The book recommends that landscapers use coarse or fine textures and strong color materials "sparingly and dynamically." It also suggests that one way of planning a landscape is to think of outdoor space in terms of interior space, with "floors," "ceilings," and "walls." The "floor" may consist of lawns, carefully selected plants, gravel, concrete, stones, tiles and bricks. The "ceiling" may be careful ar rangement of trees, plastic and fiberglass shelters and even such things as canvas, wood and reeds. Hedges, shrubs, vines, screens, trellises and full or partial separations made of man-made materials such as wood, steel, iron and brick may go into the "walls." Once a landscaper has de cided on a plan, the hard and often physical work lies ahead. "All About Landscap ing" suggests 12 steps, start ing with cleaning the site to the bare soil, leaving only the Elants and features that will e included in the finished landscape. First step The first step may require the use of an efficient chemi cal to strip the area of un wanted weeds and grass, such as Oitho Kleenup, available in either ready-to-use or con centrate form. Such herbicides destroy the entire plant, roots and all, but don't affect the soil or later plantings. Directions should be followed carefully. N e x t , t h e l a n d s c a p e r should rough grade the area, making any major changes in the contours that the plan may demand. This may involve heavy labor and the land scaper may want to consider hiring outside help or renting special equipment, such as a tractor. The rest of the 12 steps are as follows: • Install a drain system. • Do masonry and wood construction. • Install "headers," the wood or masonry ed^es around lawns or planting beds. • Install sprinkler system, if planned, and any other un- dergound lines, such as gas or electric conduits. • Spread fertilizers and soil additions, and cultivate. • Level the area to the fi nal grade. • Plant one-gallon and larger plants. • Plant bedding plants, ground covers and lawns. • Clean up. Get rid of any remaining little piles of rock, lumber and so on. Hose down all the wood and concrete surfaces. • Aftercare. New plants will have to be cared for until their roots are well estab lished and they are part of the site, which may take about six weeks. Check the root- balls daily and water care fully. win i aiiura to waste it.
