'A good Butcher' was the title. "We had Paddy Frett - A- One-Top man in the profession. He needed to give his place to no one. He not only carved like an ar tist. he took care of his customers' bodies and souls. "He refused to sell me pork hocks on an Ash Wednesday because it was a fast day. "Such memories must, indeed, be allowed to linger. "K. Brown "4016 Kane "McHenry. 111." Dear K: How well I can appreciate your pork hocks story. One time Alvina sent me to the store to buy some beef and I came home with pork. Had to explain that Paddy didn't have a good cut of what I ordered so wouldn't sell it to me. When I protested with "that's what she ordered", he just shook his head and wrapped up the pork. When God made Paddy, He threw the pattern away. S.I.H. The old time meat markets often had a barrel of dill pickles set out where customers could take a sample. Am told people still go to a hardware store trying to describe what they want as a thing-a-ma-jig or what-cha- ma-call-it. Another tempting sample Still thinking back. How well I remember Irene Frisby (Mrs. Walter Warner), a pretty and loveable clerk in my Uncle Mike's store. If you had a penny, you could buy five large, mellow caramels. It was typical of Irene to drop in an extra one for good meastve. Besides having a good heart, she wanted a kid to get his money's worth. Can never forget Bertha Jager in much later years. We used to buy a dozen sweet rolls in those days and, when opening the bag, found a big doughnut on top. Bertha knew I had a weakness for those doughnuts. The old time hardware man would weigh out a pound of nails for you and, when the scales tipped, drop in a couple of extra for good measure. Sometimes a man would be working on a project at home and need one smaB screw or nut to finish the job. When the customer asked the cost, the hardware man raised up his hand--no charge lunch aa the bar, hard boiled eggs and more. Buy a big stein of beer for a nickel and pitch in to the lunch. When you bought a suit of clothes, a necktie or belt were thrown in as a gift Memories, memories-- days of long ago. After taking a milk con tainer down to the Ben Adams small farm for some time, Mrs. Adams gave two pennies back to me one time from the purchase of milk for eight cents a quart. That was a thrill. That milk was straight from the cow. Hadn't heard of pastenizing. The Ben and Sue Adams place was located at the south end of Fourth St., south of John St. There was a small pond on the Adams land where kids used to go ice skating. If a family had only one pair of strap-on skates, a kid Here comes the mailman Now, look at tMsl A postcard from Lorraine and Joe Gausden with Lawrence Welk's picture (full fashion) on the face of the card. Sometimes a sweet voice can turn a man around. This time I wasn't in the mood. Uncharacteristically, I ignored the approach and asked if she was calling for a donation. She was. 'Twas a short conversation and my better half didn't think I was very nice. I think our long tune friend "Schmaltz" MUler is celebrating a birthday as this goes to press.
