Independent woman "This was the best film-making experience I ever had," says director Michael Roemer about "PilQrim, Farewell," to be broadcast on PBS's "American Playhouse," Tuesday, March 23 (check local listings). His 1964 production, "Nothing But a Man," was hailed as the first feature film to express the nature of the changing black experience. His 1977 documentary, "Dying," was a poignant look at how three families adjust to the death of a loved one. With "Pilgrim, Farewell," Roemer has turned his attention to the changing state of women. "Women today, especially in America, have become fierce ly independent and self-reliant," the German-born filmmaker says. • Roemer created a leading character, Kate (Elizabeth Huddle), who is imbued with those traits. Says Roemer, "Kate is a woman who has never permitted people to depend on her and who has never permitted herself to depend on anyone else. One consequence is that she has completely denied her maternal functions." Roemer's heroine has another problem: She is dying of cancer. But the filmmaker does not think the play is similar to his previous documentary about death. "The fact that I had all this knowledge about how people die and how those around them are affected by the situation did help me create conflicts in the scripts. But I used Kate's illness merely as a permissible dramatic way for her to reveal those emotions and contradictions in her character." © 1982 Computog
