If it isn't discrimination in the job market, then it's another form of discrimination, younger clerks and service employees who show, when they wait on us, that they think we are over the hill and don't matter. "I think we elders ought to do something apout it I am 75 and my wile is^O. We worked all our lives/getting enough to retirV Y/s paid taxes and Mipported charities and were law- abiding members of a community for more than 50 years. How can the elderly make their situation known to others? How can they demand and get more help and respect from the youngsters?"' -- Matt J. A. -- Matt and all the other elderly can do what Governor Bruce Babbitt of Arizona recommended to the Governor's Conference on Aging, "You must raise a little h-- if you want to change attitudes and modify laws." The idea is that we who are past 65 have to make our goals known to politicans, lawmakers, store owners, clerks and all the others in service work by being at least a little bit militant. When a clerk shows disinterest, or is out and out impolite, then the senior who feels insulted or slighted must complain to the store m S A L E WOOD BURNING Stove, brand new, never used. At that time the right medicine to ac company the complaint might be a return - to the . manager himself -- of merchandise purchased at the store in the past few days. Politicians are more difficult to put in their place, unless it is election time. Even then the politician might not know what hit him. He will know, however, if the senior citizen makes calls on him at home; rings his doorbell and says: "I am not going to vote for you because you have a heart as hard as steel.", or "I did not vote for you because you have no feeling for senior citizens. 15 percent ot your constituency." There is a special way to handle any complaint. Just use imagination and then put it to work; always being forceful and sensible in your approach to the person who needs to be scolded If enough seniors make enough polite noise and then raise enough h--, you can be sure the message will reach home. The point is, however, that none of the hell-raising does much good if it is not a continuing process. Q. -- The Mary Von B. who wrote you recently about how to find a nursing home that would be good for her didn't say in what state she and her mother live. I think you'd like to know that here in Oregon we have what is called 'Operation In dependence' which with public funds performs homemaking functions and does chores for elderly persons who would other wise have to be in nursing homes. "I'm on the Area Agency on Aging advisory council here in Astoria; and we are very proud of Project In dependence because it keeps senior citizens out of nur sing homes -- and at only one-tenth the cost. Seniors, of course, are much happier to stay in their own homes. "States that don't have such an arrangement would do well to emulate Oregon." -- Ed Dennv. A -Thank you, Mr. Denny. All who wish to know about the Oregon plan can write to the State Agency on Aging, 722 Commerical street SE, Salem, Or., 97310 Q. -- "In 1943 we moved from Bellflower, Calif., to Minnesota, where we far med for 20 years. We then moved back to Bellflower. We left a little money in oursavings account in a bank in Artesia, Calif. Do you think we could collect on the account9 In those 40 years there should be a nice little sum by now " -- Nick and Ida O. A -- Inactive accounts in banks come under special banking rules that can be explained by either the bank officers or by the state department of banking. Q -- "We read in every newspaper article and view on every TV news program something or other about economists. 1 know there are good ones and bad ones. W h a t d o y o u t h i n k o f economists'7" --- George McG. A - I have never un derstood the role of economists in our present eonomy Some say one thing and the others say the op posite It is very confusing. Napoleon Bonaparte had a strong feeling about economists in the first days of the 19th century. "Economists," he said, "are the blockheads who apply plasters (bandaids) to the running sores of the body politic." Allergic Shock People who suffer severe allergic reactions to wasp and bee stings may be prone to the same kind of shock from their first sting by an imported fire ant. GARDENERS LIVE LONGER Gardening can add good years to your life. Out in the garden you get exercise and fresh air, that much is obvious. What isn't so apparent is the relief you get from tension, fears and worries. Stresses fade away when you become absorbed in the familiar tasks of planting, preparing sotl, cultivating and harvesting. Look at your garden as a healing place, not just as a food factory. Look at the/rtVgh-tension people who escape to their gardens when ever possible: doctors, pilots, police, mothers of small children, teachers. You don't have to get into your car and drive for hours to find sanctuary; it's right outside your door. Spouses of tense peoph should encourage them to garden. No drug in the world is as safe or as effective for making a person mellow. Working out frustrations and resentment at the end of a hoe sure beats popping pills (or hitting ' the bottle).
