Grapplers Lose At Jacobs f Parks & Recreation | PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18,1961 McHenry high school's wrestling team dropped below the .500 level for the first time this year as Jacobs edged the Warriors 35-23 last Friday at Jacobs. , McHenry is now l-l in the Fox Valley conference and stands 3-4 overall. a , One Of the bright spots for .McHenry was senior Scott Schmitt in the 138 class. Sch midt won a narrow 3-2 .decision to keep his record unblemished at 7-0. - In the 105 class, Steve Carby suffered his first loss of the season as he was decisioned 8-5. The sophomore now has a 6-1 record. After wrestling Crystal to try and match up with the more taller Eagles. The occasion marked the ninth time that Coach Ken Slimko has brought a team to Buckner gym, and for the ninth time he want home a loser. Victories may be few and far between this season, but when we look back on the Jacobs game, the game ball should go to Ken Ludwig. Joe Schmitt and Mac McCracken joined us in press row - 4ast Friday night. Between these two fine gentlemen they spent over eighty years following Warrior athletics. The stories these two can tell of former Warrior days would fill volumes of books. I can remember while coaching when I told Joe, we are going to Barrington for our game, and presto we were there. I thought I knew all the ways to Barrington. A good thing that they didn't have "radar guns" for school buses in those days. Lake Central on Thursday, the Warriors will compete in the Harvard Tournament which will begin on Friday, Dec. 18 and conclude on Saturday. By weight class, here are the individual performances against Jacobs: 98 lbs. Erich Gaza was pinned by Quinn at 4:37. The sophomore stands 2-3 overall. 105 lbs. Steve Carby was decisioned by Horsch 8-5. Carby, now 6-1, is yet a co- leader in pins with four. 112 lbs. Rick Connor was pinned On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt vig i it over Jacobs 53-52. This is one vie The Warriors of Ken Ludwig won a cliff-hanger last lis is one victory j up for the veteran coach. It was a simple case of Friday night chalk up for you can superior coaching that enabled the Warriors to emerge the victors in the contest. True, it took the players to put the ball in the basket, but the man on the bench did a lot more than sitand watch the game. The Warriors opened up with a zone defense, and the Golden Eagles shot an amazing 75 percent in the first half. With their superior height advantage, one would look for the Eagles to place their big men inside near the basket. They chose to continue to shoot from the outside, however, while the Warriors stuck to their zone defense. Not changing his defense, the veteran Warrior coach as They have promised to come back, and if we can get S.I.H. away from the table on Friday nights we would really have a select group watching the game. Speaking of "Radar", we would like to welcome the new v assistant coach of the Warriors, Terry Reilly. Terry is teaching at Parkland Junior high, and has taken over from another veteran El Partenheimer. At times last Friday, one would think that the old "Radar" would jump off the bench and pop a long one in for the Warriors. He gave us Warrior fans many a thrill, and we wish him the very best of luck in the field of coaching. Pat Wirtz's girls ran tino a red hot Lake Zurich team last week and dropped their opener. First game mistakes a big part in the "Lady Warriors" defeat. The ke Zurich team had already played three games, and / had ironed out some of the early season mistakes, which are evident to any team whether it be boys or girls. With some returning letttermen, there will be vast improvement during the season. Marty Sobczak's "Rassling Warriors" ran into a good Jacobs team and went down to defeat last Friday. The Jacobs squad is undefeated this season, and one of the favorites to capture the Fox Valley title this season. The basketball team will open holiday play at Wheeling, playing Rolling Meadows at the unbelievable hour of 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 26. Maybe it is time for Warrior officials to start thinking about hosting their own holiday tourney. We have the facilities,' and as hosts v could schedule the locals for a lot better time than 9:30 p.m. The Warriors will entertain the Tigers from Central tonight. The Tigers are 0-2 this season in the Fox Valley. The Warriors will have their work cut out for them. Speaking of the Tigers we take you back to the 1964-65 season when the locals really beat the Tigers 84-53. Rich Smith led the local attack with 18 points that night in the East campus gym. Not one McHenry wrestler placed lowed than fourth place. Championships were earned by Carby (105), Connor (112), and Sarabia (126), while second place awards went to Hunt (138) and Johnson (heavyweight). More than 400 competitors and over 700 spectators converged on West Campus on Sunday, Dec. 6 as 17 teams from throughout the state competed in the Second Annual McHenry County Tumble-Weeds, U.S.T.A. open Tumbling Meet. The outstanding success of this event has placed McHenry and the Tumble- Weeds in a premier position on the L.S.T.A. circuit with teams from the northern area, Kenosha, Wis. and Marengo, to the South and Central area of Taylorville and Peru, the Metro area od Cicero and Evanston, and the other major teams in between sending full squads to this event. Few other sporting events can match these figures for a single event. Matching the success of the meet was the success of head coach Duane Sperry's host Tumble-Weed team. With only seven members and no place to call home, coach Spery organized the team three and one half years ago and has since seen it grow to 65 members. The Tumble-Weeds now threaten the supremacy of the older e s t a b l i s h e d t e a m s throughout the Midwest. In Sunday's competition, the Tumble-Weeds captured five team trophies and 35 individual ribbons.
