Business-Leadership Winners MAKKITWIASKIT PRICES UP AND DOWN Marketbasket prices have had some ups and downs in recent months, but no dras tic changes. Look at 10 of the most commonly used: coffee, eggs, flour, ground beef, margarine, bread, milk, orange juice, sugar and pork chops. The cost for these 10 items, when name brands were purchased, was $14.11 in January 1982. In October 1981 it was $13.68, 43 cents less. But if we bought store brands when available, we spent $12.44 in January, compared with $12.65 in October. That's a drop of 21 cents. Sugar showed a definite 10 percent decrease. This survey may not match everyone's experien ce, and there are seasonal price changes. It does, how ever, give an overview of the changes we all note on weekly trips to the super market. MCHS Seniors Lorie Hansen, left, Mary Anne Lange, Lisa Poco and Lynn Weiss are shown with trophies won at the Illinois Office Education association state Business contests and Leadership conference. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD McHenry high school was well represented at the Illinois Office Education association state Business contests and Leadership conference. Area winners representing high schools throughout the entire state gathered at the convention site in Springfield from Thursday to Saturday, March 18 to 20. In all, over 1,200 students were in at tendance. Delegates had the op portunity to participate in general leadership sessions, hear banquet motivation speakers and attend mini sessions. Receiving honors from West campus were Lorie Hansen, second place in General Clerical I; Lynne Weiss, third place in B a n k i n g O p e r a t i o n s , Bookkeeping and Proof; and Mary Ann Lange, fifth place in Business Proofreading and Spelling; from East campus were Lisa Poco, fifth place in Ex temporaneous Verbal Communication, and Kathy Rasmus sen, seventh place in Data Processing. Mary Ann Lange received the top scholarship from the Illinois Office Education association to attend Robert Morris college this Fall. Lorie Hansen and Mary Ann Lange have been asked to represent the State of Illinois at the national contest in Nashville, Tenn. in April. Young Suicides Rise Although fewer Illinoisans in the 15-24 age group died in 1980 as compared with 1970, more of them died as a result of suicide; and the death rate among young whites from homicide, rose 142.6 percent during that decade. During the same time, the homicide death rate among young blacks dropped by 31.9 percent. "In spite of the increase in deaths from homicide and suicide, however, the overall death rate for persons in this age group declined from 127.0 per 100,000 in 1970, to 109.0 in 1960," said William L. Kempiners, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. The overall decline is due to a dramatic decrease in the rate of adolescent and young-adult deaths from accidents (other than motor- vehicle accidents), drug abuse and cancer. "The decline in the death rate among young Illinoisans is a reversal of the sharp rise in mortality among persons in the 15-24 age group which occurred between 1960 and 1970," K e m p i n e r s s a i d . "However", he added, "the adolescent and young-adult death rate in 1960, although lower than it was in 1970, is still higher than it was 20 years ago." (The 1900 death- rate for the 15-24 age group was 109 per 100,000. The 1960 rate was 99). The death-rate statistics were compiled by the state health department's Office of Health Planning.
