish and game departments indicate that cats use birds for only a small portion of their diet. You may wonder why a cat spends time chasing a small animal, and then leaves it uneaten by your doorstep or on the kitchen floor. Research hasn't provided a firm answer. One theory is that the cat wants to store the food for later, when it may be hungry. Another idea is that the cat's predatory instinct is aroused by the sight of a rodent, and the full sequence of its catching and killing cycle has to take place, even if the cat isn't hungry. Three things for which thanks are due; an in vitation, a gift, and a warning. -Welsh Proverb. Editor's Quote Book Never underestimate the power of patient persistence.
