West Campus, and a record crowd was on hand to witness a historic first. Besides athletes and coaches of the Class A and Class AA boys teams that were honored, this banquet marked the first occasion that Class A and Class AA girls and coaches were recognized as well. McHenry H.S. Athletic Director Joe Schlender emceed the event which was sponsored by the nine county newspapers, including the McHenry Plaindealer Guest speaker for the evening was the highly acclaimed sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, George Langford, who addressed an audience of over 200 people. In 1971, Langford was given the Horseshoe Club award for being named the Baseball Writer of the Year in Chicago. Originally from Tennessee and a 1961 graduate of Vanderbilt University, Langford discussed his operation at the Tribune and answered questions from the audience about sports in Chicago (See Bullpen column) before assisting with the awards presen­ tations. Eight of the 47 athletes were local recipients. The coaches and the winners of either a first or second team laurel received plaques, while honorable mention selections were given cer­ tificates of commendation. On the Class AA boys team, McHenry's Mike Bauml was selected to the honorable mention squad. One of only four juniors to be selected to the Class AA team, Bauml was recently awarded the "Mr Basketball" trophy as McHenry's Most Valuable Player. The 6-0 forward led the team in scoring with a 10.7 average, free throw per­ centage at 75 percent (33 of 44 attempts), and assists with 47. Named to the first team of the Class AA boys team were Jeff Mitby and Jim Goodwin of Fox Valley conference champion Crystal Lake South, Jerry DeWane and Bill Firnbach of runner-up Woodstock, and Steve Hill of Crystal Lake Central. All five first team selections were seniors. The second team of the Class AA boys included Tom Dayton of Crystal Lake South, Todd Burns of Woodstock, Jim Teuber of Crystal Lake Central, Mike Lange of Jacobs, and Bob Dhaens of Cary-Grove. All five second team nominees were also seniors. Joining Bauml on the honorable mention squad were juniors Tom Dayton of Crystal Lake South and Jamie Ericksen of Wood­ stock, and senior Scott Beck of Crystal Lake Central Coaches recognized in boys Class AA included Ken Ludwig of McHenry, Jim Condill of Cary-Grove, Arnie Kay of Crystal Lake Central, Ken Slimko of Jacobs, Jack Renkens of Woodstock, and finally Gary Collins of Crystal Lake South. Collins was named the Class AA boys Coach of the Year for leading the Gators to a championship 14-0 record in the FVC and an overall record of 24-2. On the girls Class AA team, McHenry placed two athletes, juniors Karen Karpavicius and Terri Blume. An all-Fox Valley con­ ference selection and a three-year starter and let- terwinner, Karpavicius was named to the second team. The Warrior center started all 22 games and led the team in scoring with 246 points and in rebounding with 167 caroms. Her teammates also voted her most valuable. Blume was the second half of coach Pat Wirtz's one-two punch, and was the only player selected to the honorable mention squad. Known as a defensive stalwart as much as a scoring threat, she led the team in recoveries with 58 and pulled down 123 rebounds which placed her second behind Karpavicius. She was also McHenry's second-leading scorer with 189 points. Both players have been named co-captains for next season. Scherman easily led the league in scoring with nearly 300 points to propell the Gators to the conference championship, while Hustzi finished second in the league in scoring although not playing in as many games. Also from South on the first team was junior guard Deb Minoque, while seniors Tina Kwidzinski of Jacobs and Kim Boos of Cary-Grove rounded out the team. Joining Karpavicius on the second team were seniors Kim Adams of Woodstock, Beth Stanners of South, and Lynn Brockway of Cary- Grove, and junior Diane Pilgard of Central. Although finishing second in the league, Central defeated first place South in the McHenry Regional-final and advanced to Super- sectionals before being eliminated from further competition. This aided Tiger coach Linda Brady as the selection for the Class AA girls Coach of the Year. The first team of the Class A boys squad was also a senior dominated group. Area boys selected to the first team included Scott Truckenbrod and Mike Sabatka, both of Marian Central. Truckenbrod was the SHARK conference's last scoring champion as he finished with a 22.6 scoring average. The 6-2 guard had eight games in which he scored at least 90 points and\ had a career highcjf-JO against Belvidere. Sabatka was Marian coach Hans Rokus' point guard and team leader who topped the Hurricanes in both assists and steals. He is considered one of the best playmakers in the school's history. Joining the two Hurricanes on the first team of boys Class A were Dennis Hansen of SHARK champion Marengo, Paul Kramarczyk of Harvard, and Dave Otto of Richmond-Burton. Johnsburg placed two players on the second team in seniors Tom Pieper and Jeff Bartmann. v.. A second team All-County repeater from last year, Pieper quarterbacked Johnsburg from his small forward position. He started all 25 games for the Skyhawks and led the team with 359 points ,'and 48 assists. His teammates voted him most valuable, his coaches voted him as the top defensive player, and the conference coaches selected him unanimously as a first team All-SHARK performer. Bartmann successfully overcame a preseason operation to provide Johnsburg with a strong inside game from his for­ ward position. He followed Pieper in scoring with 278 points and led the team in both field goal and free throw ac­ curacy. Bartmann finished third on the team in rebounding with 130 caroms and was voted to the second team of the All-SHARK conference squad.
