M PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY *, lttt by Dick Rabbitt Blair Johnson hit •' 15- at the busier at the idee Cardunals beat the j Warriors 62-60 in a Valley thriller Friday night at Buckner gym. "The Warriors, who had ttfclled since midway through the opening period, pulled to a tie with eight seconds on the clock thanks to a Mike Bauml 12-footer that brought the small home crowd to its feet. Bauml led all scorers with 18 points. The Cardunals, however, were able to get the ball downcourt for Johnson's last second heroics, and a Warrior defeat. The loss by the Warriors lift both McHenry and Dundee tied for sixth place in» the conference with 2-4 Nfcords. The Warriors are 2- 10 overall and the Cardunals are now 4-11. t)nce again it was the same old story as the Wariors fell behind and then tried to play catch up for the ' rest of the evening. First half defensive lapses that enabled the Cards to score some easy baskets led to the defeat as* much as the 30 , turnovers made by the Warriors did. Randy Lively scored the Tops McHenry 62"60.1 Scoreboard 1 Mflrsngo Tops Mdrisn first basket of the game for Mchenry, but then Dundee assumed control of the first quarter. Bill Hermann's three point play midway through the period knotted the score at 11-11, but the Cards again took matters under control and led 22-16 at the end of the first period. McHenry was outscored 16-14 in the second period to trail 38-30 at intermission. Bauml's eight points and Mike Burgdorrs six ac counted for all the Warriors' scoring. In the third period, McHenry abandoned its zone defense and switched to a man-to-man which brought the team back to life. The Warriors scrapped, hustled, rebounded with some vigor, and at 2:30 in the period Mark Peterson hit his first varsity basket to put McHenry within three at 44- 41. , Bauml added another basket before the close of the period, but Dundee led 48-43 at the end of three. The Warriors didn't make their move until 4:00 remained on the clock, Trailing 58-50, Hermann got McHenry going with a 10- footer from the side and Burgdorf followed with a layup. The Warriors then went into a dry spell and com mitted several costly tur novers, but the Cards couldn't put the game away as they missed everything from the field. Burgdorf hit a 10-footer, then with : 17 remaining Bauml hit a 20-footer to pull the Warriors within two at 60-58. A costly turnover gave the ball back to McHenry and Bauml canned his 12-footer to knot the score at 60-60 with only eight seconds remaining. The rest is history as Johnson's final shot hit nothing but net. The Warriors played a splendid second half and at one stretch outscored the Cards 10-2 in their final drive. But turnovers played a glaring role in the game as McHenru committed 30 and Dundee 24, not good basketball by any means for this time of the season. One cheerful note is the improving play of sophomore Mark Peterson who scored two baskets and grabbed several rebounds. McHenry's Saturday tilt against Libertyville was called off due to the cold weather and has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13. The Warriors will travel to conference leader Crystal Lake South for a 8:00 game Friday. The Gators of Gary Collins are 6-0 in the Fox Valley and 15-1 overall. The Buss-Stop overcame a 34-32 halftime deficit and defeated St. Regis Pub 69-59. St. Regis led after the first 20 minutes because of the inside scoring of Brian Miller and Scott Strange (each 10 points in the half), and the outside shooting of Steve Knox (8 points). The Buss-Stop, however, came back in the second half and clamped on a tough defensive display which forced some bad Regis shots and key turnovers. ^fter regaining the lead eajrly in the second half, the Buss-Stop forced Regis out oC their zone defense and tna upped the margin to as much as 18 points. The closest Regis would get before running out of gas was seven points, that with eight minutes to play. Regis' Brian Miller led all scorers with 22 points, while Buss-Stop's Jim Heard netted 18 points. Randy Neiss (14 points), Steve Kasperczyk (12 points), and Steve Buss (10 points) all provided balanced scoring for the winners. Knox finished with 15 points for Regis. M c H E N R Y - K a r e n Karpavicius sewed 15 of her game high 17 points in the first half to lead the McHenry high school girls basketball team to a 37-27 Win over Fox Valley op ponent Crystal Lake Central Thursday night. Both the Lady Warriors and the Tigers are now 1-2 in conference play. "I thought we played a good game," said McHenry coach Pat Wirtz. "We didn't let a bigger team get to us like we did earlier in the year." The Lady Warriors led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter and 23-16 at halftime. In the third quarter, McHenry slowed down the tempo of the game and made only one of seven shots for two points. But Crystal Lake shot horribly from the field and managed but two field goals in the third quarter to still trail 25-20. The Lady Warriors had a 10-point lead cut to three in the fourth quarter, but then Greta Larsen, Debbie .Koerber, and Terry Blume picked up the slack with some key field goals to give Wirtz his second win of the year. Blume had a fine all- around game for McHenry aS she grabbed a team- leading 11 rebounds and also scored 10 points. With Karpavicius pulling down nine rebounds and Koerber adding another eight, McHenry outboarded Crystal Lake 31-28 for the game. Also indicative of the Lady Warriors' tenacious defense and hustle was the fact that they had 20 recoveries to only five for the Tigers. Karpavicius, Blume, Geiger, and Renee Mezzano all had four recoveries each. The Tigers made but 12 of 50 field goal attempts while the Lady Warriors were good on 16 of 37 attempts.
