McHenry s leading scorer failed to reach double figures Against the Blue Streaks, the Lady Warriors trailed only 13-11 at the end of a well-played first quarter Center Karen Karpavicius netted all nine of her points in the period. But in the second quarter the roof fell in as the Streaks' full court press forced the Lady Warriors to turn the ball over several times and not get off a good shot. McHenry failed to score a field goal in the quarter, and averted the eight-minute shutout only when Terry Blume connected on a free throw with 2:J&> remaining. Woodstock. meanwhile, scored 12 points in the quarter and moved out to a 25-12 lead at the in termission Blume then scored six of the seven Lady Warrior points in the third quarter, but the Streaks continued to dominate the inside game and led 35-19 after three quarters Lisa Readel scored 12 points and pulled down as many rebounds for the winners, while teammate Plaindealer Kim Adams netted 10 points. Center Kecia Kneedson also played a major role in the win with eight points and a game high 13 rebounds. Karpavicius took scoring honors for McHenry with nine points although she didn't score after the first quarter. Debbie Koerber and Blume added eight and seven points, respectively, and reserve guard Renee Mezzano also played well in a losing cause with six points in the fourth quarter. CARPENTERSVILLE :It was the same old story against the Cardunals Saturday night as the Lady Warriors fell apart in the second quarter and never recovered. McHenry had played Dundee even for the first period and trailed only 8-6. But with the Cardunals ahead 16-10, the Lady Warriors again fell victim to their own mistakes and were outscored 9-2 to trail 25-12 at intermission. Blume scored six of her McHenry leading eight points in the third quarter, but the rout was on. Dundee scored 22 points in each of the third and fourth quarters to win easily. McHenry managed only 11 points in the final period. Koerber again followed Blume in scoring with seven points, while Mezzano and Karpavicius each finished with six. (815) 385-9233 CARPENTERSVILLE , - The McHenry Warriors split a pair of games over the weekend defeating Fox Valley opponent Crown 72-62 and losing to Fremd of Palatine 58-48 The split leaves Ken Ludwig's team with a 2-3 reco/tfin the conference and a 2-9 overall mark. Crown is still wir.less in the con ference at 0-5. In Fridy night's game against the Vikings, the Warriors took a 16-point half time lead, then hung on in the final minutes for victory. Playing the best half of a game this season, McHenry lost no time in getting on the board when Mike Bauml canned a 15-footer to open the scoring. The lead see-sawed back and forth until Bill Her mann's jump shot at 3:45 put the Warriors ahead, and ahead to stay for the rest of the evening. Bauml and Steve Babb added baskets and McHenry was off and running with a 20-13 first period lead. In the second quarter, the Vikings turned the ball 6v$r several times which led to several easy Warrior^ baskets. With all five local players recording their points, and Randy Lively coming off the bench and adding a couple layups, McHenry built its lead up to 43-27 at halftime. Warrior fans were buzzing at the concession stand at intermission on the fine play of the locals during the first half, and what they dreaded in the talk actually happened Hti-inp the third period. After Mike Burgdorf's basket at 5:30 which gave McHenry a 51-31 lead, disaster struck like a whirlwind. Poor shooting, numerous fouls which sent Burgdorf and Hermann to the bench with their fourth personals, and 11 turnovers enabled the hosts to come back. The Vikings outscored the Warriors 14-2 down the stretch and trimmed their lead to 57-49 going into the final period. When Hermann was banished to the pines with his fifth personal early in the final period, Gary Freund made his presence known. The junior guard picked the slack by netting seven valuable points and he also picked off a steal thet literally'took the Vikings out of the game. The Warriors contnued to pressure the hosts and eventually won the game 72- 62. It was a good win for the Ludwig crew. For the first time this season they played a team of their own size and although out rebounded 30-29, McHenry forced Crown into 30 turnovers, while com mitting just 21 themselves. WARRIORS BOW AT FREMD PALATINE -On Saturday night, the Warriors travelled to Fremd to take on Moe Tharp's big crew. Using a pair of 6-5 220 pounders to their advantage, the Vikings dominated the backboards and won handily 58-48. McHenry trailed 17-11 at the end of the first period, with Bauml, Hermann, and Lively all getting into the scoring act. In the second period, the Warriors wfddled the ' Vikings' lead down to just four points at 28-24 as Steve Babb scored several buckets to revive a comeback. With some fine outside shooting, McHenry made it an entirely new ballgame in the third quarter and tied the game at 34-34. But then, once again disaster struck only this time the Warriors were unable to overcome it. Two straight turnovers, a foul, and a bad pass gave the hosts a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. F r e m d o u t s c o r e d McHenry 18-14 in the final period led by the efforts of Kamil and Jenkins as the Warriors fell to 2-9 overall and the hosts evened their ^ record at 6-6. Coach Ludwig said after the game, "Fremd didn't beat us, we beat ourselves," But he was quick to add, "I was pleased with our per- formancs this weekend, especially the way our kids hustled. If we continue this way, we are going to sur prise some people along the way." McHenry will finally return to the friendly con fines this weekend for a pair of games. Friday night the Cardunals of Dundee (1-4 & 3-10) will be here for a conference confrontation, and Saturday night the Wildcats of Libertyville be be here for a non-conference tilt. The wip kept the Indians in sole possession of first place in the conference with a 3-0 record and also improved their overall mark to 7-5. The Skyhawks dropped to 1-2 and 3-11. Johnsburg will play a non- conference game against N o r t h w e s t M i l i t a r y Academy Tuesday night then resume SHARK con ference action on Friday, Jan. 15 wheh it hosts Hononegah. In the first quarter against Marengo, it was Johnsburg that looked like the league leading team. Guard Terry Boyer ignited the Skyhawks with his all-around scrappy play as he dished off for several assists and forced several Indian turnovers on defense. Johnsburg left Marengo vand its home crown stunned at the end of the first quarter with a 10-4 lead. Jeff Bart- mann and Tom Pieper each scored two field goals to pace the Skyhawks. * But after Marengo again controlled the second period tip off, it was Hansen's turn to take over. With barely one minute elapsed, the senior forward completed a three point play, the crowd came to life, and the Indians were back in the game. W h i l e J o h n s b u r g ' s shooting soon went cold from the field, Marengo even tually caught up and took a 19-17 lead on a basket by Steve Waeghe with one minute remaining. Hansen scored three other field goals in the quarter as the Indians roared back to take a 21-19 halftime lead. Marengo and Johnsburg traded baskets for most of the third quarter, but the Indians increased their lead to 37-29 after three quarters. The Indians got balanced scoring in the quarter as six players combined for 16 points. The Skyhawks, meanwhile, got eight of their 10 points from a hot-shooting Bartmann, but the offense sputtered with Boyer on the bench with four fouls. Johnsburg made a strong comeback in the final quarter behind the play of Pieper and Bartmann, but couldn't cut the Marengo lead to under six points. The Skyhawks also began fouling to get possession of the ball, but the strategy backfired as the Indians made good on all eight free throw attempts. For the game, they made a clutch 13 of 14. Johnsburg managed to get to the free throw line only eight times during the game, making seven, but it was not to be the Skyhawks' night. The Indians weren't whistled for a foul until three minutes had elapsed into the second period. "I thought we played well tonight," said Johnsburg coach Ben Beck. "Our kids really came out of the blocks in the first quarter, but we were worn down by the fourth quarter. "One thing about our team though," he concluded. "There's a big difference with how our team plays now than it did when we first started." Bartmann finished with scoring honors for the Skyhawks with 18 points, while he also had eight rebounds. Joe Meyers finished with nine points and a leading 11 boards, and Pieper added eight points. Waeghe and Bob Stuntz each followed Hansen in scoring for the Indians with eight points. Stuntz tied Hansen with 12 rebounds, and as a team Marengo held a slight 34-28 advantage.
