PAGE 7 - PLAINDLALEH WEDKISSAY. .W.i'.-L ii xm Foresters Cage Tourney Concludes Johnsburg Honors Winter Athletes McHENRY - The 88th annual Catholic Order of Pollsters' basketball tournament concluded Sunday after three weekends of play at McHenry Junior high school. Thirty-three teams competed in the annual t o u r n a m e n t w i t h representatives from McHenry, Johnsburg, Chicago, Aurora, and Moline all participating. Johnsburg teams fared the best winning championships in four of the six divisions. The following are the tournament results and the All Stars selected from each division: Junior Division (6th and under) Johnsburg defeated McHenry n 18-11 for the championship. The winners allowed McHenry only one point in the entire first half and cruised to victory. Tom Oeffling led John sburg with 11 points, while Chris Schmitt had eight points for McHenry. McHenry II advanced to the finals after beating McHenry 117-7 earlier. After a close 6-5 halftime contest, McHenry II allowed only a second half field goal to win handily. All Stars from the division included Chris Diedrich and Oeffling from Johnsburg, and Mike Hetterman, Steve Johnson, and Schmitt from McHenry. Junior Division (8th and under) McHenry I captured the title by sweeping past two opponents including McHenry n 55-13 in the championship game. In that game, McHenry I led 14-2 at the end of one and 27-4 at halftime and never looked back. Joe Tonyan pumped in 24 points to lead the winners. Tonyan also led all scorers in in McHenry I's first victory, an easy 56-22 beating of McHenry in. The winners turned a close game into a second half rout by not allowing any third quarter points. In other games, McHenry III defeated St. Gregory 31- 15 as nine players got into the scoring act. McHenry II nipped Johnsburg 24-23 as Dave Widhalm tallied eight points. All Stars from the division included Bill Cornstock of Johnsburg, Todd Trocki, Ken Schweder, Widhalm, and Tonyan of McHenry. Ranger Division (16 and under) Paced by the deadly shooting of Brad Christiansen, Johnsburg won all three of its games including a 49-43 decision over McHenry I in the title game to win the Ranger division. McHenry made a run at Johnsburg in the fourth quarter, but the winners sank I0-of-14 free throws in the final frame to insure the victory. Jim Leon paced the winners with 18 points, while Christiansen followed with 14 and Jeff Fowler added nine. McHenry's Mike Bauml lad all scorers with 19 points. Earlier, Johnsburg got 28 points from Christiansen and 13 from Fowler in a 65-29 win over St. Gregory. Johnsburg also won its tournament opener, a 41-29 decision over McHenry II as Christiansen again was the leading scorer with 20. Dave Toussaint led McHenry with 15 points. To advance to the championship game, McHenry I got past Moline 44-40 as Gary Freund and Bauml tallied 12 and nine points, respectively. All Stare from the division included Christiansen and Fowler of Johnsburg, Freund and Bauml of McHenry, and Jose Alarez of St. Gregory. Senior Division (20 and under) Johnsburg's senior division team won it's championship by also sweeping three opponents. In it's first game, John sburg got 16 points from Rick Neiss and 15 from Scott Spengel in a 70-50 decision against McHenry IH. Ed Kennedy paced the losers with 20 points including 8-of- 10 free throws. Johnsburg then got past Aurora 65-57 as Neiss again 16d the winners with 26 points and Jeff Bartmann added 20. In the championship game, Johnsburg edged McHenry II 41-39. Joe Meyers led the attack with 15 points, while Neiss followed with 12. Peter Huff led McHenry H with 14 points, while John Huff added 12. To get to the championship game, McHenry II also had to win two games. Scott Truckenbrod poured in 26 points including eight in the fourth quarter in a 46-45 win over St. Gregory, and he scored 15 in a 50-48 decision over McHenry I the following " week. John Costigan paced McHenry I with 14 points. All Stare from the division included Jay Huemann, Bartmann, and Neiss from Johnsburg, and Trucken brod and Freund from McHenry. Heavies Division It was an all McHenry final in the heavies division with McHenry ni defeating McHenry I 59-56 for the championship. Rick Peterson led the winners with 19 points and Tim Zeller added 13. Tom Les recorded the tour nament's highest point total with 32 in a losing cause. McHenry III opened tournament play by routing St. Gregory 100-44 as Peterson poured in 30 points, Zeller- added 19, and six other players also broke into the scoring column. Over 30 Division As only two teams were entered in the division, only one game was played to determine a champion. Johnsburg rallied in the second half to defeat McHenry 49-47 in the tour nament's final contest. Wayne Hiller led John sburg with 18 points, and teammates Dave Diedrich and John Dehn chipped in with nine each. Marty Conway had 16 points to top McHenry and Gary Snell followed with 11. With only two teams participating, no All Stars were chosen from the division. Johnsburg high school held its annual winter sports banquet last Wednesday and several athletes were recognized for outstanding achievement. * The annual event, emceed by Johnsburg Athletic Director Jim Meyers, recognized members of the boys and girls basketball teams, the wrestling teams, and members of the cheerleader and pom pon squads, and student statisticians. The wrestling teams were first introduced, the junior varsity under the guidance of Mike Roberts and the varsity under Don March. Junior standout led Mike Hurckes and senior star Joe Kalisek were the recipients of several post season awards. A126 pounder who became the first Skyhawk to advance to Sectionals, Hurckes was named the team's Most Valuable ^j-estler. He owned a season record of 22- 5. teammates. Voted captain for next year was Lars Swanson, while Joel Rowlan received the most improved award. Girls basketball followed, the junior varsity players being recognizd by coach a new varsity scoring record with 47 points in one game. She was also a unanimous first team AU-$HARK selection and shared the league's MVP award with Marian Central's Jackie Weber. - Johnsburg's basketball MVP's: Tom Pieper and Sue Dehn. The 138 pounder, Kalisek finished his career with a winning record, but missed District competition due to injury. He was given the graduating senior award, and was also voted the most dedicated award by his Kathy Bull, and the varsity by Sharal Koenigseder. Varsity awards went to Sue Dehn (MVP), Cheri Kofler (honorary captain), and Janice Schmitt (most improved). Dehn led the team in scoring and rebounding this season and also established Despite missing several games due to injury, Kofler was a second team All- SHARK selection and also placed high on several in dividual statistics including scoring (third), rebounding (second), and steals (second). Schmitt was an invaluable addition to the lineup with her all-around play and played perhaps her finest game in the Regional loss to Richmond. Boys basketball was the last athletic team to be rcognized. the freshmen under Mark Paztor, the sophomores under Dave Dombrowski, and the var sity under Ben Beck. Tom Pieper was the recipient of three varsity awards. A first team AU- SHARK selection, Pieper was voted his team's MVP, and best defensive player, and shared the captain award with Joe Meyers. Pieper led the Skyhawks in scoring and assists this season and always drew the toughest opponent on defense. Meyers was also given the top rebounder award as the 6-2 center pulled down 204 in 25 games, despite usually playing against taller centers. The final award went to senior Jeff Bartmann who was the team's top free throw shooter at 71 percent. He was also selected to the second team All-SHARK conference and finished second on the team in scoring behind Pieper.
