APRIL ». 1*2 Three-Team Battle Expected In 12-Inch West Division Part two of our three part series will take an in depth lock at the Western division in men's 11-inch Softball which comprises six teams and will play basically on Wednesday nights: (Note - the starting lineix», as was the case with the East preview- last week, are solely this writer's viewpoint based upon past year performances). Perhaps the most powerful team in the West, the Jshasbarg Bssinessmea are expected to open with a starting lineup or. Jim Meyers (P), Tom Spasojevich (C), Don Benti (IB), Harry May (2B), John Meyers (SS), Myron Bentz (3B), and outfielders Wayne Hiller, Joel Wakitscn, Phil Oeffling, and Scott Ledster Other players include Mark Schultz, Brian DiBlasi, Eric Schiller, and Wayne "The OM Professor" Frantz With the third best batting average in the West last season. Johnsburg should improve with the key acquisitions of Myron and Don Bentz from the Fox Hole. The duo will add considerable experience and power to the lineup and give Johnsburg seven of the top 20 hitters in the West Last season with the Fox Hole. Don batted .604 (4th in the East) on 34 hits, and added six home runs and 29 RBIs, while Myron was not far behind at 560 on 28 hits and eight homers and 28 RBI's. Of the returning players, Spasojevich is the best in the West as he topped the loop in batting average (.667), home runs 8>, doubles <9J, RBI S '33), hits (30). and extra base hits (18>. Spas was also the starting catcher in the annual All Star game Also starting that game from Johnsburg were May, who had a banner 576 season, and Hiller who batted .564 and led the division in runs scored with 30 John Meyers had an off year in 1981 batting 482 after a 600 campaign the year before But John did bang out 27 hits which vas more than his 1980 total Jim Meyers and Oeffling should both be around the 475 to .500 mark, while Ledster has hit over 450 in each of his last two seasons Johnsburg. 11-5 a year ago 'tied for 2nd-, finished third in the West with hits 235 and runs <172i, but led the league in extra base hits with 79 and will strongly challenge that mark again The Rusty Nail Inn., will also contend for the Western crown as manager Kevin Bauer has assembled perhaps the top defensive team in the league The starting lineup got the Nail looks like: A1 Stilling or John Conneli P . Kevin Freund or Len Ackerman (C), Gary Schmitt IB). Ron Len tine (2Bi. Chuck Marke SS>, Rick Wakitsch 3B Dave Sundby <LF Doug Freund LC), Ray Theien RC,. and Larry jones (RF Utility players include Phil Credin. Steve Rohrer, and Bauer, the longest active manager in the loop Major pick ups for the Nail include Doug Freund < Old Bridge and Marke <King's Row). One of the auickest players in the league Freund will solidify the outfiela and add some sock to the lineup as he carded a 491 average last season v.hile lashing out 27 hits and scoring 29 runs. top6 in the division One of the better shortstops in the league. Marke will stabilize the infield and bring along a 569 average which led King's Row in 1981 Marke had 29 hits last season. 10 of which were doubles Other acquisitions include Lentme Rohrer. and Cornell all from the Old Bridge. Len tine, however, didn't play last season and ConneD was on the Nail two years ago, left, and has returned. ® Leading the hit parade for the Nail will be Wakitsch, an All Star who is coming off his best-ever season. He led the West in RBI's with 33 ana was second in home runs (7) and batting average (.612). Of his30 hits, 16 went for extra bases Others that figure to carry some of the offensive load include Ackerman who batted .561 and Kevin Freund who in his first year of 12-inch batted .561 with 27 hits, and belted six home runs with 20 RBI's. Schmitt, an All Star starter, also had lineup are players at roved its won-lost a good season at .468 The M ; Nail, 11-5 last year, will need solid performances from Sundby and Theien to make a run for the title. Doherty's was the surprise team in the league last year as it won all 16 regular season games, then bowed out quickly in the first round of the playoffs. Doherty's had seven of the top 20 batters in the West and as a team was first in batting (460), hits (244), and runs scored (192). The probable starting lineup for Doherty's includes: Irish DeCiccio (P), Jerry Brodm (C), Chris Cook or Jim Para way (IB), Jim Way man (2B), Matt Oik (SS), Jeff Meddings <3B , John DeCiccib <LF)V Mike Rogers (LC), Tom Roach (RC), and Randy Vauk (RF). The eleventh man is Tom DeCiccio. One of the best all-around players m the league, Rogers has also been one of the league's most consistent He batted .554 in 1981 on 35 hits after batting .556 on 36 hits hits a year earlier Other top returning players include Irish (.537, 29 hits. 25 runs scored, 22 RBI's) and Oik (.510, 25 hits, 5 homers 22 RBI s i All three players started in the Ail Star game last year Roach and Meddings both batted at the .500 mark last season, while Vauk was close at .489. Brodm supplies home run power and Way man and Para way hope to reach the 500 levels that they achieved two years ago. Cook, a first-year lyer. was one of the top hitters in the 16-inch industrial igue Huemann's, 5-11 in 1981. lost two of its top three hitters Guy Weber (.4671 and Joe Huemann (.452). Huemann was also an All Star starting outfielder Also gone is Tony Huemann who has moved to Florida General manager Pete Merkel are looking for some experience and may have found some in the lies of John Pitzen. Dan Stanowski, Bill Rudolph, and Gary Snell The starting lineup appears to be: Frank Cuda (P), Greg Vogler (C). Tom Cote (IB), Mike Wines (2B), Ken Bottari <SS-. Bud Smith 3B), and outfielders Merkel. Blenner, Mike Whitehead, and Rudolph or Stnowski. Huemann's. second to last in batting average last season (.340). should be upped this season if Merkel and Blenner can blend last season's veterans with the new acquisitions and rookies Smith is the top hitter with his .457 average being good enough to rank him 19th in the West Cuda. Merkel, Blenner Stanowski. and Pitzen hit in the high 400's two seasons ago. but all with the exception of Pitzen (out in 1981 due to injury > had sub par seasons with their respective balldub6. Stanowski has signed a contract based upon incentives and bonus clauses, while ex-Little John's pitcher Snell has indicated he wants to be traded to Huemann's and play on the West coast Two rookies that hope to break into the Joe Bauml and Bob Greve, two standout McHenry H.S. from two years ago. Jewel Park, 4-12 last season, has improved average over the past two seasons and head coach Leon Palatas would like nothing better than to add a few more wins tfim season. The starting lineup for Jewel Park looks like: Palatas (P), Neal Nessett (C), Bob Hawkinson (IB), Joe Schwarz C2B), Jim Schroeder (SS), Steve Schwarz (3B). Steve Sanders (LF), Jim Cook (LC), Craig Rodgers (RC), and Mike Dawson (RF). The eleventh man is Larry Lowrey. Nessett led the team in hitting last season at .464, while Palatas and Dawson were next at .400 each. But Palatas is caps Me of hitting ckse to .500 and the addition of dark, who tat .429 with 21 lots (11 for extra bases) and 22 RBI's in 1901, should give Jewel Park a push in the right direction. Lee 6 Mary's Lakeside Ian may be in the same boat that Jewel Park was in two years ago. a new team to McHenry's 12-inch league that has played together in other leagues, but has yet to prove itself The probable starting lineup for Lakeside Inn looks like: Ben Menella (P), Larry Schmidt (C). Steve Schmidt (IB), Tony DiBlasi <2B), Ride Bielski (SS), Joe Scamleuski (3B), Kurt Teuber (LF). Kevin Kruckenberg (LC), Doug Eshner (RC), and Jim Scamleuski (RF). A fifth outfielder is Paul Bazan while other roster players include Ron Taylor, Scott Cedergren, and Clark Bierman. Manager Jim Scamleuski cannot wait for the season to start be shows a fine positive attitude which should rub off on his relatively young ballchib. Mennella and Eshner are the only experienced league players both havii* played with Little John's last season. This concludes part two of the three part series. Next week: Our final wrap up.
