4 PAGE I - PLA1NDEALER • FRIDAY. FEBRUARY It. lftZ Woodstock Crushes Cross-Town Rival Marian Central 89-61 WOODSTOCK -- Woodstock's Blue Streaks may be the No. 2 basketball team in its conference, but there's no question who's No. 1 in town. The Blue Streaks bulled past Marian Central 26-11 in the first quarter and never looked back as they blasted the cross- town Hurricanes 86-61 in a Tuesday non-conference match. "They're good, they're physical, they run real well, and they run then- defenses real well," said Marian coach Hans Rokus. Woodstock looked like it could do no wrong, scoring virtually at will and in different ways while keeping the Hurricanes from penetrating inside. "We played the kind of game we wanted to. We played loose," said Streak coack Jack Renkens. "We let them (his players; shoot outside more tonight. Against South we were tentative. I told them if you think you have a shot, takp it" All the Hurricanes could depend on was their outside shooting. "We couldn't go inside. Their zone was tough inside arittthey were much more physical," Rokus said "We wanted to go zone with them and make them go outside," he went on. But it didn't work so the Hurricanes switched to a man-to-man defense and occasionally used a press "They went right through our press," he said. "We got too far in the hole. It's pretty hard to play catch-up with a team like that," Rokus said. 'I wish Jack 1 Renkens) and the team well. I hope they go a long way and I wish them the best." Rokus added. The Blue Streaks came out strong in the first period, leading 13-3 as the four minute mark approached. After Scott Spengel cut it to 15-5 with 3:16 remaining, Woodstock rattled off nine straight points to claim a 24-5 lead with 1:50. A Mark Rigby-Bill Firnbach combination worked particularly well in that stretch, Rigby stole the ball twice and passed it to Firnbach for scores Marian then outpointed Woodstock 6-2 in the last 1:06 to reduce the Streak margin to 26-11. Woodstock suffered a slight letdown early in the second period After Firnbach scored on a lay up after the opening tip, the Hurricanes outscored the hosts 8-3, cutting the lead to 31- 19 with 5 40 left in the half. A minute later, a Chuck Hartlieb jumper sliced the Streak lead to 33-23 Woodstock's Jerry DeYYane «50» escapes from Marian Central's Dave Rickert (23) and scores an easy bucket in Tuesday night's inter-city rivalry. DeYYane scored 14 points and dominated the Inside game as Woodstock rolled to an 89- 61 win. - v ST AFF PHOTO -- CARL MOESCHE, But Woodstock replied with seven straight points, takhic a 40-23 lead with about 3:25 left and eventually rolling to a lt- point 50-32 margin. In the third quarter, Woodstock opened 19 a 24-point, 60-36 lead, H»lpi«lalniyhy«hr pnii<«frmHwliyi(j WDO taffied On a feed from Todd Burns, scored another on a rebound, and canned a short jumper. By the end of the third quarter, the Streaks led 6*43. Substitutes saw plenty of action in the final quarter as the Streaks outscored the Hwricanes 20-16. The final Woodstock point was scored by Bob Madsen. It was his first varsity point of the season and it brought the crowd to its feet. Firnbach paced the Streaks with 26 points. Jamie Ericksen added 15, while Jerry DeWane had 14, and Rigby 12. "We got too for in the hole. It's pret ty hard to play catch-up with a team like that (Woodstock).9' Marian Coach Hans Rokus Scott Truck en brod led the Hurricanes with 16 points, while Hartlieb had 10 and Spengel added nine. Woodstock was 37 of 73 from the field for 50.6 percent, while Mariah hit 23 of 60 for 38.3 percent. The Hurricanes did better at the free throw line, however, tallying 15 of 25 attempts for 60 percent, while the Streaks were 15 of 26 for 53.5 percent. The Streaks unofficially had 38 rebounds to the Hurricanes' 32. Both teams will face conference games Friday. Woodstock, now 17-3, travels to Cary Grove Friday for a Fox Valley match, while Marian, now 11-9 closes out the regular season at Marengo. March also felt that the season went pretty much as he had anticipated as the Skyhawks did manage a better than .500 record. "I couldn't have designed a better realistic outcome for us this season," he ad ded "We still know where we are in comparison toother schools such as Grant and Harvard, but we feel we have gained a tremendous amount of skill, and we are basically a young team which should be a plus for our future." With an 8-6 mark, the wrestling team is also the only Johnsburg varsity team to have a winning record this year Carl Moesche D Last SHARK Contests Tonight 12-Inch Softball Meeting A manager's meeting will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21 for those involved in Men's Parks & Recreation 12-inch Softball. The meeting is scheduled between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Rusty Nail Inn in Ringwood. All managers are encouraged to attend. Both Johnsburg and Marian Central will play their last SHARK conference games on the road tonight before preparing for Regional play which begins Monday. Johnsburg travels to Rockton to seek revenge against Hononegah and also to decide who will be the conference's last place team. Both teams stand 2-5 in league play after the Indians won the first meeting 78-70 at Johnsburg on Saturday. The loss was also the Skyhawks' fifth straight and dropped their overall record to 6-17. The Indians are 9-9 overall. First-year coach Ben Beck is expected to open with a starting lineup of Jeff Bartmann at center, Joe Meyers and Tom Pieper at the forward spots, and Terry Boyer and Jeff Fowler in the backcourt. Despite a sore ankle, Bartmann scored 24 points in the first game with Hononegah to lead all scorers. He and Pieper have consistently been the one- two punce in the Johnsburg offense, as either one or the other has emerged as the leading scorer in the last 12 games. The Skyhawks' task will be a tougher one as they are playing their finale on the road. Johnsburg has only won twice in 14 games on visiting courts.
