Purple Martin Scouts Arrive The purple martin scouts have arrived and the main flocks are not far behind, reports members of Illinois Audubon society. The purple martin is a bird which, is the largest member of the swallow family, and arrives in the spring in this area from its migration, from Brazil with a voracious appetite. The martin, which is called "America's most wanted bird"; feeds ex clusively on insects and is a colony loving bird that may be attracted to yards with a minimum effort. To those people who are privileged to be "purple martin landlords", it is most important that sparrow and starling control be im plemented at this time. The house sparrow or "weaver finch" and the starling are not native birds to this country, they have no natural enemies, and are prolific breeders. These birds which were imported have been responsible for the decline in recent years of all cavity nesting birds such as the chicadee, tree swallow, bluebird and purple martin.
