Some may even say that releasing vault material so soon after Marley's death by cancer at age 36 is exploitative, tantamount to a rip-off. Others would say that the more Wailers material around, the better. I don't take sides, I just say: Gee, this sounds good. U2 October (Island) These Irish youngsters are improving with age. A year of touring the world has honed them, taught them the value of a melody and a crisp attack. Their sound is still hypnotic, but depends less on monotone and repetition. This progress leads one to believe that U2's best is still ahead of them. Ringo Starr Ringo Starr Stop and Smell the Roses (Boardwalk) 1: Why did they name this album Stop and Smell the Roses when the title song is actually called "Stop and Take Time to Smell the Roses," and the former is another song entirely? 2. How could anyone assemble an en tourage of heavy-hitters the likes of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Harry Nils- son, Ron Wood and Stephen Stills and make such a light weight album? 3: Isn't it illegal to impersonate a police officer? Coming "Nelson" and Waylon Jennings will team up for a duet LP; so will Johnny Otis and son Shuggie. Roger Daltrey, meanwhile, is record ing another solo. "A Hard DRys Night," the Beatles' first movie, is-being remixed in Dolby noise reduction and will be released again, probably this spring. And expect paperback biographies shortly of Jerry Lee Lewis, Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan. Next Week: Rock On will publish the results of your survey responses. Who did you pick for the Best Artist, or Best Group? What was the Best Album, and Best Single? Stay tuned. '«! Techo-dud? I hear that these new videodiscs have a defec tive rate of 25 percent and more. And we thought flawed record albums were getting out of hand! Bad News: Looks like the price of 45's is going up again (RCA has raised theirs to $1.98 retail). Just when they were beginning to sell, too. Weird New»: Rock and roll outsells any other genre of music by 3-to-l But it is only the third most popular content for radio programming. "Adult contemporary" is first, with "beautiful music" at second. Country is nipping at rock's heels at fourth. (Of coutse, "adult contemporary" is what you call "soft rock," so there's a certain grey area here.)
