Bauml, who finished with 18 points against the Cardunals, will lead his team against the conference leading Crytstal Lake South Gators tonight. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD The Sixth Annual John- sburg Oldtimers Club "Hit and Run" baseball banquet was held Monday night at the Johnsburg Community Club Hall and the affair went well into extra innings. The annual event, which attracted a crowd of nearly 300, was emceed by Vince Lloyd, WGN radio's voice of the Chicago Cubs. Other guest speakers included Ross Baumgarten, pitcher for the White Sox; Bruce Froemming, National league umpire, Bob Logan, sports writer for the Chicago Tribune; John Cox, a * member of the Cubs front office, and Earl Walsh, famed S.I.H. columnist for the McHenry Plaindealer. Part of the program in cluded the formal scholarship presentation to Randy Wakitsch, the 1981 recipient of the Oldtimers Club award. Randy was unable to attend the event, however, and his father Jerry Wakitsch accepted the award for him. Following dinner, each of the speakers took his turn to express his feelings about the professional sports teams in Chicago, Vince Lloyd started the fireworks and immediately focused our attention on the upcoming Super Bowl game between Cincinnati and San Francisco. "Imagine the national embarrassment that one of these team's fans is going to suffer," he said. "But here in Chicago, we Bear fans don't have to suffer like that. ^ "Think of the Los Angeles Dodgers who were down three games to one in the World Series," he continued. "In California they worried, but did we? Of course not, our team was safe at home." Bob Logan was quick to point out that the Bears are actually Chicago's most popular team. Why? "They only lose once a week," he offered. He added that the Chicago should bring back Dave Kingman, but only to play tight end for the Bears. Logan went on to point out that the definition of a Cub fan is a sober White Sox fan, and he left us with this thought: "Winning isn't everything, in Chicago it's nothing." Lloyd then turned the microphone over to Baumgarten and said of the promising southpaw, "Here now is a guy who wanted to get to the major leagues, but instead wound up with the White Sox." All kidding aside, Baumgarten defended his club saying that the ad ditions of Tom Paciorek and Steve Kemp should put the Sox near the top of the American League's Western Division. "If we don't win it, we have no one to blame but ourselves," he said. When asked to name the toughest hitters for him to pitch to, Baumgarten singled out Milwaukee's Cecil Cooper, Kansas City's George Brett, and Kemp, formerly of Detroit. John Cox mentioned that the efforts of the Cubs front office should start to take shape on the playing field under new genaral manager Dallas Green. Plaindealer Warrior Grapplers Split McHenry high school's wrestling team split in dual meet action last week defeating Stream wood 37-23 at East Campus, and then bowing at Fox Valley op ponent Dundee 45-12. The Warriors were vic- timid by injuries during the two matches, a factor which coach Marty Sobczak hopes to overcome in time for the conference tournament on February 5 and 6 at Dundee McHenry is also a young team, and despite its misfortunes, has performed admirably under the cir cumstances "With six of 11 wrestlers in the sophomore class, the Warriors are doing a good job of maintaining a varsity level of wrestling," said Sobczak.* "The next two weeks will tell if they are ready for the conference tournament " McHenry will resume conference competition on Friday. The winning Lancers forced the Scots to turn the ball over several times during the early part of the first half and took an early lead Lake County made it obviously clear by halftime who had control of the game with its 70-31 lead McHenry attempted to put itself back into the game cutting the lead to under 40 points. But despite the defensive rebounding of Jim Johnson and the addition of Hick Peterson's 20 second half points, the Scots could only slice the lead down to 25 points. With the game well decided in the second half, all 10 MCC players got into the scoring act Others who scored in double figures were Ron D'Angelo with 15, Dan Conway with 12, and Johnson and Chris Wadlington with 10 each. Tuesday night, MCC suffered another defeat at the hands of Truman College 80-72. The Scots had a 9-point lead near the end of the first quarter and the game at hand when disaster struck. Truman errupted for six straight field goals and took a 33-31 halftime lead. Truman's momentum continued throughout the second half, and MCC was unable to catch up. Peterson and Wadlington were the only Scot players to score in double figures as they netted 24 and 14 points, respectively. Froemming was the life of the party. He shared many of his experiences in his umpiring career dating back to rookie season in 1958. He told of his encounters with Leo Durocher, Billy Martin, and Earl Weaver, and how you can get even with a manager. "You can always get back at them," he em phasized. Froemming told the story of how he settled an argument with Durocher on a close play at first base. "How can call him safe?", Leo inquired. "He on the bag with the foot," Froemming Earl Walsh followed and was greeted to a standing ovation. He immediately came to the defense of his White Sox who had Wen much maligned during-the evening. He had a few things to say about the Cubs too. Previous banquets broke up about 10:30 p.m., but this one seemed destined to go on forever. Finally after all the Harry Carey and Jimmy Piersall jokes had passed, Lloyd dismissed the crowd with the familiar quote "See you next year." Sounds like a Cub saying doesn't it?. Carl Moesche On The Court: McHenry at South Coach Ken Ludwig and his McHenry Warriors will have their work cut out for them Friday when they invade "Gator Alley" to take on Gary Collins' Crystal Lake squad. The Gators finally cracked the top-16 in this week's state poll with their number 16 ranking. After a season opening loss at Lake Zurich, Crystal Lake South has ran off 15 straight wins and is 6-0 in the Fox Valley. McHenry is 2-4 in the conference and 2-10 overall. The Gators are led by conference scoring leader Jeff Mitby who is averaging 19 points per game, along with two other guards Jim Goodwin and Pat Corey. The front line is manned by', the Dayton brothers Tom and Mike, both at 6-2 and the tallest "players on the team. With a well-balanced of fense and a good defense, they will be tough to beat. The Warriors, however, have improved greatly over the "past several wetks, despite a heartbreaking 62- 60 loss against Dundee. In that game Mike Bauml; led McHenry with 18 points.. The Warriors have a tendancy to get behind and then try and play catch up. One of these times they are goiung to put it all together and tonight would be a good time to begin. Hope to see a lot of fans at the game.
