McHenry is now 1-5 overall and 1-2 in tconference play. Utilizing their height advantage, the Streaks made good use of the fast break in the first half when they shot a whopping 68 percent from the floor. Senior guard Bill Firnbach benefitted from the break and scored 10 of his team- leading 12 points in the first quarter. On the other hand, the smaller Warriors were in timidated by the Streaks' pressing zone defense and shot a meager 6-for 24 (25 percent) from the floor. Woodstock led at half time 28-12 and was never headed. Mike BaumU McHenry's leading scorer for most of the season, opened the scoring at the7:15 marie. But then Woodstock began to dominate the game. The Streaks ran, off 10 unanswered points coming off the fast break, before Bill Herrmann canned one from the corner. Steve Babb's two other baskets in the Quarter were all the Warriors would get as the Streaks lead after the opening period 20-8. The second quarter was anything but fundamental basketball as turnovers and poor shooting hampered both squads. Woodstock still, h o w e v e r , o u t s c o r e d McHenry in that period 8-4. "We were very dissapointed in our shot selection, especially in the second quarter," said Plaindealer Ludwig. "They were giving us the inside, but we didn't take advantage of it. Besides, when you shoot 6- for-24 you're not going to beat anybody." "We were trying to force them to shoot from the perimeter," said Woodstock coach Jack Renkens. "They (McHenry) were a little hesitant about their shooting because of the full court pressure we put on them." McHenry changed to a man-to-man defense in the second half, but Woodstock regained its first quarter form outscoring McHenry 19-7 for a 47-19 lead. With the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, both Ludwig and Renkens cleared their respective benches. Each team scored 16 points in the final eight minutes, but the issue was well at hand as Woodstock won 63- 35. Six-foot-six center Jerry DeWayne joined Firnbach scoring 12 points each for the winners, while Jamie Eriksen and Todd Burns finished with 10 and eight points, respectively. Herrmann took scoring honors for McHenry with 12 points and Babb followed with 10. "I thought Herrmann and Babb played aggressive tonight," praised Ludwig. "But you can see where their experience payed off. "We just don't have the experience yet," he con tinued. "Our plan was to slow them down with a zone press and cover up the middle, but were una We to do it most of the time." The Warriors will resume action on Friday, Dec. 18 when they host Crystal Lake Central in a 8:00 p.m. contest. « 'j' "We'll have to pick up some experience along the way for us to be a better ballclub," concluded Lud wig. The victory was the Hurricane'? sixth in seven starts, while the Redskins dropped to 1-7 on the season. In other games involving SHARK Conference schools, Wilmot (Wis.) edged Har vard 85-83 in overtime while Hononegah topped Beloit (Wis.) Catholic 53-50. Marian's defense, which has played well throughout the season, came through again, holding Huntley to only 12 points in each of the Girls Lose A fourth quarter rally by Marian Central fell short and Richmond-BUrton went on to claim a 50-43 girls basketball victory Saturday. The loss dropped the Hurricanes record to 1-3 on the season. Marian quickly took a 2-0 lead and was up 8-6 midway through the first period. But that was the last time the 'Canes led and Richmond scored nine straight points to claim a 15-8 lead after one quarter. The Rockets expanded their advantage to 26-15 by halftime and held a 38-28 lead at the end of the third period. But in the fourth period, Marian quickly closed the gap to 38-34 on a pair of field goals and free throws by Holly Ryan. But that's as close as Marian got as the Rockets steadily pulled away late in the game. Nancy Walsh scored 14 points to lead. the Hurricanes, while Ryan contributed 12. Tiffini King and Caroline White each had 15 points for Richmond- Burton, while Julie Moore scored 14. first three quarters. "I thought we played better defense in the Har vard game, where we held them to only 19 points in the first half," said Marian assistant coach Tom Blenner. "But we had our spurts and basically worked hard out there." Huntley moved to within a point of the Hurricanes with just two minutes left in the first period, but two baskets by Marian guard Ed Ken nedy and another by Mark Thompson put the Hurricanes up by seven points. The 'Canes closed out the first quarter with a 19-12 lead. Two quick Redskin baskets at the opening of the second quarter pulled Huntley back to within three points at 19-16, but the Hurricane defense then clamped down and held the 'Skins to only four more buckets through the rest of the half. After shutting down the Huntley offense, Marian went to work and pulled ahead 34-24 by halftime. The Hurricanes, led by Sabatka's 15 second-half points, came out roaring in the third quarter, jumping out to a 48-26 lead when the Marian guard connected with 4:53 leflL in the period. Marians offenSe then slowed down somewhat and Huntley narrowed the gap to 12 points early in the fourth quarter. But the Hurricanes put their offense back in gear held a 17-point lead through most of the remaining minutes. Huntley's Dale Erath led all scorers with 22 points, while forward Paul Eisenmenger collected 14. Kennedy was Marian's third leading scorer with 10 points.
