Freund, 2410 Services To Troubled Youth cMman *mPh Bipartisan legislation establishing a com prehensive program of community-based services to troubled youth has been introduced in the General Assembly. The service program, a continuation of Gov. James R. Thompson's efforts to consolidate youth services, will be administered by the state Department of Children and Family Ser vices through its Division of Youth and Community Services. According to DCFS Director Gregory L. Coler, centerpiece of the new program will be $2 million in grants to be awarded by DCFS in the next fiscal year to community agencies for local planning, development, and delivery of com prehensive services to youth. Coler said 18 part-year grants totaling $300,000 have already been allocated in the current fiscal year to agencies including Wood stock. Services to be provided or coordinated by the local agencies include community recreation and delinquency prevention services, 24-hour crisis intervention, coun seling, employment and training aid, emergency and short term foster care, and and legal vJ*ete* £ A J' There are many lures dangled before the family each Lord's Day. Primary goal of the community networks will be to provide services to status offenders: runaways, school truants, and youth whose behavior is not acceptable within the community. The legislation was a product of discussions by the b i p a r t i s a n I l l i n o i s Legislative Study Group on Children and Family Policy. It calls for establishment of regional youth planning committees in each of DCFS' eight regions. The com mittees would draft annual youth services plans and recommend agencies for funding. Outbreak Of Scarlet Fever In Illinois NOW IN LEE 6 RHY ELECTRIC 1005 N. FRONT (S. RTE. 31) 385-0882 According to William L. Kempiners, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, "The out break of scarlet fever among school children in Knox county has resulted in numerous inquiries about the disease, its symptoms and treatment for it. "Fortunately, scarlet fever is not as serious a disease as it was 40 or 50 years ago", he said, "but parents should obtain medical attention for any of their children who exhibit the symptoms of scarlet fever." The symptoms are: high fever, a red rash which may feel like sandpaper if rubbed with a finger, redness in the 010. P. Believes In Making Things Better. We're your Toro dealer. The rash most often occurs on the neck, chest, under the arms, inside the groin or inside the elbows. It usually does not appear on the face. Kempiners said that any child who has a fever and a rash, or a fever and sore throat, should be taken to a physician to determine whether the child has scarlet fever. "If scarlet fever is diagnosed," he said, "and the physician prescribes an oral antibiotic, it is im portant to keep the child on the medication for 10 days. Even if the child seems to be improving, he should con tinue taking the antibiotic for 10 days in order to help prevent future problems, such as rheumatic fever." If the antibiotic is given by injection, the 10-day treatment is not necessary, as most injections are long- lasting penicillin and will remain in the body for 10 days. , Kempiners pointed out that scarlet fever is tran smitted from person to person through the respiratory route (coughing, sneezing, etc.) and that a patient remains infectious to others for 24-28 hours after antibiotic treatment has been startbd.
