My husband and I have just moved my widowed father's trailer within 25 feet of our back door. He s 81 years old and because I have no children and my husband teaches all day my dad expects me to be over visiting him all day. Naturally I have my home to care for, plus I don't want him to quit doing for himself any sooner than necessary. Also I am not used to being questioned on my every move. Sometimes his remarks are rather sharp. I'm finding these kind of things hard to handle. And I'm never sure if I'm doing the right thing at the right time for him. Any advice? A. Your first responsibility is to be a good wife and take care of your own home. Sometimes as people get older they revert to childish attitudes. Don't let a sense of guilt as a loving daughter nullify your'good sense. So disregard your father's excessive demands ana criticisms; go about your business in a normal manner. He will adjust to this sensible treatment in due course. A preliminary report from the Illinois State Board of Education shows that all Illinois' 1,011 public school districts have reported at least 90 percent compliance with student immunization and health examination requirements for 1981-82. Illinois law requires that all school children be protected against polio, diphtheria, tetanus, per tussis (whooping cough), measles and rubella unless they have a medical or religious exemption.^ Protection may be either by S vaccination or form having had the disease. The law also stipulates that students who are en tering schools for the first time, or who are beginning fifth or ninth grades, must have physical examinations. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, 90 percent of the children in Illinois need to be immunized against the six diseases in order to prevent epidemics. State Supt. of Education Donald G. Gill said the districts have done a remarkable job of fully implementing immunization and health examination requirements that are so important to the well-being of the children. "The performances of the local districts, with the cooperation of parents and health professionals, have been outstanding," Gill said. "The efforts of those persons involved go a long way toward ensuring a healthy school year for kids." School districts must report to the state board their compliance levels Oct. 15 of each year. The law requires that 10 percent of each state aid payment be withheld from public school districts reporting less than 90 percent compliance with the immunization and health examination requirements. The 1981 school year is the first time districts are required to achieve 90 percent compliance. In the 1980-81 school year, districts were required to have 80 percent compliance or have a portion of their state aid withheld. Last year, 93 percent of the districts had compliance levels of 90 percent or higher. Non-public schools also report immunization in formation to the state board, and about 80 percent, or 1,200, of the non-public schools have submitted their data. However, compliance levels have not yet been computed for the non-public schools. The data collected from the schools each fall are shared with the Illinois Department of Public Health so staff members can pin point regions, counties, and schools where resources can best be used to prevent disease outbreaks. As an indication of the effectiveness of im munization programs, Gill cited the following statistics: "In 1979, there were 1,650 cases of measles reported in Illinois, but that figure dropped to 350 cases by 1980. During the 1977-78 school year, only 53 percent of our kindergarten children were fully protected against polio. That level of protection is now over 90 percent."
