STAFF PHOTOS -- CARL MOESCHE Gators Win District Meet WOODSTOCK - Having won the Fox Valley con­ ference wrestling cham­ pionship two weeks ago, Crystal Lake South turned in another winning per­ formance this past weekend at the Woodstock Class AA District. The Gators qualified seven wrestlers for Sectional competition to be held next weekend at Palatine and topped the eight team field by scoring 126 points to win the District Crown also qualified seven wrestlers and finished second in the competition with 116 points, while the host Blue Streaks qualified six wrestlers and took third place with 93 points. McHenry placed three wrestlers into Sectional competition and finished seventh overall scoring 404 team points Senior Eric Karpinski led the way with a first place finish in the 98 pound weight class. McHenry's other two qualifiers were sophomore Steve Carby (105) and junior Dan Clark (155) who both won Iheir consolation championship matches. This season marked the first time that the top three wrestlers in each weight class earned the right to advance to Sectionals Previously only the top two finishers would qulify The most wrestlers McHenry' ever qualified under the guidance of seven- year coach Marty Sobczak was four, but this year although the Warriors had a disappointing regular season, they only ranked one below that when Rick Connor lost his 112 third place match. By weight class, here are the results of the McHenry wrestlers and the remaining qualifiers to Sectionals: 98 lbs No one can say that Eric Karpinski (McH) didn't earn his trip to Sectionals. While entering the competition with a modest 6-5 record, the senior Warrior defeated the top three wrestlers in his weight class to earn a trip to Palatine Karpinski opened with a 2- 1 decision over top seed Sam Carrozza of Crown, he then defeated FVC champion Tim Quinn of Jacobs 5-1, and in the championship bout, he decisioned Woodstock's Todd Borchardt 7-2 in overtime. Also, during Sobczak's seven years at the helm of the Warrior wrestling program, Karpinski became the first senior since Ken Scalian to qualify to Sec­ tionals from that low a weight class. 105 lbs Steve Carby (McH) opened with a 7-2 decision over South's Bill Beruth, but then dropped into the con­ solation bracket when he lost 6-5 in overtime to top seed Scott Feeney of Central. Carby then received a bye before decisioning Wood­ stock's Darrell Borta &-6 for third place. The Warrior sophomore also raised his record to 16-6 with the vic­ tory. Jon Ledford of Crown decisioned Feeney for the title. 112 lbs Rick Connor (McH) opened with a pin against South's Jim Dustimer, then lost 10-0 to number one seed Dan Calkins of Cary Grove. After a consolation bye, Connor was easily defeated in the battle for third place by Woodstock's Bill Rich by a score of 12-0. Connor ended the year with a record of 14- 13-1 119 lbs McHenry had no entry at this weight class. Crown's top seed Mike Mares ran his record to 18-0 by decisioning Dan Celske for the title. 126 lbs Bob Sarabia' (McH) was decisioned by South's Ken Loving 18-3 in his opening bout to drop him into the consolation bracket. Sarabia then lost to Jacobs' Tom Lietza 13-1 to end his season with a 4-16 record. McHENRY OPTICIANS 132 lbs Mike Love (McH) was decisioned 9-6 by Joe Jestus of Central to end his season with a 10-14 record. Top seed Don Wallace of South remained undefeated in 32 matches with a pin against Woodstock's Rich Drabek in the finale. 138 lbs Scott Schmidt (McH) was also eliminated after his opening rout. Central's Mike Stanley decisioned Schmidt 6-3 to end his record at 17-8. Todd Patton of Woodstock pulled the upset of the District when he decisioned previously unbeaten Scott Toepfer (CLS) 9-8. 145 lbs Mike Connor (McH) lost his opening bout to Crown's Bob Skillman 14-1, then was eliminated by Woodstock's Frank Vadnais 4-2 in con­ solation action. Connor "• ended the year with a 3-7 record. Top seeded Keith Gengler of South defeated Skillman 11-6 for the title, while Dan Martensen of Jacobs decisioned Vadnais 9-4 for third place. 155 lbs Dan Clark (McH) defeated Central's Sean Essex 13-3, then lost to eventual champion Steve Schrey of South by fall. After a con­ solation bye, Clark then pinned Woodstock's Rick Moore in :32 for third place. The Warrior junior is now 21- 11. 187 lbs McHenry had no entry at 167 due to an injury to John Clewis. Tony Halda of Woodstock decsioned Jacobs' Rob Stark 10-5 for the title. 185 lbs Tom Kucek (McH) was decisioned by Cary Grove's Dave Helmer 11-1, then lost a 7-4 decision to South's John Getting in the consolation bracket. Kucek ended the year with a 4-11 record. Top seed Bruce Hanson of Crown topped Helmer 9-1 for the title, while bob Halter of Central won over Getting in overtime 11-5. Heavyweight Jeff Greany (McH) failed to make weight. Top seed Rocky Krzywicki of Crown pinned Bill Kastning of South for the title. W E D 8 3 0 1 McHENRY -- The Warriors of Ken Ludwig had another loot weekend as they dropped a pair of basketball games to Crown 61-55 and to Libertyville 73-37. The losses left McHenry 3- 9 in the Fox Valley con­ ference and 3-16 overall with three games remaining on the regular season schedule. Friday, night, the Warriors startle,,slowly as Mike Burgdorf s basket at the 5:45 ma^k put them ahead for the first lime 4-2. Then the' Warriors broke loose as the Warriors of the past. Good rebounding, ex­ cellent passing, and the hot hand of junior guard Gary Freund (who had five of sue in the period) propelled McHenry to a 22-14 bulge at the end of the first period. The gym was a buzz of the fine Warrior play during the first eight minutes. Both teams missed numerous shots in the early stages of the second quarter. Steve Babb's basket at 5:45 put McHenry ahead 24-16, but then the Vikings' Jim Hinkle began to peck away at the Warrior lead. Crown then knotted the game with 2:00 remaining. Freund countered with another 15-footer to put McHenry up 26-24, but then Crown regrouped for five, unanswered points, and only another Freund score in the closing seconds brought the Warriors to within one at 29- 28. In the opening seconds of the third period, Babb put McHenry ahead 30-29, and x after several lead changes, Burgdorf scored on an un- '• contested layup, Babb V scored again, and the locals were ahead 38-35. Crown came back, however, regained the momentum and ran off seven unanswered points for a 42-38 lead. The Vikings continued to hold the upper hajid and led 48-45 with one period left to play. In the final period, Freund's basket at 4:30 gave the Warriors what would prove to be their last lead of the evening at 53-52. Bad shot selection by the Warriors gave the Vikings an opportunity which they took advantage of, and they sped off to a 61-55 victory. The win was Crown's second straight in the FVC after losing its first 10. The Viking defeated Crystal Lake Central 48-45 on Tuesday. Coach Ludwig was bitterly dissappointed in the loss to Crown saying that 'poor rebounding and very poor shot selection, especially in the closing minutes led to defeat'. We concur that the Warriors should have showed more patience with their offense in the last four minutes of the game. McHenry showed marked improvement in its overall floor game, however, as it committed..only 14 tur­ novers, a far cry from the 33 of the last two games. Freund, in his finest game as a Warrior, led all scorers with 23 points. CATS TOO POWERFUL Saturday night, the highly talented Libertyville Wildcats of Max Sanders just showed too much talent for the young Warriors as they easily defeated the locals 73-37, with the Cat regulars playing less than half of the game. Using the height of 6-10 Rich Stanfel and 6-6 Jim Popp, the Warriors were no match for the visitors as they sped out to £ 20-8 first period lead. Midway through the second period after suc­ cessive dunks by Stanfel and Popp, coac$i Sanders went to the bench, but that didn't stop the Cats as they leaped out to a 48-16 halftime ad­ vantage. At the 3:30 mark in the third period with Liber­ tyville in complete com­ mand, Sanders again went to his bench giving his regulars the rest of the evening off. The Warriors trailed 65-23 going into the final period. The Warriors outscored the Cat reservers 14-8 in the final period, but still came out on the very short end of a 73-37 defeat. It was just a case of a mismatch between the two teams. The Cats are by far the biggest team the Warriors will face this season, or probably is seasons to come. Libertyville has good outside shooting, excellent rebounding, and they block a lot of shots, especially Stanfel. Popp, who led all scorers with 23 points, signed a letter of intent last week to play tight end at Vanderbilt University. He moves well for a big fellow, as does Stanfel. For you fans who missed the game, you missed seeing a fine basketball team. Coach Sanders has to be complimented on his con­ duct, as he told me before the game, "I know the Warriors are small and have not been having a good season. But you can be sure that we will not run up the score on my good friend Ken Ludwig." And that he didn't do as he went to the bench early. And I know that Warrior fans as well as Ken Ludwig- . ap­ preciated that gesture oft the part of coach Sanders. r Friday night the Warriors trevel to Dundee (or a rematch with the Cardunals, then on Saturday the Warriors will face an old rival from the good old days with the ' Zion > Benton ZeeBees of Phil Judson.
