She can put her mind to rest by asking at the local S.S. office exactly what she will need to qualify for S.S. benefits. Tt^ .erticie .if "Coping- Choosing A Therapist") The problem of choosing a therapists not exactly the same as the problem of choosing a physician or dentist. In therapy, the ability of the client and therapist to communicate freely and comfortably is an absolute necessity. (Of course, it's important to have a close relationship with your doctor also, but he can treat your physical illness without the close relationship.) Since the therapy process depends on communication and trust, it is essential to choose a - therapist that is competent and one whom you can relate to. One of the essential requirements of a competent therapist is the credentials that he or she possess&uDo. not hesitate to questioiHhe therapist about credentials (education, internship, experience, theoretical framework). Any competent therapist will be more than accommodating fa sharing all of this information. A "pseudo therapist" will evade these questions or present quest ionable t ctedeittials.1 - E s t a b l i s h i n g credentials of' a theraj: while necessary, is only of the problem : how does one go about finding a therapist that you can relate to? In many cases this v dilemma can be solved by talking with a friend, relative, minister, or doctor who may suggest a particular person that they think might work well with you. X Of course, the only sure way of deciding this issue is . to take the "plunge" and see a therapist. It will become obvious in a very short * period of time whether this is a person that you can communicate with and share the improtant details of your particular problem. Modt important is to .be able to trust your own feelings; it is not your fault if you cannot feel comfortable with a particular therapist and it is essential that you have this trusting relationship.
