The Warriors had heaten the Gators earlier at Buckner gym. Bob Greve finished fourth in the Fox Valley in scoring with 230 points and teammate Bob Zeller finished sixth totaling 216 points Both seniors were later selected by the coaches to the All- Fox Valley squad McHenry reached the finals of their own Class AA Regional with a 21-point victory over Rockton Hononegah. 69-48. Greve led the locals with 19 points and Zeller added 16. In the Regional finale, however, the Warriors were upended by Woodstock 59-47 as the locals were outshot from the field 60 percent to 30 percent. Joe Leahy led the Blue Streaks with 18 points. McHenry had beaten Woodstock in both regular season meetings, but the third time it was not to be as four Warrior starters fouled out. Warrior coach Ken Ludwig praised his his team even in defeat saying,"It was a great season and I am very proud of the way the kids played throughout the year. They never quit and always gave me 110 percent." The Johnsburg boys basketball team was also eliminated in the championship game of their Class A Regional. At Harvard, the Skyhawks fell to Richmond-Burton 69-64 despite a gutsy second half performance. .Johnsburg outscored Richmond 46-32 in the second half, but the Skyhawks' surge. was preseeded by a second quarter slump in which they went scoreless for over four minutes. The Rockets tallied 13 points during that same four minute span. Rick Neiss led Johnsburg with 25 points while Tom Pieper, Chuck Novy, and Frank Jakubicek each tallied 12 points. The Skyhawks made it to the finals by beating North Shore Country Day of Winnetka 67-36 and then by topping Marian Central 74-61 in the semi-finals. All WSCC forward Carl Brown led the Hurricanes in their defeat with 18 points while Scott Truckenbrod added 11 points. Neiss, Johnsburg's 6-1 forward, was selected to the first team All-SHARK squad. Coach Bob Kies commented, "Rick deserved ther honor and he erased many school records this year for Johnsburg," Kies said. "I was dissappointed that he was not a unanimous selection though." Other Skyhawks honored were Pieper and Novy who were both selected to the honorable mention squad. McHenry high school's boys swim team ended its season with a 6-9 record. Senior Keith Gregg, who accumulated 136^ points during the season was honored by coach Mike Shanahan as the Most Valuable Swimmer. Sophomore Darren Cepulis was awarded with the Most Improved Swimmer award. Brian Wrona, McHenry's 119 pounder, was awarded Most Valuable Wrestler at the wrestling banquet. The trophy went to the East Campus senior on the basis of voting by his teammates. Wrona finished the season with a 29-2-0 record, a 9-0-1 conference record, and a career mark of 67-20-1. Jim Heard and Terry Reilly each pumped in 27 points as the even years defeated the odd years at McHenry high school's annual alumni basketball game 96-87. The Parkland wrestling team placed eleventh in the junior hiflh school state finals as four wrestlers praced in the top five in their respective weight classes. Brad Snvder placed second ovdfcll at- 155 1 " Marian Central captured the West Suburban Catholic Conference title in girls basketball with a 52-41 win over Benet at Lisle. Both teams had entered the contest tied for first place with identical 10-1 league marks. Jackie Weber led the Hurricanes with 19 points In the Johnsburg Regional, Marian defeated the host Skyhawks 51-40 in the semi-finals to improve its record to 14- 3 Johnsburg ended its season with a 9-5 record In the championship game, Marian defeated Harvard 36-34 as Sandi Kasting scored on a five-foot jumper at the buzzer. Moving to the Hampshire Sectional, the Hurricanes reached the semi-finals where they bowed out 45-35 to Yorkville. Weber again led Marian in scoring with 18 points, while Kasting pulled down 10 rebounds. The Hurricanes ended their year with a 16-4 record, while Yorkville (26-1) moved on to Supersectionals. McHenry's girls basketball team ended a frustrating season in the first round of the Crystal Lake Regional by bowing out to Central 64-49. Trie Lady Warriors were 2-11 in the Fox Valley conference and 4-16 overall. Little John's-Christopher's captured first place in the first year of men's Parks & Recreation basketball by defeating McHenry Sand k Gravel 65- 48. Dan Stanowski's career high 19 points paced the winners who finished with a 9-1 record. Bill Scasney led the league in scoring averaging 32.4 points per game. Brian Wilson succeeded Ken Swanson as head baseball coach at McHenry high school. APRIL April brought out further post season awards for area basketball players and also started new sport seasons in the high schools. At McHenry, senior Bob Greve was given the award of Mr. Basketball after he led the Warriors in both scoring and assists during the 1960-81 season. Another senior John Costigan won two awards, Most Improved Player as well as the team's top free throw shooter making 74.3 percent of his charity tosses. ;. Greve and Costigan were also two of eight local prep cagers selected to the All-McHenry County team. Greve was named to the Class AA first team, while Costigan was selected to the second team A third Warriors player, senior Bob Zeller, was also selected to the Class AA second team. Chosen on the Class A All-McHenry County team were Johnsburg's Rick Neiss (first team), Tom Pieper (second team), and Chuck Novy (honorable mention); and Marian Central's Carl Brown (first team), and Brad Gregory (second team). At the Hurricane's Awards Banquet, Brown was named the team's Most Valuable Player, Gregory was named Top Defensive Player, and Jim Mayer was named the Most Improved Player. At the same banquet, T.J. Bauraan was voted the Most Valuable Player on the wrestling team and Jim Knox ws voted Most Improved. In girls basketball, Jackie Weber was selected Most Valuable Player as well as being the top free throw shooter, and Julie Berna was voted Most Improved. At Johnsburg, Sue Dehn, Inge Dschida, and Cheri Kofler were all selected to the All-SHARK girls basketball team. Dehn, a junior who averaged 13.9 points per conference game, was named to the first team. Dschida, a senior who averaged 11.5 points per game, was named to the second team for the second straight year. Kofler, a junior, was selected as an honorable mention pick after scoring at a 7.8 clip. Dan Boland's McHenry high school track team finished second at the Crystal Lake Central Invitational scoring 94 team points. The host Tigers took first place for the second straight year scoring 127 points. The Warriors shattered two records on the day, however, as Peter Ritthaler won the 50-yard dash in 5.8 seconds and Dave D'Angelo established a new ' standard in the 220 yard dash with a time of 25.0 seconds. 'A McHenry high school's baseball team w^nt 2-6 in April under new coach Brian Wilson In their opening weekend, the Warriors lost 11-4 against Libertyville and 7-6 to Zion-Benton, but were anything but boring to watch. McHenry committed eight errors in the field during the two games, but did manage to keep its opponents off guard by stealing 14 bases. Joe Bauml was the only Warrior to connect safely in both contests. The Warriors were then humiliated 14 0 by Streamwood, before notching their first win of the year. McHenry defeated cross-town rival Johnsburg 11- 2 behind the pitching of junior Dave Smith. McHenry then lost 4-2 to Elgin-Larkin and 9-3 to Elgin in the same afternoon. The Warriors closed out April with a split against Fox Valley conference foe Crystal Lake South winning the first game 5-3, but dropping the nightcap 2-1. Johnsburg's baseball team opened the season in the worst way possible. The Skyhawks were no-hit and shutout in their opener by Crystal Lake South's Dan Gallagher who posted a 9-0 whitewashing. In SHARK conference play, John sburg didn't find matters any $asier as Marengo's brilliant lefthander Stu Stock tossed a 10-0 no-hitter against thenK The Skyhawks, coached by Jim Meyers, ended the month winless in conference play as Hononegah beat thenp 11-7. Marian Central's baseball team lost a 10-8 contest to Crystal Lake South in coach Ken Matthews debut. At the Plaindealer, Jeff Stern suc ceeded Joel Wakitsch as Sports Editor. Wakitsch remained on staff by moving into the advertising department. McHenry's girls softball team dropped a 2-1 game despite Sue Had- dick's one-hitter. The senior righthander struck out 11 batters and issued but three walks in taking a tough loss. Led by Aric Akins' three first place finishes, the McHenry high school track „ team won a triangular meet at Cary Grove. The Warriors of Dan Boland scored 85*2 team points in the meet to defeat the host Trojans with 72 points, and also the Dundee Cardunals who totaled 304. Akins won the shot put, the 100 yard dash and was a member of the first place 400 relay team. Other Warriors that placed first were Steve Carby in the 3200, Roger Quinlan in the triple jump. Jon Peterson in the hurdles, and Pete Ritthaler in the 400 meters. Three first place finishes boosted Johnsburg's track team to a triangular victory. The,Skyhawks scored 68 points in the meet to outpoint Marian Central and Harvard. Jim Hopp won the 100 meters, Ernie Johnson the discus, and John Payne the pole vault for the winning Skyhawks. Johnsburg placed in all but one of the 17 events to win handily. Johnsburg's girls softball team ended the month with a 3-6 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the SHARK conference. In their last game in April, Sue Dehn smashed three hits in four at bats in support" of winning pitcher Dawn Haynie as the Skyhawks thumped Harvard 16-6. The McHenry high school girls badmitten team defeated Lake Forest 4-3 for their fifth win of the season against three losses. MAY Brian Wilson endured a frustrating month of baseball as his McHenry high school team won only three games and finished the season with a 4-10 record in the Fox Valley conference and an overall mark of 5-20. Lack of pitching and an inconsistent hitting attack spelled disaster for the Warriors who fell victim to a no-hit game registered by Crown's Jim Durgan. In probably its best game of the HP mm is Two of the better girl basketball players in the area, Johnsburg's Inge Dschida (42) and Marian Central's Jackie Weber (20) squared off in a Regional game at Johnsburg. Dschida outscored Weber 16-9 in the contest, but the Hurricanes prevailed 51-46. Marian went on to capture the Regional title by topping Harvard, but sw its season end at the Hampshire Sectional where it lost to state-ranked Yorkville in the semi-finals. The Hurricanes finished the season with a 16-4 record as Weber was voted the Most Valuable Player.
