She was born June 30, 1923, in Centerville, la., to Lewis and Teresa (Mascarro) VareSe Ms. Varese was a resident of Mc Henry 18 years, for­ merly of Chicago, where she had worked 20 years as a supervisor for the White Cap Mfg. Co. Survivors are four sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Carta of Chicago, Mrs. Nellie Bac- zynski of Novato, Calif., Mrs. Jean Marquart of' Mission Viejo, Calif, and Mrs. Albert (Delia) Scaglione of Berwyn, 111. IHso surviving are four brothers, Joseph of Cen­ terville, la., Anthony, Ralph and John, all of McHenry; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangement* are being handled by the George R Justen & Son funeral home. JENNIE SUNDT Jennie' Sundt, 89, 328 W. Rand road, Lakemoor, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Royal Terrace, McHenry. She was born Apr. 9,1892, in Chicago, to James and Mathilda (Hawkinsen) Strand. Mrs. Sundt was a resident of the Lakemoor area over 25 years. She is survived by a (daughter, Mrs. George (Mathilda) Kangles of Chicago; a son Warren Sundt of Brodhead, Wis.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her husband Ernest preceded her in death in August, 1963. She was also preceded in death by a son Ernest Jr., August, 1981; a son Edward, November, 1979 and a daughter Winifred Arnold. Visitation, funeral ser­ vices and interment were private and arrangements were handled by the George R. Justen & Son funeral home. EDWARD SASS Edward J. Sass, 83, 601 S. Bally road, McHenry, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Crystal Pines Nursing home, Crystal Lake. Mr. Sass is survived by his wife Helen. Visitation will be held Friday afternoon and evening at the George R. Justen & Son funeral home. A Funeral Mass - will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary's church. LAWRENCE WICKSTROM Lawrence A. Wickstrom, 1801 W. Indian Ridge drive, S u n n y s i d e e s t a t e s , McHenry, died late Tuesday, Jan. 19, at . McHenry hospital. He was 51 years old, born in Superior, Wis. Mar. 30, 1930, the son of William and Idabelle (Jordan) Wickstrom. Mr. Wickstrom lived in the McHenry area about 20 years, having come from Wisconsin. He had been employed as a mechanic for Arnold May builders, Rich­ mond. Survivors are his wife S h i r l e y ( B a l l o w e ) Wickstrom; two stepsons, Tim Ballowe of McHenry and Tom Ballowe of Libertyville, 111.; a step­ daughter, Mrs. John (Terry) Bailey of McHenry; eight step-grandchildren and a sister in Seattle, Wash. A brother preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m„ Friday in the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home, with Pagtor Thomas Lowery of the First United Methodist church officiating and burial in W o o d l a n d c e m e t e r y , McHenry. Visitation was scheduled from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. MARGARET ROMANO" Margaret Schuberth Romano, wife of the late Frank J. Romano, died Saturday, Jan. 16. She is survived by her children, Frank J. Jr. (Patricia), Henry S. (Patricia) and Eugene C. (Renee) Romano; a sister Charlotte Bacon; 15 grand­ children and eight great­ grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer H. Schuberth. » Visitation was held at Donnellan-Fitzgerald- Franklin funeral home, 10045 Skokie boulevard, from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday. The family and friends met at St. Joan of Arc church Tuesday at 10 a.m., where a Mass was celebrated. In­ terment was in St. Mary cemetery, McHenry. POSTPONE AUCTION The Elks Lodge No. 1043 in Woodstock has announced that its annual charity auction has been rescheduled from Jan. 23 to itJan. 30 due to the inclement weather. St. Clara's Court No. 569, W.C.O.F., celebrated its twenty-sixth anniversary in St. Mary's hall. Mrs. Kate Worts, who is serving her fourth year as chief ranger, was presented with a gift. The court was organized by Mrs. John H. Miller and Mrs. Catherine Schneider on Jan. 4, 1906, and had 20 charter members. At present it has a membership of about 200. Thomas A. Bolger of McHenry and B. T. Winn of Ringwood were elected directors from their locals at the meeting of the Pure Milk association of McHenry County held at Crystal Lake. Over 900 members were present at the annual meeting. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 15, 1942). A change in ownership of one of this city's oldest business houses took place Jan. 1,1942, when Joseph W. Freund, who has conducted a clothing and men's store in West McHenry for over 50 years, sold the business to his son-in-law, Homer G. Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald had been an employee of Mr. Freund for about five years. Mr. Freund marked the fiftieth year of business in the same building on Oct. 23, 1940. Eleanor Althoff, R.N., and Betty Althoff, student nurse at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Althoff. This is the largest road construction improvement in the county in any one year to date. No road in this immediate area was named. St. Peter's parish of Spring Grove won the fourth annual parish basketball tour­ nament, sponsored by the McHenry Council Knights of Columbus at McHenry. Paced by Eon May with 17 points and Loren Miller with 16, St. Peter's easily defeated St. Patrick's of McHenry by a score of 65-37. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 21, 1972). The City Council's concern over need for a land fill area for disposal of sludge from the sewage disposal plant has been heightened by instructions from the State of Illinois. With expectation of the plant being completed during the coming summer, the City Council is faced with a real problem. The council is seeking approval of the petition of Wiwam DeVries for land fill operations at a site northwest of Woodstock. U. S. Senator Charles M. Percy spoke on the condition of the economy during a press conference at the Anthony Varese home. The Warrior Cagers dropped two crucial games and slipped into third place. They lost to Barrington and North Chicago. Underwriters Set To Meet Legislators . The McHenry County Association of Life Un­ derwriters will meet at the Branded Steak House, Rt. 31 and 14, Jan. 22 at 9 a.m., announced James Longh- way, CLU, president. Longh- way further announced that Senator Jack Schaefer and Reps. Jill Zwick and Dick Klemm have accepted in­ vitations % attend this meeting for the purpose of d i s c u s s i n g c u r r e n t legislation that pertains to insurance matters. Such changes involve and would effect a general rate in­ crease, providing for estimated increases in charges for the following classes of customers: Residential • 19.5%; Residential Space Heating Customers 19.5%; Water Heating - 19.5%; Commercial, Industrial and Governmental • 19.5%; Gover­ nmental Pumping - 19.5%; Transit Services - 19.4%; Street and Area Lighting • 14.3%. The proposed chbrges would increase the bills of a residen tial customer using 300 kilowat­ thours in any month by $4.73 per month (19.0%) averaged over the year. If the customer used 600 kilowatthours a mon th, the corresponding increase would be $9.47 (19.5%) and H 1,000 kilowatthours, *15.7* (19.6%). The increases shown include estimated average 1903 fuel adjustment and revenue taxes but exclude charges for optional light bulb service. The proposed increases therefore, vary slightly from the above amounts depending on place of residence whether the customer chosen bulb service.
