Paul Smith fell on a fumble in the end zone with what proved to be the only Johnsburg points of the month. The Skyhkwks dropped to 0-3 after being shutout by both Grayslake 8-0 and Harvard 19-0. Kathy Bull took over as head volleyball coach at Johnsburg and her team had a slow September with a 3-3 record. The Skyhawks closed out the month losing to SHARK opponent Hononegah in straight sets. Marian Central's football team won its opener in Don Penza's debut 7-6 over St. Edward. In the Hurricanes first possession of the year, quarterback Don Rickert drove his team 72 yards in 14 plays for a score. His touchdown pass to end Scott Spengel and Spengel's extra point kick were the difference in the game. OCTOBER McHenry's football team fell from the unbeaten ranks on the first weekend in October when Woodstock upended Joe Schlender's team 30-16 at Mc- Cracken field. On hand at the game were members of the 1961 Warrior championship team. McHenry defeated Cary Grove the next weekend 18-14, rallying from a 14-0 halftime deficit to win. Quarterback Doug Mullen ran for one touchdown and passed to Mladen Rudman for two more as the Warriors pulled out the win. Rodman's winning touchdown came on a 92-yard bomb. The Warriors ended the month with two losses to put their record at 2-3 in the Fox Valley conference and a 4-3 overall mark. McHenry lost its Homecoming game 21-12 to Dundee as Tom Wagner managed the only scores, and McHenry also was whipped at Crystal Lake Central 42-26 as the conference leading Tigers rolled up 429 yards total offense and Joe Malone scored four touch­ downs. Mladen Rudman rushed for 126 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Warriors. McHenry's cross country team suffered its first loss of the season as Crystal Lake Central edged Bill Hut­ chinson's crew 27-28. But from that point on, the Warriors were un­ stoppable. McHenry avenged its only loss the next weekend by winning the 16-team Crystal Lake Invitational. The Warriors then finished second at the Peoria Invitational which is con­ sidered a prelude to the state meet. Defending state champion Elmhurst York won the race with 47 points, and McHenry totaled 170.
