Green street, McHenry.The csntsts. presented by the senior choir, leads viewers throngh the season of Lent to Palm Snnday, throngh Holy week and finally to Easter Sunday and Christ's resurrection. Pastor Roger W. From throughout Illinois they came, 377 high school young men and women eager to learn, anxious to improve and determined to become the leaders that their elders encourage. The two-day event in mid- April was the annual Illinois Farm Bureau-FFA Youth conference, built around the theme, "If Not You, Who?" Begun more than 20 years ago, the conference is aimed at encouraging young people to think about their career possibilities, to explain the opportunity and respon­ sibility that confronts them as leaders in their age group, and to urge them to come forward-to accept that responsibility and to gain the education and other skills necessary to bear that burden being thrust on them in an uneasy world. The conference had other goals, Glen Phillips, Illinois Farm Bureau youth program director, sum­ marized as he welcomed the students. Phillips listed these goals of the conference, presented in conjunction with statewide affiliated com­ panies of Farm Bureau: 1--Familiarize today's young leaders in high school with the services, philosophy and ' help available from Farm Bureau and its af­ filiated companies Many of these men and women are farming now, and will be mainstays in agriculture for decades to come 2--Encourage leadership development, combined with i n s p i r a t i o n a l a n d will epen the services with a sermonette and then immediately fdinning will he the choir's presentation. Bob Phelps, Winnebago farmer who is the vice- president of the state-wide Young Farmers committee, made a strong presentation on the work of that com­ mittee as he invited the FFA young men and women to become involved in their respective County Young Farmers committees. He outlined local projects to include such activities as citizenship, tractor safety, first aid and CPR training, commodity markets, policy deve lopment of fa rm pol ic ies , candida tes ' meetings, and educational materials for schools. He also listed state programs with which include the discussion meet where young people improve their speaking and discussion skills. Sue Palmore, director of consumer affairs for the American Farm Bureau, had one of the most in­ teresting sessions as she involved the young people in discussions on animal rights. She opened the eyes of some of the young farmers with her report on the ex­ tensive and aggressive ef­ forts of those who criticize fa rmers for " inhuman ways" they handle fa rm animals. Urging the FFA members to become informed and willing to get involved, she said the issue won't go away, and "if it becomes a national i ssue wi th leg is la t ion pushed, we will be losers." REACT A Winner In State Volunteer Week 'PLAINDEALER"> Governor James R. Thompson announced Friday that he has proclaimed the week of April 18-24 as Volunteer week in Illinois. "Volunteerism in this country is a deeply rooted tradition that goes back to the foundation of our nation. Dozens of groups across the state everyday show that spirit in their work to im­ prove their communities," Thompson said. One of those groups, REACT, International, is the 1982 ' winner of the President's Volunteer Action award, Thompson said. The Northbrook-based organization is a network erf more than 1,400 local volunteer teams that monitor citizens' band emergency frequencies 24 hours a day handling calls for help and other aid. It is well known in McHenry county. Since its founding 90 years ago, the 25,000 nationwide volunteers have handled more than 100,000 emergency messages and have provided aid in almost every major disaster in the United States. Besides react, 17 other i n d i v i d u a l s a n d organizations were given Presidential awards for their volunteer work. The winners were judged on their work in several categories, including public safety, arts and humanities, jobs, material resources and education. REACT also co-sponsors with the American Trucking association a program that provides more than l million cups of coffee to travelers on holiday weekends. The focus of the seminar will be on coping with, and living with, the stress that this can cause in a marriage and in a family. Led by social worker Linda Fornaciari, the seminar will be held at the Crystal Lake Public library, 126 Paddock in Crystal Lake. There is no charge. The league sees a special need for this type of program, especially from the woman's point of view.
