HEAD LICE William L. Kempiners, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said that outbreaks of head lice (pediculosis), especially among school- aged children, frequently occur this time of year. "There is a lot of misin formation about head lice," Kempiners said. "Lice in festation is not an indication of poor personal hygiene Or a dirty home environment. Head lice are communicable and can infest anyone, anywhere. So, when head lice are known to be oc curring in the community, children of all ages should be c h e c k e d p e r i o d i c a l l y because it is possible for a person to have head lice and not experience the itching that afflicts most people." In examining a child's head, it is important to remember that the female head louse attaches her eggs on the hair shaft near the scalp. A child's head should be checked at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. These are the places where lice usually settle down. Eggs or nits found on the hair shaft at a distance greater than one-fourth to one-half inch from the scalp are dead and only represent past infection. Adult head lice are hard to see, but small, oval silvery eggs attached to individual hairs can be detected on close examination. Swollen lymph glands in the neck or under arms may occur in those persons who develop bacterial infection secon dary to the head louse in festation. Kempiners said that, when cases of head lice occur, medicated shampoos can be prescribed by physicians or purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies. "The shampoo is easy to use, but the directions should be followed carefully," he said. He emphasized that, to be effective, two treatments with the shampoo are essential. The second treatment should be given seven to 10 days after the first one. To avoid a reinfestation of head lice, all articles that might harbor lice or nits should be thoroughly cleaned. Clothing, towels and bed linens should be dry cleaned or washed in hot water, dried using a "hot" setting on the clothes dryer, and ironed with a hot iron. Combe, brushes, and similar items should be disinfected with the special medicated shampoo. If one person in a family, camp or school has head lice, the probability of other family members being in fested is high. Kempiners said that a large increase in the number of head lice infestations has occurred throughout the nation over the past several years.
