When the over40 group was growing up, not much was known about what constituted a good (Bet And there is still a lot of misin formation being printed about nutrition, particularly that which is distributed by food faddists. Many have no way of whether this material is factual If a book promises a per son more vigor and more healthy years of life, the reader may want to try the nunanJIi n .1 -Si A _• ili.t_n.ti. Mtlilkf prescnoea am wnicn nugni not be suitable and possibly even harmful. .̂Another factor in the choosing of foods by or for the elderly is loss of teeth or poor fitting dentures. People without any teeth at all can eat quite a variety of foods if they know the basics of good nutrition. A third problem, which eventually happens to all of us, is dulling of the senses of smell and taste. The smell of good food can make you want to eat it, but older persons who have lost much of their sense of smell don't have this stimulus. And, to many people, all foods taste alike. Many older people avoid some foods because "it doesn't sit well on my stomach." And they're right, for as we age, there is a reduction in digestive fluids in the stomach. This can lead to slower digestion of food, and often poor tolerance of fats, such as cream, gravy, fat meats and hied foods. Another problem many elderly people encounter, especially if they are living alone, is the lack of interest in preparing nutritious They rely more and convenience or foods, and many of toe foods in this group are high in car bohydrates, especially sugars. Unfortunately, some older people - and a lot of young ones, too - believe that a multivitamin pill will balance their diets and provide for all their nutrition needs, but this is a false notion. Supplemental vitamins should be taken only when prescribed by a physician. Many older people suffer from malnutrition because they don't take advantage of services in their community. The local health department is a good source of in formation. So are senior citizen's centers and the Visiting Nurse association, i The local health depart ment's nutritionist can advise you on planning menus and buying foods that have the nutrients you need. In this community there is a Meals on Wheels program. This program furnishes a hot meal brought to the homebound <mce a day. The local health department can help you apply for the Food Stamp program if you are eligible. There is also the Nutrition program of the Older Americans act which provides hot meals in many Illinois communities, once a day, five days a week, for anyone more than SO years old and their spouses. You can contribute to this on a voluntary basis, depending on what you feel you can afford. The trouble with life today is that there're too many people who recom-' mend themselves too highly. • • • • Moralists, bent on sav ing the world, always want to tell other people what to think and what to do.
