Johnsburg also announced its MVP's and captains in each sport. Wakitsch was also the recipient of the "6ld Timers Club" athletic scholarship award, and Dschida and Valetin were voted as the school's outstanding senior athletes. Also at Johnsburg, basketball coach Bob Kies quit and assumed a similiar position at Quincy-Notre Dame high school. During his stint with the Skyhawks, Kies was 54-29 including a 17-11 record last year. At McHenry high school, pitcher Jeff McNish was selected to the all-Fox Valley conference team. The senior batted .355 during the year. From the Warrior girls softball team, pitcher Sue Haddick and shortstop Karen Kar- pavicius were voted all-conference. McHenry high school athletic trainer Earl "Coop" Cooper retired after serving the school at that position since 1975. At Marian Central's awards banquet, the following athletes were selected most valuable: Scott Truckenbrod, tennis; Darlene Grenier, girls track; Mike Eisele and Paul Sandall, boys track; Steve Wett and Jim Burroughs, baseball; and Joyce Kennebeck, girls softball. At the Plaindealer, Carl Moesche replaced Jeff Stern as Sports Editor. Stern accepted a similiar position with the Burlington Standard Press. McHenry native John Mclnerney won the 7-mile Harvard Milk Run with a time of 37:41. Carrie Mortell of McHenry was the leader of the women's two-mile race with a 12:23 clocking. Six local girls helped the Lake Region YMCA gymnastics team win the Class III State championship. The local 12 to 14 year old girls are Karyn Althoff, Melanie Smith, and Michele Landis of McHenry, and Jennifer Hueman, Sue Russell, and Sabrina Sliwiak of Johnsburg. In men's 12-inch softball, Doherty's remained the top team in the Western Division sporting a 6-0 record. In the Eastern Division, Wayne's and The Fox Hole Tap tied for the league lead with identical 5-1 marks. Wayne's ended the month with a 16-1 drubbing of Hainesville Inn and the Fox Hole also flexed its muscles in clubbing Jewel Park 17-2. At the end of June, the Fox Hole Tap, J and L Oil, and Sport Stop remained undefeated in men's 16-inch softball. Fox Hole and Sport Stop were atop at 6- 0 and J and L was 5-0. In women's 16-inch softball, Ed's Rental remained the class of the Tuesday night league with a 7-0 record. Ed's closed out the month with a 14-3 drubbing over Dr. Frymark. In the Thursday night league, four teams scrambled for a share of the league lead. Oaks Marathon, Brake Parts, St. Regis, and River Shannon all stood at 5-1. McHenry's American Legion baseball team dropped its season opener 8-7 to Algonquin and won only/ three of eight games during June. Manager Russ Williams' crew did wind up the month on a positive note, however. Before leaving to join the United States Marine Corps, Dave Colberg tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters in a 8-0 win over Lake-In-The- Hills. C.J.'s Doll Barn took over first place in McHenry's senior pigtail league by winning its last three garnet to boost its record to 7-2.
