Penny Schultz, also an East campus junior, placed second. Each high school in the area of the McHenry V.F.W. post may send en trants. Gattone and Ms. Schultz wrote and performed speeches on the topic " B u i l d i n g A m e r i c a Together." Gattone will now represent McHenry in district com petition in Elgin. He will be eligible for scholarships and awards as he competes Rather. "Students win more than awards and scholarships when they participate in the V.F.W. Voice of Democracy Scholarship program," said Commander Bob Roberts of V.F.W. Post 4600, in discussing the Broadcast script-writing program conducted annually by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies auxiliary. Some of the fringe benefits, according to Commander Roberts, are increased self-confidence and poise, experience in communicating with others and valuable training in self- expression. For the state winners, there is also the broadening experience of a five-day tour of Washington, D.C., and the opportunity to make lasting friendships with the other state winners. In the 20 years that the V.F.W. and its Ladies auxiliary have sponsored the Voice of_ Democracy program, more than 3,000,000 high school students have participated. Participants write and then tape-record a three-to-five minute broadcast script expressing ttiete^yjfw^jfi "Building ~ » America Together." From among the state winners, sbc national winners are chosen to receive a total of $32,500 in scholarships. "One of the greatest benefits to young people who take part in the program, is that by thinking, writing, and speaking up for their country, they gain a better appreciation of their obligation to maintain our nation's freedom heritage," Commander Roberts said. The VA Mobile Home Loan program guaranteed 9,389 loans ^during FY'80. The increases continued through October which posted an 11.8 percent jump over the VA loans guaranteed in the same month a year ago. According to George Alexander of the VA Loan Guarantee Service, 38 percent of all the mobile home loans made in October were for multi-section (double-wide) homes at an average of approximately $24,500 each. Alexander said that, to date, the VA has guaranteed 52,689 mobile home loans for a total value of some $771.2 million. The majority of those outstanding VA loans, about 77 percent, covered mobile-manufactured homes placed in rental parks, said Alexander:. ' "Clearly, the VA is playing an important and expanding role in helping Americans purchase the affordable mobile-manufactured housing that they want and need," Alexander said. "The mobile-manufactured home is a vital source of decent, quality housing for veterans, and all homebuyers." ' MHI President Walter L. Benning says the VA ilk* creases "reflect the growth of the industry in general. "With 1MS than four percent of potential homebuyers even able to qualify for the loan to pur chase a new site-built house today, more and more people are seriously con- s i d e r i n g m o b i l e - manufactured housing," Benning said. "In fact, some experts predict that by 1990 fully 75 percent of all new housing will be factdfy-built S to some degree." MHI is the Washington, D.C. area national association representing manufactured home builders and their supplier companies.
