Reilly, Heard Pace Even Year Grads E McHENRY -The Even year graduates defeated the Odd year graduates 68-62 Saturday night at McHenry's annual alumni game. Due to the extreme cold weather, only a small crowd showed up to witness this year's event. But those that did make the effort had the chance to watch McHenry's stars of yesteryear Coach Ken Ludwig would have like to have some of the talent on hand for his current Warriors. Terry '"Radar" Reilly can still pass with the best of them, and hasn't lost his eye for the 20-footers that he swished through the net. Reilly led all scorers with 24 points. Jim Heard at 6-8 would be a welcome sight on the varsity this year with his fine shooting touch and rebounding strength. Heard pumped in 20 points to follow Reilly as the visitors' leading scorers Ken Ludwig (21 points) and Steve Kasperczyk teamed up as guards for the odd year graduates and kept the ball moving on offense. Roger Wanta and Gary Fairchild still can hit the boards. Dave Lawson still plays a steady game, and 1964 grad Don Harris still hasn't lost his touch Gary Snell had a good night with plenty of action underneath with the big boys, and Jim Bacon let fly a 20-footer that hit nothing but net. Bob Zeller, a 1981 grad, still rebounds and shoots well, and 1956 grad "Sweet" Charlie Pierce probably had more fun than the rest of the fellows put together. Charlie still moves up and down the court, although a little slower than the days gone by. Friday night the Tigers clawed the Skyhawks 74-55 as they dominated the boards with their overall superior size. Earlier this season Johnsburg was soundly beaten at Wood stock, again falling victim to the other team's height advantage. Central also won Friday night over Cary Grove to push its overall record to 12- 6. Johnsburg dropped to a 4- 12 overall mark. The Tigers were off and running in the first quarter connecting on 10 of 16 field goal attempts and all four of their free throws for 24 points The Skyhawks, mean while, had all kinds of trouble with the Tigers' 1-3-1 midcourt press and lost the ball several times on bad passes before even getting off a shot. Joe Meyers finally got Johnsburg on the board with a three-point play with 5:30, but his basket and Jeff Fowler's with :43 left would be the only two that the Skyhawks would get in nine attempts in the first quarter Johnsburg connected on five of seven free throws, however, for a total of nine first quarter points. The Gators rushed out to 20-13 first quarter lead and never looked back. The loss dropped the Warriors to 2-5 in the Fox Valley conference and 2-11 overall. The Gators remain in first place in the con ference with an unblemished 7-0 record and stand 16-1 overall. Statistically, McHenry matched up with Crystal Lake in all categories but one - hitting the basket. The Warriors were as cold as the weather outside making just 12 of 48 field goal attempts (25 percent) for a mark far below their season average. The Gators outrebounded the Warriors 29-23, but in the first half the visitors had the better end of it. McHenry hit the offensive boards with authority in the first getting a second and third shot, but the ball just wouldn't drop through. McHenry also cut down on its turnovers committing but 14 in the game, a far cry from last week's 30 miscues. In the early moments of the opening period, Bill Hermann, Mike Bauml, Steve Babb, and Mike Burgdorf kept the Warriors close with field goals, but the Gators then began to pull away behind Jeff Mitby. Mitby, the conference's leading scorer, began to find the range as the Gators pulled out to a 20-13 halftime lead. In the second period, the pressure defense of Crystal Lake took }ts toll on McHenry. Mitby continued his torrid shooting as the Gators outscored the Warriors 17-11 and led 37-24 at intermission. The second half was pure disaster for the Warriors. Plaindealer Unable to get their offense going because of the tenacious Gator defense, the Warriors managed to score but two points in the quarter, their lowest output of the season, and found them selves trailing 51-26 going into the final period. Only Hermann's field goal averted a third quarter shutout. With the Crystal Lake starters now on the bench, Collins showed off his reserves and proved that he does have depth. The Gators outscored the Warriors 11-9 in the fourth quarter and won handily 62-35. McHenry coach Ken Ludwig was obviously disappointed in his team's shooting performance, but felt that the overall floor game had improved drastically over last week. "Our shooting was just plain horrible," he said. "But our floor game was the best this season as we committed only 14 tur novers, and our offensive rebounding in the first half was also our best showing of the year." Mitby and Mike Dayton each finished with 16 points to lead Crystal Lake, while Hermann was the only McHenry player to crack double figures as he finished with 14 points. Credit must be given where it is due. Collins has assembled a fine ballclub, they play good defense, they shoot well, and they play afe a team, something they haven't done in past years. Whether they make waves in the state playoffs remains to be seen. With their tallest player at 6-3, the Gators will have a tough road ahead of them if they meet some of the suburban schools with starters over 6-5. Anyway, a 16-1 record at this time isn't bad for a school that is only four years old. McHenry will return to the friendly confines of Buckner gym on Friday, Jan. 29 when it hosts Cary Grove. Tom Pieper scored seven of his game-high 20 points in (he quarter, but Johnsburg still trailed 36-20 at in termission. The third quarter turned into a run-and-gun affair as the Skyhawks poured in 23 points and the Tigers netted 20. Jeff Bartmann had 10 of his 11 points in the quarter and Meyers added eight for Johnsburg. Hill and reserve forward Lee Stromberg matched Meyers' total for Crystal Lake. • The Tigers opened up a 20- point lead in the fourth quarter when coach Arnie Kay began clearing his bench. The Crystal Lake reserves continued the scoring parade with 18 quarter points to only 12 for Johnsburg to win handily. Hill led a well balanced scoring attack for the Tigers with 14 points, while Teuber and Scott Beck each scored 12 Meyers joined Pieper and Bartmann in double figure scoring for the Skyhawks as he finished with 15 points. Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors lost at Crown 52-31 Thursday night, but rebounded to win an exciting game at Cary Grove 40-39 Saturday night. The Vikings made it 5-0 in the FVC behind Jean Haeger's 24 points. The Crown center, who ranks fifth in the league in scoring with 55 points, scored 20 of those points in the first half as her team began to pull away. McHenry trailed slightly at 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, but was outscored 18-5 in the second period to trail 31-15 at intermission. McHenry trailed 11-2 at the end of the first quarter and 25-11 at intermission. But the fireworks started in the second half. Karen Karpavicius, who netted but two field goals in the first half, got her team going by scoring 11 second half points to tie Crown's Kim Boos for scoring honors with 15 points. The Lady Warriors' center included a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in her performance including the last two of the game. McHenry outscored Cary Grove 15-7 and 14-7 in the final two quarters limiting the Trojans to only four field goals in the second half. McHenry also made nine of 12 free throws in the second half in its comeback. Smith, who led the Lady Warriors in scoring Thur sday, again had a superb game by scoring seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter and also pulling down a team-leading 15 rebounds. Wirtz also got strong support from his bench as Cissy Pinkstaff, Renee Mezzano, and Lynne Pod pora all contributed in the waning moments as starters Karpavicius, Blume, and Robin Geiger all fouled out. Pinkstaff made a pair of free throws with 2:11 remaining which put McHenry on top for good, and Podpora added six key rebounds down the stretch. The Lady Warriors out- scrapped the Trojans as they held a distinct 16-7 ad vantage in recoveries. "Our second half defense is what won the game for us," said Wirtz. "The girls hustled all the way forcing a lot of turnovers and a lot of bad shots." McHenry will play host to conference co-leader Crystal Lake South on Thursday, Jan. 28. Hiller, however, switched from a zone to an aggressive man-to-man defense and sliced the lead to eight points, 37-29, at halftime. After a cold-shooting first half, Don Bentz and Ben Beck brought Hiller back as their team took a seven point lead with five minutes remaining. Hiller main tained a six point lead with 1:30 remaining, but then several missed free throws off a bonus one-and-one allowed Christopher's to catch up.
