The Jablonski boys are tossing a football around near4 their home on Court St. A young boy on Broad St. got out his baseball bat, lining chunks of snow as a ball. *--and what do you know! The birds are getting flut- tery and singing tunes never heard during the winter. ALONG THE TRAIL: People are saying, "Why don't they make business places clean the ice and snow from the sidewalks" I 'm sure "they" would if the law was on their side A couple of people who fell on the ice have stronger words. Maybe a sugar-coated appeal might help. Maybe not. Further along the trail, I heard a discussion on the Boone Creek drudging project. Opinion was that the project was to promote Green St. business Boat owners could come in to do their shopping. Had to say that I heard a State of Illinois official say no financial assistance would be coming except for recreational purposes. All I know is what I hear. Now. here's a smart shopper. "Smitty The Barber" walked into a supermarket, planked himself down on a chair and waited for his wife, Florence, to load up the basket. That is the way I shop in those big shopping centers. I ambled along the other day, looked at one item, then decided to buy it at home. Saw a Valentine Day dress displayed that didn't look like it would cover much more territory than a swim suit. Found a bench with a backrest. The other kind kill me. i . 1 read for a while, then started people watching. Babies aren't out of style. Mothers decided they carried them long enough so put the little darlings in carts. Here's a young gal with heels much too high for her to navigate. She's waddling all over the place. Here's another waddler. This little one has just learned to walk. Mother must have put three diapers on the poor kid. Again we see crowds of shoppers, but few packages. Met Amy Lamphere and her Aunt Harriet, McHenryites of long ago. Good neighbors and good friends. We could have talked all day. Amy and I recalled a story I probably have told a few hundred times. When Amy's mother was going to entertain the Ladies Aid group of the Methodist Church, my mother would help her get the house ready. Mrs. Lamphere wasted no time in getting around to help my mother when it was time to entertain the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Patrick's Church. They never heard of ecumenism, but practiced it. We also met the Vernon Freunds and their grandson. They live in Elgin, but are really McHenryites, having built the beautiful home now owned by Ray and Betty Smith. Mrs. Larry Nimsgern came along and said she would report to Alvina that I was still awake. W h i l e p e o p l e w a t c h i n g , you can tell the married couples from the singles. Seldom see the married ones strolling along with arms around each other. We liked Musin' and Meanderin's column on how the powers that be have changed the dates for ob serving such days as Washington's birthday Just let our legislators try to change St. Patrick's Day and watch the bricks fly. A f r i e n d q u e s t i o n e d , "Didn't you say the West McHenry State Bank started in the Brefeld building on Main Street?" Yep. That's what I said. For those of you who wouldn't know, this is a brick building, the second one west of Front St. where you see a big sign on the wall McHenry Printing". When the bank first opened, Julia Stoffel < Reihansperger) was the only teller. As a boy, I took my bank book and small deposits in to see this honey of a lady. I was sure she must have been sesnt here from heaven. What's more, this great lady gave me 3 percent in terest on my money. That was nothing to sneeze at-- More fun than you could shake a stick at as we acted as taster (small sips, you know) of three different after dinner drinks. It happened at White Sox Headquarters. Not really a blindfold test, but a certain Irish drink was head and shoulders above the others. Pooler, a faculty member at Marian, speaks to freshman and sophomore classes during observance of National Catholic Education week at Marian. Marian Central Catholic high school of Woodstock observed National Catholic Education week with three programs. The Student Council, under the liturgical direction of Ms. Virginia Pharr, and with the musical assistance of Sister Roselyn and Rich Mikus, planned and celebrated an all-school liturgy one day. Father Jim Tranel, faculty member and associate pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Woodstock, was the celebrant. As the faculty advisor to the Student Council, Mike Rattle coordinated the council's activities Another day, Father Stephen K. Potter, associate pastor of St. Margaret Mary parish in Algonquin and a faculty member at Marian, spoke to the freshman and sophomore classes in an address entitled, "Why Here?" He challenged the students to define their commitment to Catholic education and to identify their role in its continuance. On the same day, Sister Barbaralie Stiefermann, director of Spiritual Enrich ment Programs at Northern Illinois university Newman center, presented a slide program to the junior and senior classes. She spoke to the students about faith participation after high school, particularly at the college level . through Newman club association. The programs by Sister Barbaralie Stiefermann and Father Potter were spon sored by the Marian English department, under the direction of Mrs. Judith Sowinski and with the assistance of department member, Mrs. Darlene Gorski. IN THE HOSPITAL Seven-year-old Shawn Darnick is still in intensive care, but is looking forward to being moved to his own room soon, after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. All his classmates and friends at Greenwood school are anxious for Shawn to get well quickly because they miss him. MID-WINTER BLAHS It seems like everyone you talk to lately has the same reaction to our winter - bah kids coming in with more snow inside their boots than they could possibly have stepped on. There does seem to be a bright spot in our future though. The weathermen are finally mentioning highs around 40; ads are ap pearing for lawn mowers; and the mailman has started delivering seed catalogs. Now those have to be good signs. * After spending so much time shoveling, won't it be nice to get out in the sun and weed the flowers, at least the first couple of times? SPECIAL DAYS Happy birthday to Kim Gunty, daughter of Mike and Denise Gunty of Wonder Woods, on Feb. 23. This little Strawberry Shortcake fan will be blowing out seven candles on her birthday cake. Also on Feb. 23, one of my favorite fourth graders, WOMAN'S CLUB The Feb. 18 meeting of the Woman's club of Wonder Lake is one that all club members look forward to, because it is the annual potluck dinner.
