Freund, Wonder Illinois Revenue Director J. Thomas Johnson said Wednesday that statements charging the state with delaying income tax refund checks are erroneous. In fact, he said, more than half the persons who are to receive these * refunds already have them in their hands. "There is no backlog in refund processing as of today," Johnson stated. Johnson said that reports claiming these and Circuit Breaker payments are being delayed in order to aid the state's fiscal situation are untrue. "As of April 9 we have issued 1.5 million in dividual income tax refunds, almost identical to the number processed at the same time last year," he said. Circuit Breaker payments were off to a slow start earlier in the year, Johnson said, but checks are now being issued on a regular basis. He attributed the slow start to changes in the law which required new systems to be set up and a new tape- match program which confirms data submitted by applicants. "This new system is now in place and we are issuing checks on a regular basis," Johnson said. Johnson pointed out that a comparison of business income tax refunds issued this fiscal year shows the state to be well ahead of refunds in previous years. The state had issued $62.5 million in business refunds as of April 9, as compared to $40.2 million at that time in FY '81 and $35.8 million in FY '80. Transportation researchers warn many trucks transport dangerous chemicals and ex plosive materials that could cause catastrophic accidents if mishandled. EASTER SPENT IN FLORIDA Curly Skidmore ac companied her daughter's family, Jackie, Ron and Billy Creutz of McHenry, on a motor trip to Florida. They spent Easter week with Ron's Mother, Mrs. Eleanor Creutz, at Holiday, Fla. While there, they enjoyed beautiful weather all the time but unfortunately hit some hard rains both driving down and returning home. The folks visited with Mrs. Elaine Gray, formerly of McHenry, who lives in the Holiday area. They toured the sponge docks and tried their hand at fishing but got no fish - just some sunburn. TRAVELERS Iowa bound Saturday, in all that rain, was Doris Low, her mother Mabel Thomas, and sister Marge Fern- strom, both of McHenry. The trio went to Fort Doge, Iowa to see Mrs. Thomas' brother and sister-in-law. While there, they attended a wedding reception on Sunday for a cousin, and visited with a lot of the relatives. Doris also spent some time with Andy and Shirley Raemaker who live at Eagle Grove, Iowa, just north of Fort Doge. All are doing OK and send their best regards to all. The travelers returned Monday and again had lots of rain as they headed for home, but not the high winds that accompanied the rain on Saturday. GOD BLESS POETS CORNER THE EDGE OF FEAR What is this that walks beside me Almost out of sight, Flitting round a corner Keeping from the light. Is it my imagination Or is it really there? Shall I seek and try to find it, Am I brave enough to dare? Is it only just a shadow Or is it truly real? Is life just playing games with me, A thing I only feel? I'm at the brink of shadows On the very edge of fear, I really can't see anything But feel danger very near. I peer around on every side, The shadows seem to tease, Then I escape the feeling And set my heart at ease.
