Ladies who belonged to the auxiliary think it is a good idea, as there's not much out here in the way of recreation for ladies. There are many talented women in the village and teaching crafts, bunco and bazaars are just a few of the items mentioned so far. If you are interested, after the first of the year, give this correspondent a call. With everyone busy with the holidays and all, it is felt that it is best to wait until after the first of the year to go ahead with any plans. So, jot down the number and I hope to hear from many of you right after the holidays. CHRISTENING On Sunday, Dec. 13, William Edward Sandell was christened at St. John the Baptist Catholic church in Johnsburg and Father Bartel officiated at the Mass. William is the son of Linda and William Sandell of 1511 Grandview. He was born Oct. 26, 1981, at Memorial hospital for McHenry county, Wood stock. He has a sister Jackie who will be three Dec. 20. Godparents are Anthony and Mary Balsis of Chicago. The proud grandparents are Evelyn and William Sandell of McHenry and Ann Kaminski. Congratulations to Linda and Bill on their new son. VILLAGE OF SUNNYSIDE Tuesday, Dec. 15 marked a red letter day for the village as the first regular meeting was held in the newly completed hall. There are some rough edges that need finishing, but the hall is done and the plaque made by Mike Cajthamel is hung prominently on the wall for all to see as they enter the building. The Hall is located on Channel Beach drive, a half block off Wilmot road. Discussions for future plans for the building were part of the agenda. With all the holiday plans and uncertainty of the weather at this time of year, it is felt best to hold the dedication in the spring. The police commission reviewed applications that came in for part-time police officers to replace the four officers who resigned. In cidentally, ex-officer Burt Nordwind graduated from law school Dec. 9 and is now a full-fledged attorney. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the village will be Jan. 5, in the new hall, at 8 p.m. President Mitchell is very proud of the new hall as he was one who worked especially hard on the snowmobile rally that was the start of the Building fund. In fact, he came down with pneumonia after the rally, from all the hours working out in the cold setting up for the rally. Bill is one of the 112 people who worked to make that day a success and all are honored on the plaque. BIRTHDAYS This week's birthday greetings go to Lou Kusrath who was 81 years young Dec. 19; Jackie Sandell celebrated Dec. 20; Conrad Jeffers, Dec. 21. Kimberly DiCianni will celebrate Dec. 24; Rich Messer, Dec. 26; Johanna Heim, Dec. 29; and Tommy Johnson, Dec. 30. Best wishes to you all for a happy day and many more to come. I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season. And a happy feeling because a gentleman from McHenry called and said he reads my column all the time. And also inquired about the location of the new village hall. VANDALISM IN THE ESTATES Reports of vandalism in Sunnyside are coming to my office - mail boxes knocked down, plastic storms slashed. Parents, are you aware of where your children are in the evening? Neighbors who have been vandalized are quite upset. Christmas is a time for decorating the tree, crackling fires, toys wrapped up in brightly colored packages, gaily colored strings of lights and families gathered together to celebrate the season. Christmas also is a time for fires, many of which will be traced back to Christmas trees and decorations, and many of which can be avoided. "In the hustle and bustle of the season, it's easy to forget common sense safety rules,'! warns Robert Seelbach,* Underwriters Laboratories vice-president and chief electrical engineer. Underwriters Labor atories Inc. (UL) is an independent, not-for-profit organization testing for public safety. Among other products, UL tests indoor and outdoor Christmas tree lights, artificial trees and electrical decorations for a variety of safety features. "Many fires are caused by damaged light strings, overloaded circuits and improper use of decorations. At UL, we try to make these products as safe as possible, but consumers have to do their part too," says Seelbach. BIRTHS Among recent births recorded at Memorial hospital for McHenry county, Woodstock was the Dec. 14 birth of a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kalsch of McHenry; the Dec. 15 birth of a boy to Mr. and Mrs. James Pietryga of McHenry; and the Dec. 17 birth of a boy to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Kaiser of Wonder Lake. sssssssss The National Fire Data center reports ap proximately 82,000 fires killed or injured more than 3,000 people and caused about 340 million dollars in property damage last December. Seelbach says consumers can avoid fires if they use simple precautions. "A spark or a hot wire can ignite a dried out tree. Check each string of lights carefully. If you find a break in the wiring, frayed insulation, a broken bulb or a defective plug, don't use it; replace the string," Seelbach says. Overloading a circuit with too many lights also can cause a fire. "Read manufacturer's instructions carefully and don't use more than the recommended number of lights on one circuit," says Sellbach. To help consumers with Christmas safety, UL engineers have compiled a " C h r i s t m a s S a f e t y C h e c k l i s t . " S e e l b a c h suggests consumers use the checklist to improve safety at holiday time. "The checklist covers information on decorating the house, artificial and real trees, and other safety tips for the holidays. The checklist is a poster featuring Santa and his elves and is a good education tool for children also." l\m of vinegar can cigar, cigarette p i p e o d o r s .
