Devotional Reading: Romans 12: 1-13. Knowing of my interest and involvement in the ministry of spiritual healing, the newspaper reporter said, "Are you a char ismatic?" My first impulse was to reply in the negative. I realized that he assumed that only members of the "charismatic movement" are interested in the healing min istry of the church--a wrong but understandable assumption. But I decided the time had come for someone to try to put the controversy over the "gifts of the Spirit" in a different per spective. Except by the Holy Spirit "The answer to your question is both 'yes' and 'no'," 1 re plied. "I am charismatic and, if you're a Christian so are you, but that doesn't mean that we are necessarily part of what is known today as the charismat ic movement." 1 went on to say that, while I have no quarrel with that movement, I have not been attracted to become part of it. My quarrel, I said, is with those who use the issue of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to divide and antagonize Christians. The Holy Spirit is not the special or unique possession of one partic ular group of Christians, nor are the gifts of the Spirit limited to people following one Chr is t ian lifestyle. All of us have tue Holy Spirit within us and all of us are granted gifts by the Spirit, although we may not be aware of them or make use of them. Today, however, it is cus tomary for some Christians to insist that they alone "possess" the Holy Spirit and are endowed with the gifts of the Spirit. Even more arrogantly, some of these further hold that when the rest of us preach, teach or heal in Christ's name, we are endowed not by the Holy Spirit, but the devil. Remember that the same charge was made against Jesus (Matthew 12: 24). But the Same Spirit Thus in I Corinthians 12, 13 and 14, Paul deals with the same problem. Some people in Corinth are claiming thai they alone have the gifts of God's Spirit while others are empow ered by the power of Satan Paul says it plainly: "I want you to understand that no one speak ing by the Spirit of God ever says 'Jesus be cursed!' and no one can say 'Jesus is Lord' ex cept by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord" (1 Cor. 13: 3,4). Paul goes on to say that the gifts of the Spirit without love-- love that is not jealous or boast ful, love that does not insist on its own way -- are worthless. Thus, if we have the Holy Spirit in us, we will be humble, not proud, loving of others, not contentious, and willing to ack nowledge that all of God's chil dren are gifted with the charis ma of the one Spirit. Com bines in the Palouse Hills of Washington roll through a wheat field. Good weather has made record grain crops throughout the U.S. GARDEN Peperomia Decorative, Easy to Grow Indoors The peperomia plant is widely used indoors because it is both decorative and easy to grow. Native to Central and tropical South America, the plant is a member of the Piperaceae fam ily and takes its name from the Greek word for "pepper like." The flowers, however, look more like white mice tails at tached to long spikes, against a background of dark green, heart-shaped leaves. The leaf stalks are pale pink. Flowering takes place from late spring to early winter. Soil requirements include two parts loam to one part each of peat, leaf-mould and sand. Propagation is accomplished by inserting stalks of leaf cuttings into compost. Constant 60 de gree F. temperature is recom mended, with placement in lo cation that is well-lit but away from direct sunlight. The small root systems of the peperomia plant do not require heavy watering and excessive watering may result in plant rot. It is best to allow the compost to become completely dry between waterings, although leaves should be misted during periods of hot weather. AH, WINTER! The skier to the slopes, the hunter to the hill, the bear in his cave and the gardener, warm by the fire side, deeply lost somewhere in the pages of next season's seed catalog.
