Real Estate Facts | (By Yvonne Beer, Executive Officer, McHenry County Board of Realtors). - T h e p r o s p e c t i v e homebuyer needs to fully .research the neighborhood before deciding on which home to buy. While property taxes, zoning and building regulations and neigh borhood stability are key considerations, community services, schools, travel time and neighbors are important as well. You should find out what community services are available in the area and how well they are provided. Street maintenance, water and sewage system, police and fire departments, public transportation, shopping outlets, and garbage collection, are all important. Check with city officials, members of the local planning commission and neighbors for details. < Inquire also* about medical 3facilities, especially emergency help; If you have i children, inquire about day care centers, nearby parks, or playgrounds and recreational facilities for older children. Good schools frequently reflect the quality of a neigh borhood, so do some fir sthand research. Note the quality and extent of the physical facilities of the schools, the variety in the curriculum, faculty qualifications and quality of extracurricular activities. Ask teachers and school officials for information regarding the educational quality of local schools. Observe classes in progress and, if possible, attend a Parent-Teacher association meeting. How convenient is the neighbhood in terms of getting around or travel time? Ask yourself if shopping, schools, and medical care are all within reach. Commuting time and ease to work should also be carefully considered. Ask about bus or train schedules and public transportation routes. Will your family need a second car? Will your insurance premiums be affected if you have to travel long distances to and from work? Check at different times during the week for traffic congestion and safety. Researching an area and asking questions before you buy will help you get acquainted with a neigh borhood before you decide to call it home. Be Sure Check your homeowners in surance policy to be sure your wood stove is covered. GENERAL FOREMAN The appointment of Craig Janusz as general foreman has been announced by Intermatic, Inc., Spring Grove. Janusz will have overall responsibility for the final assembly of the company's automatic timers, heaters and outdoor lighting. Delay Delay in the construction of synthetic fuel plants in the Unit ed States is creating a crisis situ ation, says an energy expert. Each day construction is delayed adds a half-million dollars to the cost of facilities. Doctor-Well, if I were you I wouldn't start reading any continued stories. ; i by Mary Richards For many of us, Christmas gift shopping really gets serious right after Thanksgiving. Today's column is about the biggest hazard in buying Christmas gifts - selecting safe toys for children. Although there are fewer and fewer hazardous toys on the market each year, the largest number of consumer complaints to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety commission are about hazardous toys. So it is up to the buyer to use some judgment when choosing toys. We often buy toys that appeal to us rather than ones that are appropriate for the child. An electrical toy that might be safe for one eight- year-old child might be a hazardous toy in the hands of another. Most toys are labeled to indicate the age group for which the toy was designed ~ that is, "For four to seven years" or "For eight to 12 years." The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends that you use this information as a guide, but remember that that particular toy may not be suitable for all children in that age bracket. Keep in mind the particular child you're buying it for. Also ask yourself if there are younger children in the family who shouldn't play with this toy. Try to think about how much adult supervision may be required. There are guidelines to help you choose the ideal toy for a very young child. Any toy for an infant or toddler should have smooth, round edges; no exposed pins, wires or nails; no detachable parts that could be swallowed or stuck in an ear or nostril; and no darts, arrows or missiles with sharp points. Ideal toys for small children should not be made of glass or brittle plastic. Stuffed animals, a perennially favorite toy, should not have sharp wires in the ears, tails or body that can poke through the material and injure a child. And they should not have a nose, mouth, eyes or buttons that can be pulled off and put in the child's mouth - because that's where an infant will put them! Always inspect these items carefully before giving them to a small child to play with. Electrical toys, such as toy ovens and trains, should never be given to a child under eight. They can come in contact with water and short out, and they sometimes overheat. There are also some hobby sup plies, such as kilns or wood- burning kits, which reach very high temperatures, and should not be used by children under 12. No matter how cute or clever you think a toy is, before you buy it, ask yourself two questions: "Is the tov appropriate to the child's age?" "Is it a well- designed, safe toy?" If you have further questions about safe toys, contact the Illinois Depart ment of Public Health, Division of Engineering and Sanitation, 535 West Jef ferson Street, Springfield, III., 62761. A Task Unfinished "Aw, gee, pop. Do we really have to move next week?" "Well, everything's ar ranged son. Why?" "Well, there's a new kid on this block and I haven't licked him yet." rv i v ivr vrp vi Prom Time Cord To W-2, Including All Government Forms!
