MEDIA MONITOR By STEVE K. WALZ Donna Mills ponders 'Knots Landing's' fate Two cast members of "Knots Landing" have expressed concern about the thrust of the series, which was spun off from "Dallas" in late 1979. John Pleshette, who plays Richard Avery on the show, recently wondered whether the show's story line contained enough "life and death" struggles. Now it's Donna Mills, who plays scheming busi nesswoman Abby Cunning ham, who's perplexed about the show's future direction. "The show works if there are intriguing power plays and love stories. These were the reasons my char acter was thrown in," says the petite, blond actress, who was added to the cast last year to boost the show's ratings Miss Mills says Lorimar, the show's producers, are not developing Abby as well as they should. "I think Lorimar is afraid to go all out and really make 'Knots Landing' hot. It needs more plot variety. It's boring to do several shows in a row on the same subject." Miss Mills criticizes "Knots Landing" creator David Jacobs for making the show more like "Family," the dignified show he developed for ABC in the mid-'70s. She'd prefer the show to be as tawdry as "Dallas," anoth er Jacobs creation Miss Mills also accuses Lorimar and CBS of not sufficiently publicizing the show. "Our show gets the least publicity of any CBS series It is like a stepchild," she claims. "Yet, there are loyal viewers out there who keep it alive " Although CBS is expect ed to renew "Knots I andmg." the network has remained mum about the Donna Mills s trd\/uc By Lillian Bono ##*******#• show's mediocre ratings. Miss Mills, who once starred opposite Larry Hagman (JR. on "Dallas") in a short-lived 1971 series, "The Good Life," is hoping that Lori mar will revive a story line in which J.R. gets involved with Abby Cunningham. Hagman made several guest appearances last year on "Knots Landing" to boost the ratings. "Larry has not changed a bit. I always liked him a lot. He has a tremendous amount of energy," Miss Mills says. Until she learns the fate of "Knots Landing," Miss Mills will be developing movie projects with her Bonaparte Production company, whose business manager is "House Calls" star Wayne Rogers.
