SHORT HISTORY OF CONSUMER ELECTRONICS Contributing to the birth of consumer electronics were many earlier landmarks. Perhaps the most significant were Edison's 1877 invention of the phonograph, Fleming's development of the electron tube in the 1890s. Marconi's first wireless tranmission in 189S and Deftaest's 1906 in ventions which led 'to the elec tronic amplifier. Each passing year takes something from us. -Horace. in the July 'others' Man- Center, writin August issue Ual nMpwiny "It's been a long time com ings but women are at last find ing a sympathetic ear in the medical community, and in so ciety in general, for an age-old complaint---painful menstrua tion, V says Dr. Birnbaum. He asks us to consider that while 80 to 90 percent of women have experienced some or all of these complaints--mild to se vere abdominal cramps, back ache, tender breasts, shooting pains in the legs, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and general body weakness--"only perhaps seven percent ever con sulted a physician for relief." "But, times have changed: in the 1980s women are asking questions and getting answers," explains the magazine's editor, Janet Spencer Kmg. "At this time of year, as die busy fall season looms ahead and the average woman's day expands to 36 hours--whether she's working, taking care of children, or both--it's impor tant to know why a normal physiological function causes pain and what can be done to al leviate it/' A bi-monthly publication, Mothers' Manual is a magazine, for new or expectant mothers. It is designed to explore the prob lems, options and challenges encountered by today's mother, and help her cope wkh cl The magazine's re] 'covers topics from children's health to women's health and sexual problems, from infant sleep patterns and dreams to overworked mothers. From the fears and satisfactions of father hood to mother/daughter rival ry, from fashion to new pro ducts, toys and equipment. In his article, "Dispelling the Myths of the Menses," Dr. Birnbaum reports on the latest scientific research and the isola tion of a previously unknown hormone called prostaglandin that is, he explains, "account able for the painful periods that many women endured. '* Doctors who have been pre scribing a new drug to counter act the hormone, for about a year now, are very encouraged by the results. He suggests that there are more traditional cures, how ever, that do have a baais in sci- entific fact that can be tried first. "Aspirin, scientists now , realize, is actually a mikl non specific prostaglandin inhibitor. Heat is well known to be a mus cle relaxant and so does soothe 4 crampy uterus." Among his other su; are decreasing salt cium tablets (consult your doc tor first), and exercise which docs have a direct effect on hormonrpiroduction. Premenstrual tension, or PMTS as it is referred to by physicians, was long considered only a "psychological" prob lem. It's not, according to Dr. Birnbaum. One effective therapy for PMTS is vitamin Bt. "Without resorting to taking a regimen of special vitamin pills ycfu can increase the amount of B« in your diet by eat ing blackstrap molasses, wheat bran and germ, whole>grain cereals, liver, heart and kid ney," he su ggests The doctor also believes that keeping trade of your cycle- menstrual and ovulation--on _ i<ndi tnilifcg when symptoms occur, is a Alt Merchondise Priced As Marked Select Groups!
