\ X Average Severe Storm 'Model' w Average storm duration at any point is about 14 hours / Snowfall Sleet area Glaze area LEGEND A = Sleet ^ = Freezing rain X = Snow In the average severe winter snowstorm in Illinois, about 14 percent of the state or 8,000 square miles recieves six inches or more of snow and more than half of the state is covered by one inch or more of snow. Less than three percent of the storm area may receive 12 or more inches of snow. This picture or "model" of an average severe storm was developed from a study of 304 winter storms in Illinois by the Illinois State Water survey, a division of the Department of Energy and Natural Resources. In reviewing this study for Illinois Winter Storm Preparedness week, just over, Michael Witte, acting director of ENR, noted that a storm is termed severe when a location in Illinois receives six inches or more of snow in 48 hours or less or when there is damaging ice over at least 5,000 square miles. Illinois has an average of about five such storms during winter. Witte said the model shows that the typical severe winter storm moves from WSW to ENE across the state. It typically begins about 11 a.m. CST and continues at any point for a little over 14 hours. The heavy snow area of six in ches or more is found about 75 to 100 miles north of the surface low pressure center causing the storm. Sleet and freezing rain often accompany the severe snowstorm. The center of the freezing rain area of sleet may overlap both the snow and the ice areas. It is not uncommon for one location to experience both rain and sleet during the storm. In the average storm, the freezing rain covers an area of about 8,400 square miles. The weather conditions most likely to produce the pattern of snow, sleet, and freezing rain in the model is a low pressure system developing in Colorado that moves southeast but then turns northeast up the Ohio River valley, Witte said. Fortunately, he notes, only a small percentage of lows that develop in Colorado each winter produce a severe storm in Illinois. These facts about winter storms and information about how to prepare for them are available in "The Cold Hard Facts About Winter Storms," a 12-page booklet free from the Illinois State Water Survey, Box 5050, Station A, Champaign, 111., 61820. This and other guides for coping with winter storms are also available from the local Emergency Services and Disaster Agency office. Keepin' Healthy by 1 , Did you know that a good night's sleep is one of the essential elements in reducing your risk of illness? What is a good night's sleep? That's hard to define because it's not the same for everyone. Eight hours of sleep may be too much for some people but not enough for others. Normal amounts of sleep can vary from Ave to 10 hours a night. And there are even a few people who habitually get as little as two or three hours' sleep a night without harming their health. You will know when you are getting a good night's sleep because you'll feel satisfied with the quantity and quality of sleep you are getting. Satisfied sleepers have regular sleep habits - they fall asleep and awaken at more or less the same time in each 24 hour period. Even with normal sleepers, the time between turning off the lights and falling asleep will vary from to person. It usually ces from 10 to 30 minutes; although for some people, it may take an hour or more. The amount of sleep also varies from person to person and from age to age. A newborn will usually sleep about 16 hours a day,, although it may not seem! like that much tir, the) parents. At age oo£, sleep time decreases to about 13 hours. By young adulthood it's down to seven or eight hours. Most adults in the 30 to 50 age range, sleep seven-and-a-half to eight- and-a-half hours. The elderly sleep about six hours each night. A person who occasionally, has trouble sleeping is probably experiencing a natural response to some acute, temporary stress. If you sometimes have trouble sleeping, you should try doing things that are more relaxing during the two or three hours before bedtime. Light reading, watching television - assuming you are not watching a horror show - pleasant con versation, or some light exercise will help you relax physically and emotionally. It's important that you not form the habit of taking a drink or a sleeping pill before bedtime. These drugs may very well interfere with getting a good night's sleep. There are four stages of sleep and they are all necessary to good health. These stages repeat themselves about every 90 minutes. Stage one - "alpha sleep" - is the time when muscles relax and the pulse slows. This stage lasts about 10 mintues. During the second stage, which lasts about half an hour, there is a burst of brainwave activity. In stage three, brain waves become slower, muscles relax and breathing is easy and even. The sleeper then enters stage four, or "delta" sleep. This is the dreaming stage - the deepest sleep of all - and the most important stage as far as health is concerned. Sleeping pills or alcohol can suppress this important phase of sleep if they are taken for several weeks. If you are deprived of delta sleep for a period of time, you may become depressed and apathetic. And if your dreams are suppressed by drugs, you may not only develop serious emotional problems but also increase your risk of physical illness. For these reasons, the Illinois Department of Public Health advises against the use of sleeping pills or alcohol for inducing sleep on more than ap oc casional basis.
