The Skyhawks scored the only run of the game in the top of the fifth as the Hornets committed a costly mental error. Senior Dan Williams singled to open the frame and advanced to second base On an error. Rob Piesert followed with a sacrifice bunt which the Harvard pitcher and the first baseman both went after. But with the Hornet second baseman holding Williams near the bag, no one was left covering first base and the ball was thrown into right field which allowed Williams to score from second with what proved to be the win­ ning run. On Thursday, Williams found himself on the mound for his second starting assignment of the year. Johnsburg scored the first run of the game in the bot­ tom of the second inning when sophomore Jim Bentz (brought up from the j.v.) lashed out a double and came around to score on an error. Marengo knotted the score in its next at bats before the Skyhawks retaliated with two more in their half of the third. Scott Zalke tripled in a run and later scored the other. West Campus on Sunday, April 18 to wit­ ness the more than 180 competitors that par­ ticipated in the annual U.S.T.A. (United States Tumbling Association) Beginner-Novice Regional championships hosted by the McHenry County Tum­ bieweeds. Sixteen teams from throughout the state com­ peted in the event. All the competitors participated in several meets throughtout the year and worked hard to perfect their skills in preparation for this final meet of the season. The 26 competing Tum­ bieweeds, under the direction of head coach Duane Sperry and assistant coaches Jennifer Cooley, John Lantvit, Vickie Bruce, and Melanie Smith, captured numerous trophies, f ribbons including a' ' place team trophy for beginner boys and a second place team trophy for beginner girls. Showing excellent in­ dividual talents in the beginner division and capturing first place in their age group were Jill Bourey and Steven Crook. Mike Cornett finished second in the beginner division, while Ingrid Kjaer and Keith Koerper were third, Karen DeWolfe and Marc McGowan were fourth, and Andrea Brady and Steve Nelson were fifth. Annie Truckenbrod and Cindy Marinangei were sixth, Mika Nelson was seventh, Sherri Simon was eighth, Lisa Dombroski was ninth, and Kendra Fehringer was tenth. Also competing in the beginner division were Cristine Roper, Jenny Samen, Stacey Doherty, and Danielle Diamond. Demonstrating their skills in the novice were Shane Sperry, first place; Melissa Stevens, fifth; and Laurie Triphamer, tenth. Also competing in the novice group were Rebecca Brady, Bobbie Goebel, Julie Golik, and Stacey Schmidt. The intermediate and advanced tumblers are looking forward to their upcoming Regionals on Sunday, May 2 in RockfonJ, sponsored by the Rockfoid Boys Club. Those Tun- bleweeds who place in the top 10 in their division and age groups will qualify tor Nationals to be held at a later date in Chicago. cHENRY -- Cary-Grove continued the woes for the McHenry high school girls' softball team as the Trojans s^ept a doubleheader from t|e Warriors Saturday by scores of 5-4 and 8-0. The losses were the third nd forth straight for cHenry, which had its fecord drop to 1-4 in the Fox Valley conference and 1-6 overall. | In the first game, Cary tallied single runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead before McHenry finally got a clutch hit. After leaving the bases full and not scoring in the first inning, the Warriors sent nine men to bat in the third inning and scored four times on five hits. Robin Geiger (4-for-4 with a pair of doubles) started the inning with a two-bagger and scored moments later on a hit by Sue Smith. Karen Karpavicius, Gina Jernberg, and Dawn Suchor followed with singles to give McHenry a 4-2 lead. But the Warriors only managed three more hits the rest of the game and failed to score a run. The Trojans, meanwhile, chipped away with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh frames off of losing pitcher Cissy Pinkstaff (1-4) to win. Smith, Karpavicius, and Suchor added two hits each for the Warriors. Smith started on the mound in the second game for McHenry and only managed to get one out before Pinkstaff was called in to relieve. By that time, the Trojans had five runs on five walks and were never headed. The Warriors managed only three hits in the contest, one each by Karpavicius, Jernberg, and Chris Keevil. McHenry will hope to snap its losing streak when it hosts Crown on Tuesday, before traveling to Dundee on Thursday, April 29. OPTICIRNS Marian Girls Win Again WOODSTOCK - The Marian Central girls' soft- ball team improved its season-opening win streak to four straight with a pair of victoriries last week. On Thursday, the Hurricanes downed cross- town rival Woodstock 7-6 and on Friday defeated SHARK conference foe Harvard 12-7 which also notched their second win in league play. Marian pitcher Joyce Kennebeck limited Wood­ stock to only six hits and three walks in the first contest, while striking out four to record the win. She also led the offensive attack for the Hurricanes with three base hits, while teammates Jackie. Weber, Sara Traver, and Beth Penza followed with two each. As a team, Marian belted 14 safeties. The , Hurricanes jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their first at bats, added single runs in the third and fourth innings, and relied on Kennebeck's fine pitching and some steady defense to hold off the Streaks. Against Harvard on Friday, Marian took ad­ vantage of nine Hornet miscues and erupted for a big seven-run sixth inning to gjve Kennebeck her fourth straight win of the season. The Hurricanes outhit the Hornets 8-6 with Weber being the only player wth a pair of hits. Adding single hits for Marian were Nancy Walsh, Betsy Bauman, Donna Remke, Janet Cor­ coran, Maggie Monson, and Kennebeck. Kennebeck was sharper on Friday as she issued no walks and struck out five in her seven innings of work. After traveling to Grant and Johnsburg on Monday and Tuesday, Marian will be idle until Friday, April 30 when it hosts Marengo in a 4:15 p.m. contest. 1301 RIVERSIDE DR. Hurckes allowed two runs on three hits in the third inning, but then settled down and allowed only one more hit the rest of tike game to (rick up his first win. His teammates supported him with two runs in the first, three in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth. Zalke, Peisert, Tom Pieper and Joe Meyers all had two hits to lead John­ sburg including an extra base blow, and Meyers led the team with three RBI's.
