The original charter was granted to operate a 22- bedr non-profit hospital, alleviating an acute shor­ tage of hospital beds in northeastern and northcen- tral Illinois. But even with the opening of the facility, the county and neighboring communities were still loohospital^ ,o * adequate for the population at that time. In September of 1957 the hospital began a fund drive for an addition which would include a number of beds designated for use as a maternity depar­ tment. The expansion plans became a reality for the second time through support of the community. Qn July 7, 1960, ground was broken for a new 18- bed addition, and in April of 1961 a dedication ceremony was held. The last ma|or expansion was opened May 21,1966 -- a three-story facility built adjacent to the original hospital. The Next 25 Years | The McHenry Area In Review - V j t Community News. Highlights - January 1st 1981 - December 31, 1981 With a strong foundation on which to build, the comprehensive health care system for this region began to take shape in the minds of those far-- sighted individuals who realized the needs of the future. As it was for the original hospital, the new regional medical center will remain a community responsibility. With ground breaking tentatively scheduled for spring of 1982, the hospital enters into a new age of .Oli^Mility-senfice as a major resource in regional health care. The new center will provide for 180 patient beds and 162,035 square feet of facility situated on a 103.5 acre site. It will feature a seven-story tower, with four floors designated for private and semi-private patient rooms. The Delivery and Intensive Care unit will also be housed in the patient tower. There will be a two-story Diagnostic and Support center which will house the emergency department, respiratory therapy, radiology, surgical suites, recovery rooms, pathology and clinical laboratorif&. pharmacy, medical records and library, ministrative services and the cafeteria. jjfl i ' W V/ ft A
