The With the score deadlocked at 56-56 at the end of regulation play, the Skyhawks won the game at the free throw line in the overtime period converting seven of nine attempts. Jeff Bartmann's layup with seconds remaining added the icing on the cake. The Rockets were vic timized by personal fouls all night as starters Doug Miller, Brad Christiansen, Paul Horak, and Henry Halverson all fouled out. With Richmond committing a staggering 28 Warn fouls, the Skyhawks took ad vantage of the opportunity converting 27 of 38 free throw attempts. Johnsbifl-g got off to a red hot start making seven of 11 field goal attempts and eight of nine free throws in the opening period for a 22-8 lead. •• "• . « The Rockets, however, cutscored the Skyhawks 13- 12 in the second period and trailed 34-21 at halftone. The iunior forward sank both charity tosses giving Richmond a 46- 44 lead. A Johnsburg free throw countered by a Dave Otto field goal then gave the Rockets a 48-45 lead. Bart mann then tied the game for Johnsburg with a three-point play. With under 5:00 to play, Richmond scored six unanswered points to take a 54-48 lead. After Johnsburg's Joe Meyers and Christiansen traded field goals, Bartmann scored to cut the lead to 56- 52. With under a minute to play, Skyhawk forward Tom Pieper was twice fouled in the act of shooting and converted all four free throws sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, two costly Richmond tur novers by Mark Greene forced thejlockets to foul in an attempt to get the ball back. But Jeff Fowler, Terry Boyer,- and Pieper each canned two charity tosses, and Bartmann netted one to preserve the win. Bartmann led Johnsburg in scoring with 20 points, while Pieper and Meyers followed with 11 and nine points, respectively. Richmond actually scored more field goals than Johnsburg 23 Jo 18, but only got to the free throw line 22 times making 14. Of course the Warriors with no wins and Dundee with a single victory, didn't help much. The Gators of Gary Collines were 8-1, the Blue Streaks 5-1, Jacobs and Central both had 6-3 records. Cary Grove managed an even split with 3-3. Crown last in the conference managed a 5-3 outside record. The Warriori with 0-5 and Dundee 1-6 rounds out the Fox Valley records against the opposition. To review the holiday games for the Fox Valley, Crystal Lake South won the Grayslake tourney. Crown lost the consolation championship ;r. the same tourney. Woodstock won their opener at Wheeling, and they lost 66-64 to St. Viator in the second round. The Warriors lost both games at Wheeling. Jacobs was defeated by Kaneland at the Hampshire Tournament, but went on to take third place. Dundee lost consolation finals at Elgin to Fremd, who the Warrior's opponent tomorrow night. Crystal Laki Central split four games at DeKalb. Cary Grove did not participate in a holiday tourney this 'year Bob Kies, former Johnsburg Skyhawk coach, is riding high these days in Quincy. His Notre Dame squad finished second in the Macomb Tournament losing to Monmouth in the finals. For their season performance of 12 wins and the one loss, the Raiders of Notre Dame are rated fourth in Class A in the state. Of course the likeable coach has to take a back seat to the Blue Devils of Quincy High, wh are ranked first in AA, and have a 46 game winning streak, 11 short of the record held by Thornridge in the days of Quinn Buckner, Lloyd Batts and company. Coach Ken Ludwig had an enjoyable time at the finals of the Wheeling Tourney. All that the coach had to do was sit through eight overtimes before North Chicago emerged the winner 76-62 over Maine West. The eight overtime ties a £tate record, but is still five short of the national record held by teams in West Virginia, and Tennessee. Anyway according to Coach Ken, it was a long evening. The top game in the Fox Valley tonight will pit the two leaders, Crystal Lake South who will invade the Blue Streak gym. Both teams are undefeated in conference play, and one ,of them will have to fall. The Woodstock gym should bea rather loud place to be tonight. Going down memory lane this week we take you back to the 1956-57 season, when the Warriors of Cliff Fulton won a hard fought, thrilling game over the Scouts from Lake Forest 45-42. Huemann led the locals with 10 pts., as all seven Warriors scored in the game. McHENRY VS. Marian dropped to 7-4 overall Marian held a 30-25 lead early in the third quarter before th^-Green Wave erupted St. Edwards shut out the visiting Hurricanes through the rest of the third quarter and part way into the fourth, taking a 46-32 lead St/fedward bounded off to an 8-2 lead early in the game, but Marian fought back to tie it 12-12 at the end of the first quarter In the second quarter, the Green Wave maintained a narrow lead thanks to several Hurricane tur novers Marian tied the game at 16-16 midway through the period, but the Elgin Catholic school quickly went back ahead until late in the half when Scott Truckenbrod canned two frjee throws to give the Hurricanes a 23-22 lead, their first lead of the game. St. Edward, however, came back and took a 25-23 half- time lead. Mike Sabatka completed a three-point play to open the third quarter and give Marian a 26-25 advantage. Baskets by Chuck Hartlieb and Sabatka then put the Hurricanes up by five points at 30-25 >> After a St. Edward bucket sliced the Marian lead to three, Dave Rickert restored the five-point Hurricane advantage with a score. But for Marian that was the last time the ball would fall through the hoop through the rest of the third quarter. The Green Wave revived and steamrolled over the visitors, scoring 13 unan swered points and built up a 40-32 lead entering the final period The onslaught continued in the final frame as the hosts rolled on to a 46-32 ad vantage. Marian started a belated rally later in the period, slicing the score to 50-42 on a 25-footer by Scott Truckenbrod. But that was as close as Marian got as St. Edward won easily. Truckenbrod paced the Hurricanes with 20 points, while Sabatka, Rickert and Hartlieb each had eight points. Four Green Wave players scored in double figures Marian will now have a 10- day break before resuming court action on Friday, Jan. 15 at home against Marengo. SHAW MEDIA NEWS SCtVKJ On The Court: . j • / > • • • » • McHenry at Crown, Fremd Coach Ken Ludwig will get his McHenry Warriors back in the swing of things when they travel to Crown tonight for a FVC game The Warriors coming off two losses in the Wheeling Holiday Tournament, will play the last place team in the conference, the Vikings from Crown Gone are the glory days of last year's Crown squad, which went undefeated in the Fox Valley and owned a 26-2 overall record. Although the Vikings are winless in the Fox Valley they have managed to win five games this season. With no Gary Gliesman to depend upon. Coach Jim Hinkle is relying upon the bench from last year's fine team. The Vikings are led by senior Mike Evans, and fellow classmates Solomon Goner. John Bumbales. Glen Johnson, and Tim Cifone. Junior Mark Szczepanski, at 6-3, is the giant of the squad, and sees plenty of action. The Warriors, who had a . fine second half against Wheeling, but fell short on the scoreboard 63-58, will be looking for their second win of the season. For once in only a few times this season, McHenry won't be facing some tall giants on the opposition. Tomorrow night the Warriors travel to Fremd, and Ken Ludwig will match wits with an old coaching rival Moe Tharp, former coach at Zion. Fremd a member of the Mid Suburban North conference is currently in fifth place, with a 1-2 record, but an overall record of 5-5. Fremd lost a holiday contest to Elgin 80-78 in the opening round of the Elgin Tourney at Christmas. Johnsburg at Marengo Forget everything you know about water conditioners.
