Hospice is a concept of care for people who are terminally ill. The two main goals of hospice care are to relieve pain and other symptoms associated with illness and to provide supportive care to the patient and family. Treatment is planned to keep the patient as free from pain as possible while remaining alert and lucid. The patient's emotional and spiritual needs are also a key part of the treatment plan. Family members are taught how to provide care and to cope with the illness and its effects. The family continues to receive help and support during the bereavement period as they adjust to the loss.
