The McHenry County Association for the Retarded (Pioneer center) has an­ nounced plans for* a February campaign to promote public awareness of the fact that 50 percent of mental retardation can be p r e v e n t e d . G o v e r n o r T h o m p s o n e a r l i e r , proclaimed February, 1982 as Prevention of Mental Retardation Month in Illinois. Carol Weisbruch, Com­ munity Education and Prevention coordinator, stated: "Mental retardation is a significant health and eudcation problem affecting an estimated three to Ave percent of the population. By applying existing knowledge about health, education and safety, however, we can reduce the incidence of mental retardation." Working cooperatively with the statewide Association for Retarded Citizens of Illinois, McHenry County Association for the Retarded has developed a wide range of prevention activities. In February, McHenry County Association for the Retarded will place billboards featuring the prevention message, provide speakers (at no cost) to community organizations. "Child Safety-Prevention of Injury", "Mental Retar­ d a t i o n - c a u s e s a n d P r e v e n t i o n " a n d "Nutrition" are some of the topics which speakers from Pioneer center are prepared to present.
