ARMY RECRUIT Michael Hertel, son of Laurel and Mike Hertel of Lilymoor, is now stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., where he will be getting basic training. Mike enlisted last May with his buddy Lane Baccia. Both left Jan. 14, but are currently stationed in different camps. Mike was the guest of honor at a going away party held at the Moose lodge Jan. 9. Assorted friends and relatives gathered to wish him well and supplied him with the wherewithal for a memorable weekend. The next three years will be important ones for Mike. Young people are needed in the armed services of our country and we appreciate that Mike and others are enlisting. FIRE CALL Five o'clock' in the mor­ ning is ntftime to hear (he horn of your automobile parked in the driveway by your house, sounding off. Mrs. Janice Campbell awoke with a start and seeing the ' smoke from her car, called our local Fire Department Company 3. The fire truck arrived in record time and though the car was totalled, the fire did not reach the house. Mrs. Campbell has only words of praise for the quick response of the firemen. She was particularly concerned about the safety of her home, v « as she had filled the cars' gas tank the previous night. A fireman explained that the full tank probably delayed an explosion, giving the fire fighters time to put the fire out. The quick, positive action of our Company 3 saves a home in our community. EYESURGERY Three residents on Southside in Lilymoor have another common bond. Dick Mumma is the third person on that street to undergo a type of eye surgery. Bob Bartlett and Don Leske were the forerunners. Dick had a pterygium removed from his eye. A few complications prevented his returning to work as soon as he had anticipated. After days at home under the watchful care of Cheryl and the children, he is ready to return to work. Dick discovered that his condition was usually associated with blacks from the south according to one doctor, and with Indians or persons who work out in the fields, according to another. Very interesting, even though he does not fit either category. Want a third opinion, Dick? ANOTHER SOUTHSIDE SURGERY The removal of tonsils was the reason Robert Gurske was hospitalized this past week. Last Thursday found him back home and very hungry. Robert discovered that hunger and ability to eat do not necessarily go together, when the good mashed potatoes and chicken made by mother Mitzi wouldn't go down. By now Robert should be feeling much better and no longer suffering from hunger. SPECIAL DAYS Birthdays this week in­ clude E. Robert Betancourt on Feb. 4 and Ken Pahlke on the 5th. Becky Mieszala,' pretty daughter of Barb and Phil, has her day on the 8th. Virginia Nixon celebrates on the 9th. Anniversary wishes go to two couples who were married on Feb. 8, Mr. and Mrs. Kraczyk and Jerry and Shertill Weber, who will be having their sixteenth an­ niversary. VALENTINE DINNER DANCE Laurie Hertel extends an invitation to the annual dinner and dance to be held at the Moose lodge Feb. 13. Call Laurie for information and tickets for an enjoyable evening out for a worthy cause. DOGS IN LAKEMOOR Private yards are meant to be used only by the residents and pets of that yard. Andy Kowal's yard is the mecca for Tippy the dog, and Shadow the duck. Shadow is true to his hame as he follows Andy wherever he goes in the yard. He pecks on the door for his master to hurry and come out and won't stop until he does. The pets and Andy are disturbed when other dogs use their yard. Courtesy says we should all try to keep our pfets in our own yards. PENNSYLVANIA VISITORS Dick and Cheryl Mumma had a welcome houseful the weekend of the 23rd - one of the bad weather ones. Dick's mother and father, grand­ mother, sister Ruth and nephew Wayne, drove in from Pennsylvania. Room was made for everyone by shifting locations, with even the dog being put away in a bedroom. Cherrie took the adult members shopping in the cold and snow of the 23rd, but a little weather did not stop pleasure. Gramma was concerned about Dick's surgery, as she too has eye problems. For Tracking Animals A free indoor and outdoor program on tracking animals in winter will be open to the public at Glacial park Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. McHenry County Conservation district volunteers, Maggie Jung and Cris and Paul Rechten, will use photographic slides indoors and snow tracks outside to help teach tracking.
