The win by the Tigers puts them 2-2 in the Fox Valley conference and 6-3 overall. The Warriors slip to 1-3 in the conference and 1-6 overall. The taller Crystal Lake team had a much tougher time than it had expected to against the smaller Warrior team. McHenry's inability to score from the floor when it needed to was the biggest setback. The Warriors shot a mere 37 percent on 17 of 45 from the floor, but the Tigers didn't do much better connecting on 15 of 37 for a 41 percent accuracy mark. Crystal Lake jumped off to an early 4-0 lead, but Dave Smith's three point play put McHenry on tne board right away. Minutes later Smith connected on another basket as the Warriors grabbed a short-lived 9-8 lead. Six-foot-five forward Steve Hill countered for the Tigers with a field goal at 1:25 to put his team ahead 10-9 at the end of the first period. The lead changed hands several times in the second quarter until McHenry forward Steve Babb's free throw tied the game. Bill Hermann's charity toss minutes later put the Warriors ahead 17-16, but the Tigers rallied behind their big men Hill and Jim Teuber (6-6) to grab a 22-21 halftime advantage. The Tigers maintained a five point lead for most of the third period and led 36-31 at the conclusion of it. Qnly the shooting of guard Mike Burgdorf (three baskets in the period) kept the Warriors in the game. McHenry continued to stay within striking distance of Crystal Lake in the fourth quarter, and at the 3:00 mark cut the lead to two Eoints 41-39 on another asket by Burgdorf. The Tigers then went into a stall which almost proved to be their downfall. With :26 remaining Burgdorf stole an errant pass and raced to the basket only to have his layup roll off the rim. Graves was then fouled and made both free throws in a bonus situation to put the score at 43-39. Hermann's basket with six seconds remaining put McHenry within two points, but Graves, immediately fouled after the field goal, again converted both charity tosses to sew up the win. Hill finished with a team leading 18 points for Crystal Lake and Graves had 10 points. Burgdorf led McHenry with his season high of 14 points. The Warriors had a much better game against the Tigers than it had against the Streaks a week ago even though both clubs enjoyed a considerable height advantage. Coach Ken Ludwig was pleased with his team's all around scrappy play, but couldn't help comment on the poor shooting. The Johnsburg high school basketball team was winless after seven games owning the worst record in McHenry county. Marian Central, meanwhile, was 6-1 overall and sitting atop of the SHARK conference with a 2- 0 record. But when the two collided Friday night at Johnsburg, Skyhawk fans got an early Christmas present as they witnessed their team defeat the favored Hurricanes 56- 52. "As a group I was very pleased with our performance," said elated Johnsburg coach Ben Beck. "Our ball movement was a lot better than in past games and we stuck to what our game plan was-to keep them in a half court game." Part of the game plan included shutting down nigh scoring Marian forward S c o t t T r u c k e n b r o d . Averaging 20.8 points per game coming into Friday's contest, the 6-3 swingman was held to 13 points, most of which came from outside shooting late in the second half. Marian Central won the opening tip off and immediately got on the board as junior guard Ed Kennedy connected on a jump shot for a 2-0 lead. But tonight Johnsburg would not roll over and die. Two baskets by Joe Meyers and one each by Tom Pieper and Jeff Fowler gave the Skyhawks a luxury they had not enjoyed during most of this season, a six-point lead. Truckenbrod got his first field goal at 2:40 in the quarter, and Kennedy and Mike Sabatka also tallied two more points, but after the first eight minutes of play Johnsburg led 12-8. Sabatka scored to start the second quarter, but then it was Jeff Bartmann's turn for the spotlight. The senior forward for Johnsburg scored eight of his game high 22 points in the second quarter leading his team to a slim 24-23 halftime advantage. In the second quarter, the Hurricanes had managed their only lead of the night as Kennedy scored a three- point play for a 23-22 advantage. But reserve John Wharton sank both ends of a bonus to give the Skyhawks their lead. Amazingly both squads shot 10 of 31 from the floor during the first half, but Johnsburg got to the free throw line more often making four of eight while Marian was successful on its only three charity tosses. In the third quarter, the Skyhawks outscored the Hurricanes 16-12 for a 40-35 lead. More importantly, Schlender Named A.D. Johnsburg's stingy man-to­ man defense had not allowed Marian's big men, Truckenbrod and center Scott Spengel, a single point during that time. SOphomore reserve Chuck Hartlieb picked up scoring slack for Marian with six points in the quarter, but Bartmann continued to have the hot hand for Johnsburg as he answered with eight points of his own. Truckenbrod opened the fourth quarter with a three point play to cut Johnsburg's lead to 40-38 and seconds later Sabatka tied the game with a 15-foot jump shot. A basket by Meyers and another by Truckenbrod again knotted the score, but then with six minutes to play Pieper was fouled in the act of snooting and sank a pair of free throws to give the Skyhawks a lead they would not relinquish. Pieper would all but seal the win with two more charity tosses for a 52-46 lead with 1:12 remaining, and fittingly Bartmann would score the final basket for Johnsburg on another close range jumper. Following Bartmann in scoring for Johnsburg were Pieper and Meyers who each netted 12 points. Sabatka led Marian with 14 points. For the game, Johnsburg connected on 23 of 49 shots from the floor (46 percent) while Marian made only 23 of 64 attempts (36 percent). But while Johnsburg had held Marian to 10 points below its season scoring average (62.8), one aspect of the game that dissappointed Beck was his teams poor free throw shooting. While Pieper and Jeff Fowler had made some clutch free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter, the team still managed but 10 of 19 for the game; a poor 52 percent. And the next night, this is what hurt Johnsburg. LOSE AT WAUCONDA Although Bartmann and Pieper continued to have fine scoring nights, the Skyhawks let one slip out of their hands Saturday night as they bowed 51-47 to Wauconda in overtime. This time Johnsburg's inability to make the free throw was the difference in the game. Tied at 45-45 after regulation time, the Skyhawks made only two of six charity tosses and missed all four field goal attempts in the five minute overtime. "It's dissappointing that we couldn't have made those free throws," said Beck. "We were winning for most of the game, but we let one get away from us." Johnsburg managed only nine of 22 free throws for the game for a horrendous 41 percent. y Bartmann and Pieper, were two bright spots, however, as each finished with 18 points. "They both had good weekends and its good to see that we are getting some scoring from them," said Beck. The game was tied 23-23 at halftime and Johnsburg led 35-30 after three quarters before allowing the Bulldogs to catch up. Russ Edwards led the winners with 11 points. The win marked the second time this season that Wauconda had beaten Johnsburg. The Bulldogs had won a 58-57 contest during the Round Lake T o u r n a m e n t o v e r Thanksgiving vacation.
