C. Bush school. All the troops were encouraged to display dif­ ferent nationalities at the booths. Crafts, food, and games from several coun­ tries were represented. Pictured above are two of our local girls who par­ ticipated in this event. It was quite an experience for the girls from the 27 troops from Johnsburg, Wonder Lake, McHenry, Richmond and Spring Grove. These same troops will be out taking cookie orders started Feb. 5. Please give them your support when they come to your door. CUBSCOUT NEWS Pack 454 held its Pinewood Derby Jan. 29 and following is the results of that race. In ihe eight-year-old class, Shawn Kelly won first place; Steve Domski, second; Josh Saunders, third; and Nathan Lee, fourth. The nine-year-old winners are Jeff Adams, first; Keith Pomonis, second; Mark Berlin, third; and Ray Klotz, fourth. The ten-year-old winners are Jason Mum ford, first; Keith Lehman, second; Jeff Steffans, third; and David Wetzstein, fourth. Bryan Smith won fastest in the pack for the third con­ secutive year. Ribbons were also given out for best design and in this category the following boys won: eight-year-old, Tony Sciarroni; nine-year-old, Mark Berlin; 10-year-old, Jeff Steffans. Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to you who take your cars to Rock- ford in March. The pack also had a meeting last month in which several awards were given to [the following boys: John Briggs, Tommy Smith and Brian DeBates were taken up into Webeloes. Josh Saunders received his Bobcat; Paul Jargstorf, Steve Domski, Tim Fortin were called up for their Wolf badge. Brian Marks received one silver arrow under his wolf. Jan. 30, the pack par­ ticipated in the Crystal Lake Winter Carnival parade and the boys looked just great, marching with their group. Beach Gals Plan Events The Beach Gals monthly meeting was held Wed­ nesday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the beach house. Thirteen ladies were in attendance to discuss such matters as the Easter carnival. A com­ mittee was planned for that big event. At the club's May meeting, a family services speaker will be present to discuss parenting and stress management. The ladies enjoyed playing many games. Helen Nash made many beautiful homemade items and handed them out to all the girls. It was also Helen's turn for refreshments, which were tarts and candy. THIRD GRANDSON Henry and Mary Ann Tapaninen welcomed their third grandson, Jason Henry, born to their daughter Mary and her husband Bill Mueller. Jason was born Jan. 29, weighing in at 7 lbs. 9 oz. and measuring 19Vfe inches long. He was welcomed home by big brothers Marshall, age four and Brandon, age one and a half. Jason's paternal grand- parents are Bill and June Mueller. Congratulations to the proud parents and grandparents on this new life. BRIDAL SHOWER A lovely bridal shower for Joy Hegg was hosted by close friends, sisters and mom Florence on Sunday, Jan. 31. Joy will wed Norm Eichmann Feb. 27. It was a beautiful shower, decorated with white and burgundy throughout the home of Joy's sister, Nancy Harwell. After a hot buffet, everyone left with a long stem silk rose from the centerpiece. Young patrons at McHenry Public library may now look forward to a number of new books, records and learning resource materials as the result of a recently an­ nounced State of Illinois grant of $5,214.21. According to Library board president, Janice Wegener, when the monies are received orders will be placed for needed additions to the Children's room collection for which the funds are earmarked. Librarian June Stuart explained that when ap­ plying for this particular grant, it was necessary to designate a specific need in the area of lending materials. The Children's room has enjoyed an in­ creasing demand for recreational and research reading materials as well as records. Therefore, the grant application sought to meet this need. It will be a few months before the^new materials will b^ofTthe shelves. In the meantime, new books, as well as records and films for all areas of the library, are being processed and shelved on a regular basis. Recent library use has been heavy despite the severe weather and probably because of it, according to Ms. Stuart. "Reading a good book or listening to favorite music is an excellent way to weather a storm or cold spell, " she added. She noted that libraries provide free ser­ vices when other recreational and cultural activities must be curtailed due to a tightening economy. She also emphasized that best sellers are in great demand at the library, and, while at least one copy of most best sellers is acquired, these are the books most likely to be out on loan. However, a patron may request that his name be placed on a waiting list to be notified when a particular book is available. Patrons are also encouraged to ask for help in locating books or finding information. The Library board welcomes donations of used books with the un­ derstanding that some donations may be sold at a nominal fee. Library books are also appropriate memorials to book-loving friends or relatives. McHenry Public library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is nothing sweeter than youth, nor anything as truthful.
